Decision Making

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Leaders must make decision.  However, we must make decisions that are made as a manager, and as a Leader. Peter Drucker, and we interchange this label.  We can also classify these as Technological Challenges  This is the easy part

Managers manage things, processes, information, # events,  the facts are clearer. We can also classify these as Technological Challenges  This is the easy part

Whereas, Leadership is about you, your people, your constituents, ethics, morality, legality, public and environment. social norms, culture.  We can also refer to this as  Adaptive Challenges.  This is more challenging, dangerous, and fraught with dilemnas, moral, legal and ethical.  For example, I was asked by Leader Cezar regarding corrupt govt officials.  I dared say, it is easy to say that they are corrupt.  But elected govt officials have to deal with daily parade of alm, and help seekers.  Damned if you do especially if you don't because your constituents will bad mouth you, or not elect you any more. So what if you do not help your townsfolk -  will your conscience not bother you if they die of hunger?  What if you do?  Where do you get the money?  How do you get the money  From Jueteng or contractors.   If you doing a Robin Hood strategy?  Will the govt officials, in helping the poor think he is corrupt?  Or he even thinks he is religious, because he helps the least of His brethren?  What do you think?

We are not defending people who corrupt who think they are not. That is where ethics and morality come, and the ability to transcend, ie spirituality in leadership

Tools for Leaders

I can not think of a very specific tool for a leader.   Most of the answer are to be searched by the Leader in a specific situation (Uniqueness principle by Hibino)  There is no one formula for the challenges. The Leader must observe and adopt to the situation and the leadership challenge.  Thus Lowney's pillar of leadership would seem to be the only clear guideline, ie of examen.  What have I done for the mission, what  am I doing for the mission, what will I do for the mission

But very relevant to this topic is the Critical and Analytical Thinking  the Harvardian technique which gives MBA grads an advantage for both managerial and leadership challenges.

Thank you Prof. for the wealth of resources that you are sharing with us. Yes, you are right po, we need to discern which tool is appropriate. When I was facilitating Problem Solving Process, I was taught to use Ishikawa or Fish Diagram or Why-Why and The Force Field Analysis. When I was making my discernment as to whether to hold on to my SMC job or pursue a mission in the church, I used a combination of the above, but the ultimate tool is the Discernment Rules by St. Ignatius of Loyola. In the corporate life, when I was investigating an irregularity, being an auditor, I was trained with Kepner Tregoe analysis. Everything turned out to be helpful. Thanks to God for all these persons He sent us. Their discoveries and studies made decision-making process easier.

Hi Prof! Decision Tree, Fishbone diagram, all of these tools remind me of my OPEMAN which are basically tools for managers. I agree with you Prof, for leaders, these tools do not suffice. Leaders should be able to make decisions by not merely using these tools. Critical thinking which is the endless questioning as well as ingenuity-being able to adapt to the situation, are more important than everything else. Equally essential is emotional Intelligence (EQ)to be able to cope with the challenges that leaders ought to face. God bless Prof and thank you for sharing!

  3. The challenge to leadership decision making is related to the case of Sec. Angelo Reyes who shot himself. He was a graduate of PMA and AIM and we are sure he was taught these management tools. But in a very difficult situation he shot himelf to death. Why? Would we do the same if we can no longer find the answer to the questions and problems we cant solve. Only your strength of character, your faith and your steadfastness to a purpose should enable you to survive a crisis. But first things first, do we have a mastery of these management tools and skills.?

  4. Gage here. I agree, Sir. This is why I believe that leadership needs significant exposure to situations and experiences. Leadership is not an end product, but a continuously evolving process/approach to problems. Mistakes are learned from, and we need to inject our own experiences into governing others.
