Summary

The values I have learned in attending this program for the past 3 months are really insightful and critical in our journey to become better leaders in our own lives. Understanding and oneself as a pillar of the leadership program taught us the importance of reflection and understanding our authentic self. It guided us that leadership is not about imitation but finding the right balance of leadership style that will enable us to inspire and motivate action. The reading on J. Campbell, help us understand better that we are the heroes in our own lives. No one else can be that hero; all of us will be tested and created as unique leaders in our own life stories. Once we understood authentic leadership we went on to understand what type of leaders we are through the enneagram. This helped the class understand who they are, some like me got results similar to who I think I am but some did not. The activity pointed out that we need to sometimes take a further look into how we are so we have a real image of us. All these activities now lead to what shaped us and molded us as individuals this is where we then traced our family roots to understand that our traits may not all be created through experiences but may actually be a result of some leadership genes that runs in our blood. Then lastly to cap everything we created a video of our leadership journey life's passion and purpose so as to remind us of who we are, where we came from, and why do we exist as much as inspire people to join our call to arms.

As we end our leadership class I would like to thank my classmates for sharing their experiences with us without you this course would not have been as much fun and meaningful. Special thanks to Prof. Jorge for facilitating a good healthy learning environment for us all.

MM Leadership Reflection Paper 3 by Leader Richard Tan - My Passion

Passion, a word I used to hear but somehow took time to understand. I grew up as a man who always help and support other people. As young as the age of 6 I already started helping out in our business, either it is selling hardware products or acting as a cashier in our store. I helped out in anything my dad does it includes fixing everything in the house, electrical, plumbing and mechanical works in the family car. Like any other kid who is asked what do you want to be when you grow up, people asked me the same, and I would answer like any other kid I will answer that I like to be a pilot, astronaut and later on a lawyer.  This question haunted me when I grow up. I tell my dad I don't know what I want to become multiple times. I can't seem to craft my own dream. I said to myself I will connect myself to a dream of another person or say another company whose mission I can relate to and connect with. One day an opportunity came, I joined an organization, it is a BPO company but unlike any company, this company is wholly Filipino owned. They take pride in the value of malasakit. This word actually connected with me in multiple ways. Aside from being Filipino, it started something within myself that changed when I joined the organization.

MM Leadership Call To Arms MM Leader Richard Tan

Good morning everyone

What I will share today is what changed my life as a leader. These are a few statements I have learned from John D. Rockefeller which supports my vision of creating a poverty free Philippines and how each of us can contribute to bring this to reality.

It all starts with this statement

"I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "

Growing up as a leader in my own field I always wondered what my vision is. I tell my dad I am not sure what I wanted. I know where I am good at but I don't see it adding up, until I saw this and agree with his belief. I believe in the good of each and every person, and that I believe in creating opportunities. Leaders like us need, to create opportunities for men.  

Every day we see hundreds of Filipinos striving to earn what, minimum wage, money barely enough to feed their sons and daughters. This is not the Philippines I want to see before I die. I reread the statement and continue to reflect on the words this right does not mean entitlement but an opportunity for people to be free to pursue what they wanted. Unfortunately what we are encountering in the Philippines brain drain, Unemployment or even people working as OFW is not because people are lazy but opportunities are lacking. As I continue reading this passion started to burn within my heart.

"I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living. "

Wow, he captured it in a perfect statement. How then do I achieve the first statement, It is by creating those opportunities. In my world of business we are changing the lives of Filipinos. We are creating opportunities for good employment and decent salary that a family would be able to send their kids to college and pursue opportunities but as I write this paper is it just the business process outsourcing sector that should do this. The answer is HELL NO! We are leaders in our own respective fields. Let me say that again we are LEADERS it means we are given the power authority and the trust to make a change in things. Let's make products better, margins higher so that we will have the opportunity to provide a better life to our employees. Things may not be as big but every single person we could help counts. Let us take part in any way we can. We are the people Rizal said to be the future of this nation. Let's be it. I think am hearing these words going through your mind. How then do we help the uneducated, the poor? Solving poverty is not that easy. I would agree in part. Then we go on to the next.

"I believe that the rendering of useful service is the common duty of mankind and that only in the purifying fire of sacrifice is the dross of selfishness consumed and the greatness of the human soul set free."

Again, let's put what we can do to good use. Uneducated, then let's educate. Why can't we teach simple useful work to people? English to help people be call center agent, Typing to become medical transcriptionist, shoveling "para gumawa ng butas" just kidding Prof. Why can't we teach people who want something in life to become capable citizens. If we see ourselves as smart then teach. If we are skillful then we should train. Let's not put our talents to waste.

Now as I end this, we always hear things about how Philippines is, like it is third world poor or illiterate. I want this to stop. If China can be a strong country with a billion people we are just 100 million people. Only a small fraction we need to help and inspire. We are LEADERS, we are not born, made or placed here for no reason. We are not here to just listen, but instead we are here to make a change. I urge you to join me in my belief. I urge you to join me in my call. Let's do our own little things to teach, train, and make our country a country we can be proud of. This is how I am now and someday this is something I want all of us to say. I am a FILIPINO, I am PROUD to be one. Thank you.

MY GENOGRAM / Reflection 2 

 This is a nice experience creating my own genogram. My first realization is that the de Jesus last name ended with my mom's generation since both of them are girls and my aunt remained unmarried. Anyway to go on here is the story of my family and myself.

My grandfather is born in China. The youngest of 3 siblings. He never finished grade school and only finished up to Grade 2. That is the time when he went to the Philippines. During that time it was really really hard in China. It is a communist country and people are not allowed to make a profit for themselves. This is the reason why people from our proving (Ing Chun), a part of Xiamen are moving out of the country. He walked for 1 week without food and jumped on a ship as a stowaway to get to the Philippines.  Before the ship reaches the port they have to jump overboard and swim otherwise they will be caught by Philippine immigration, so just imagine the babuyan filled with sharks and at least half of the Chinese stowaways that will jump overboard will be eaten by the sharks and probably one fourth will die due to fatigue of swimming and hunger. Those are his friend and neighbors. When they reach the Philippines they will try to work for people for little or no pay just to eat. He found his way to the city of Manila where he luckily met fellow Chinese people. It was decreed back then that no foreigners can own a retail business that is why Chinese people would have to save up and do partnerships to have a business. My grandfather did a lot of different types of work to earn. He cleaned shoes, sold cigarettes up until he has capital to buy a roll of textile. He then started a trading/wholesaling business of textile which up until I was born was his business.

Life was not easy for him, during his lifetime his business got burned 3 times losing everything and he has to start from scratch afterwards. That is why he always taught us the value of integrity. With this he said suppliers would trust that you will be able to bounce back and will let you borrow supplies for your business. Also he values friendships and relationships. These are well taught lessons he gave me as a grow up.

There is a wealth of readings available to the MM Leaders:   CD copy of readings, and HBR pdf file.  and the text:   Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney - the textbook.  Just to make sure that some readings are read in depth and understood by everyone, this Lecturer requested Leader Jermits, the Class President to  have some Leaders assigned to read and report to the class.

Yesterday, we had the following special reports:

Before this, this Lecturer did a check on the extent and depth of readings by the Class Leaders by reviewing the basics of leadership: (class participation)   Much is still to be desired in terms of mastery of the subject matter.  Except for Leader Rachel

The text book has to be read well.   We can not just wing it.  Great leaders read.  And read we must too

Leadership is about telling and sharing stories of success, failures, and meaningful experiences. And such, two leaders shared their stories yesterday with the class

Two of the class Leaders were requested to speak impromptu on their Leadership Journey:  Leaders Mel Flores and Richard Tan.  Both are vice presidents in their respective companies.

Wow

Leader Mel worked abroad  and local in many entry level positions.  But her long years of experience in Singapore gave her confidence and the skills needed in her current job.  It appeared from this Lecturer that she started out with the goal to occupy superior and responsible position.

Leader Richard Tan too had global stint.  But was remarkable in the journey of Leader Richard was that he learned a lot by getting out of the box of his job description.  He was in financial services group, in gas and energy company - Chevron and finally in a BPO company.  They started in the BPO company with only 3 employees and now they are expanding.

It could be tough in the future if this becomes the norm for future leaders ie to have  cross cultural, cross border experience to be on top of the rapidly changing global economy
