Today a handful of govt officials at Manila, led by Mayor Erap Estrada remembered the 152nd birthday of Gat Andres Bonifacio. Erap was quick to compare himself to Gat Andres who was ousted as Supremo of the Philippine Revolution. He too was removed by an impeachment proceeding as a duly elected President of the Philippines.
(Many students appreciate Andres Bonifacio today because without him, there would be no holiday. Ha6)

Historian Ambeth Ocampo on Andres Bonifacio
Ambeth wrote on Andres Bonifacio at Inquirer as hero for all Filipinos 11/29 and said that Bonifacio should be a hero for all Filipinos and not for the masses. He was not as poor as he was thought to be, nor walks barefoot as some stereotype him to be.
At Talkback with Tina Monzon Palma yesterday, he said:
1. That there was cheating in Tejeros convention, and there were instances of dagdag bawas, ballot stuffing early on where Aguinaldo was elected in absentia. That was shameful because we started the Republic with cheating; and that has been perpetuated;
2. We could not pinpoint the Magdalo faction as being responsible, because of only Aguinaldo was the only one coming from the Magdalo faction; the rest were from Magdiwang (the Bonifacio group)
3. That with regards to who is the national hero Bonifacio or Rizal, this comes as a result of having the sabong mentality: Rizal or Bonifacio, Bonifacio vs Aguinaldo etc. (Hegelian thesis anti thesis?) However, it is sad to note that the remains of Gat Andres has not been found, and therefore not given proper burial. He was reportedly boloed by those who were tasked to execute him

Rizal was the first to think of Philippines as a nation, not just a province. Philippines was territory of Spain. It could be a province later on but afterwards, there would be secession.
4. Rizal indeed has yet to be proclaimed as National Hero by a legislation.
5. That Filipinos, and it has been shown had the preponderence for shifting allegiance to the powerful and the more convenient (balimbing)
