Wazzup from John Clements

To the SSS BOP5/MM Leaders, compare with your Learnings/readings and experiences.:

This is an article by Tully Moss and Marge Friginal Sanchez.

The contributors are:    Grace Alcid, Mario Biscocho, Arus Metin, Kristine Brisenio, and Neil Binalla

Grace Alcid says that the trait must embrace the cultural influence of Spain, USA, and Malay.

Mario Biscocho is academic in approach and says that the Filipino leader must be authentic, has clear vision, firm resolve, , inspiration and common goal, fierce resolve, endurance and tenacity,  realistic tenacity.

Metin posits Level 5 Leadership (Good to Great)

Kristine Brisenio talks about good character, motivator, and inspiration

Neil Binalla discusses the common Filipino traits:  pakikisama, hiya (from IPC - Mary Hollsteiner stuff) ningas cogon that can be both bane and boon to Filipino leaders.  Those who practiced pakikisama to their constituents ended up in jail.  Those who also  practice tayo tayo  and utang na loob (paying back political defects)

We Student Leaders know better.   There is no single theory we can embrace about Filipino leadership? The various variants proves this? What do you think?

  1. Overall, leadership in the Philippines has a unique blend of being ethical, being religious, and being communal. All of which is relating to a situation in which you are doing something with other people. Each person has the same capacity for learning to act virtuously, but each person proceeds at their own pace through practice. Some Filipino leaders have particular emphasis on the importance of the family and social harmony but most are not really dedicated public servants. They approached it as business. What we can do? .. just hope - that they exist not only for profit’s sake, but to serve the Filipino people and their families. We will just have to trust Filipino leadership until ultimately, in the best way we can promote the Filipino values—to remember that we exist not only for ourselves, but to fulfill the needs of a larger community. The best way to promote these values is to demonstrate them ourselves, and to institutionalize them wherever we can.

  3. Leaders therefore must have character. Must be ethical. We want our leaders to always be on the right than on the left. (Remember the Disney LEFT JOKE?
