The Call to Leadership

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

A teacher must show by example, how to do things he teaches.

I wrote this all ready on notes for final paper.

THE CALL FOR LEADERSHIP

The title of this course is call for Leadership.  Why is this  course called The Call for Leadership?

1   What is is the first call?.  Well, Ateneo, St Ignatius, the SJ want you to be a leader, no matter what your job is, whether you are  corporate boss, start up entrepreneur,  as a wife, a child, a husband, a vendor, constantly,  every day.  Leadership is not just for govt officials, for tycoons, for corporate honchos and vice president.  It is for every one.  What we do has leadership value.  We are lulled into believing  that if you do not have title, we are not a leader.  We practice leadership all the time unknowingly;  it may be bad or good leadership.  Our action affects others.  Whether we are alone, or has an army reporting to us at our beck and call, we are leaders. And thus, we have the second call...

 2.  The second call   To be self aware.  When  self aware , we evolve  into better leaders.  This course does not want you to be a copycat, a reproduction of a hero whose life has been rendered trite and irrelevant by history.  You too can become a hero, by being authentic, by looking at yourself in the mirror to find the real you..  Thus you are not just to be a corporate manager, or just Business Leader. You are a leader anywhere. To be a leader is to be you.

3.  The third  call -  I the course wants to clone other leaders, more leaders, as you strive to be a better leader. It is a duty.  It is a must.  The future leader could be your children, a relative, or a co worker..  We have to multiply ourselves as leaders. Leadership does not start and end with us;  we have to grow other leaders



4 And the the fourth call:


Ateneo, wants you to be at the forefront, at the area where your faith and leadership meet the world's deepest needs.  Unlike the Benedictine monks who hide behind the cloisters and monastaries, or OP who just want to focus on  teaching, SJ want you to join the problems of the world, and help eradicate this.  As is with the present Pope Francis who got into trouble by not minding what the tyrants in his home country was doing against its people.  Some Jesuits were even involved in the Theology of Liberation



Ateneo wants you to be where the action is, to be at the front lines of life and religion,  where the tire meets the road. Thus this point is mentioned in song for Mary "we stand on a hill, between the earth  the sky" What does it profit this class if we just get high grades, we have fun excitement and learning, if this learning is not applied to the world  If just outside the four walls of the schcool building - there is joblessness, poverty, inhuman working conditions, unfair labor practices, people dying needlessly, malnutrition, abuse of authority in governing bodies.   What is the value of that education?  In other Asian/Asean countries, higher education like MBA is seen as an honor to upgrade the standard of living of country men. And in this respect, may it be suggested that we see it that way too.

     Thus this Leadership class does not end in the last session or in this classroom.  It has to continue and prosper and bloom, through your ingenuity and heroism as individuals, or as a class  We can not bury our heads  (like ostrich) in the textbooks, or the blog site, or the team building activities.  We have to be more. (Magi)  We have to be ingenious.

     Thus this leadership can evolve three  ways

1. To donate to causes, or engage in charitable work (Corporate Social Responsibility)

2.   Be the best you can be heroic in your present job.  God puts your talent where there is the deepest need.  Thus by being good, or being the best, you influence others, you generate more employment, more cures, less pain for the diseased, more enlightened students better products, :  for food, for telecom, better services etc. (Profit maximization to pay more taxers and finance govt operations and support society and economy.   Nation building where you are now.)

 3.  To engage full time in ministries;   save the environment, breastfeeding, improving maternal health, fighting poverty, serving in  your church. (Social entrepreneurship)

Thus the above summarize the course, the calls for leadership.

The choice is yours.   We do not want to have students/graduates who in the pursuit of position of power  and wealth would be unmindful of present challenges.  While we make students aware of global warming, climate change, renewable and sustainable business,

Will you answer that call?  Are you now answering that call?

It has been great learning experience to be with your class.  It was .indeed a great honor and privilege to be your lecturer for this course.  And I hope I will be given such opportunity in the future again.?1
