MM Leadership Final Integrative Paper by Leader Justin Quilon

FINAL INTEGRATIVE PAPER
MM Leadership
Written by: Justin Quilon

I. INTRODUCTION

This Final Integrative Paper is very timely as I am already in my 30's and this made me think deeply what I want to do with my life.

Our leadership class happened so fast. There's a lot to process and think of. There is a lot to reflect on. There were insights coming from various sources the blog, readings, Prof. Jorge, fellow leaders, activities, and a whole lot more. If we were treasure hunters, Ateneo just gave us a huge treasure chest to start with. The value of each person's insight, story, reflection and opinion is priceless because you are not always placed in a room with different leaders from all sorts of industries to discuss leadership topics.

The AGSB MM Leader Course has thought me a lot about leadership. A topic which I thought I already knew a lot about. This paper will showcase what I have learned from the course and will also serve as my personal STRAMA paper.

At this point, I am very thankful to Prof Jorge and my classmates. It was a memorable and very impact full class filled will life lessons. Since, this is my first class I am glad I took it early because now I have friends whom I shared personal life stories with.

Let me start by sharing my learning agreement objectives which was achieved though out the course.
Learning Agreement Objectives:
1. To know myself further through reflections and activities

2. To get to know my peers and learn from them, their life stories and their personal experiences

3. To be mentored and guided by our professor in knowing more about leadership

4. To understand and learn how we could be leaders in helping our country since we are already in a situation, may it bring out the situational leader in us

5. To get a grade that I deserve based on my participation and my contribution to the class

Prof Jorge always emphasized the importance of being an AUTHENTIC LEADER.

Let me quote Prof Jorge when he told us that "Being a leader is not just in what you say, not just in what you do, but in who you are".

I love helping others, may this paper serve as a guide for others who will be taking the Leadership course or even others who want to learn more about leadership.

II. Lessons from Leadership Sessions, Books, Blog Articles, Reports and Class Activities.

May this section be my leadership cook book that I can go back to when I need leadership wisdom and insights. Here are some of the topics and concepts that we discussed during the course.

Let me start with the Activities that we had.

Leadership Debate (Leaders are BORN, MADE or SITUATIONAL)

We were divided into 3 groups and debate whether a leader is born, made or situational. This was very interesting because all were true. All groups where able to present their sides. I was very lucky to be in the group representing leaders are situational. Deep in my heart and based from experience I am a situational leader. It is when a leader becomes a leader because of the events that happened in his life that he needs to eventually emerge as a leader; while the leader that was "made" is due to the process that they have gone through to become the leader. The group who won was the group who represented that leaders are born. We are all leaders or potential to be leaders as soon as we were born.

Prof Jorge shared with us that the activities that we will be doing for this class will explain this concepts better. He also told us that all three are right. For leaders are born we can verify this through our enneagram and genogram. For leaders are made, we can verify this through our reflections and readings. For leaders are situational, we can verify this through our Defining moments which we will be doing in our Reflection number 1.

This activity was a great activity to start with as it opened our eyes to the concept that leaders are indeed BORN, MADE, and SITUATIONAL.

Bad Boss Plan a Crime

In this activity, the class was split into groups. Each group will plan a crime and present that crime in class. The groups presented the smuggling of jewels with a twist wherein the least expected person is the mastermind in the end, another group presented corruption in winning the bid for a project (I think this is really happening in real life), one (1) group presented putting up a cult to earn lots of followers and earn money from their followers. Our team presented a crime of murder of a CEO of a competitor company and the highlight was burning of his bones for a clean escape.

This was another fun activity. Thanks to Prof Jorge for this. What I learned from our group is this. One (1) of our team members is fast in thinking of a concept and quick to deliver what he promised. He (Leader Richard) was able to send us a PowerPoint presentation of the crime in just 30 minutes. That for me is something; he is a true leader of ACTION. We are blessed to have him in our Team. Another member of our team showed leadership by improving the quality of our presentation (Leader Erika). We are so lucky to have another leader who is great in acting and fun-filled which made a presentation alive (Leader Gab). My role was the narrator, though I am an introvert, I just did my best to make the most out of our presentation to make it lively and fun. I became the voice of our presentation. All in all it was fun and the leaders came to life with this activity.

MM Leader Reflection 3: My Passion by Leader Justin Joseph Quilon

LEADERSHIP
Reflection 3: Passion
Written by: Justin Joseph P. Quilon

My Mentor once asked me this question, "What will you do if you earn 20 million a month?" During that time, I wasn't able to give a concrete answer. Though the question may be simple at first, however when you think about it further it is a deep question. What you will do is not anymore about the money. It is more of what you truly love to do and give to the world even without pay. I believe that he is asking me this question. What am I passionate about?

I'm very thankful for this opportunity to reflect and share what I am passionate about. I've been so interested in Technology. I graduated BS Computer Engineering in Don Bosco Technical College. Though I graduated and worked in the Telecommunications industry and IT field, I still feel that there is something missing. I know that there is something that I am looking forward to and something different that excites me other than Technology and IT.

Let me share with you the things that I am passionate about. These are the things that I will do not because of the pay but because I am fulfilled when doing them.

Call to Arms Speech by MM Leader Justin Quilon

Hi Prof Jorge,

Good Day!

Sending you my Call to Arms speech.

LEADERSHIP
Call to Arms
Written by: Justin Joseph P. Quilon

Good evening Leaders
Good evening Prof Jorge

"When you discover your mission, you will feel its demand. It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire to get to work on it."

- W. Clement Stone

Now, why do think I shared that with you? "Wala lang"

Seriously, it is because I believe that each of us has a mission ingrained deep inside of us. While we are still alive we have a choice to join a mission. I hope that at the end of this short talk you will find it in your heart to participate or lead a mission.

Recently, we joined a prestigious office contest. They call it the Halloween Decor contest. For our team, it was not a contest. It was a mission. And our mission was to make children happy.

The mission was very memorable for us. It made us grow. Let me share with you why.

A mission has 3 pillars, not 4. 4 pillars pertain to heroic leadership. Let me explain to you the 3 pillars of a mission. By the way this is easy to remember because all the pillars begin with "S". Just like Prof Jorge's other class "SSS"

Okay, let's begin with the Three Pillars of a Mission.

1st Pillar - Service
Not just any kind of service, it should be joyful service. Even though we were dead tired decorating our area and all of us lack sleep, we still served our guests the best way we could. When the kids arrived we put in a smile and enjoyed serving them. We are not just complying but we are committing to serve happily.

2nd Pillar - Sacrifice
When you are sacrificing, there should be something valuable to you that is given and not just the left overs. When you sacrifice you should be able to feel the pain. We sacrificed our time, talent and treasure.
Time - We went home very late and did not file for Over time.
Talent - We gave our creative ideas, and used our skills in decorating the place to make sure that the kids will have fun
Treasure - Each of us shared money from our own pockets to buy the things that we need

3rd Pillar - Selfless love
It is always better to give than to receive. In our Halloween event, we gave everything. In fact when the kids left, they left with almost all our decorations. We gave them all. The only decorations left were the mushrooms made from Styrofoam.

After the Halloween event, we felt exhausted and yet we are all fulfilled and very happy that we had accomplished our mission. The experience was memorable for each member of the team. Our team did not win the Halloween decor contest this year. What we got was far better. We were able to capture the hearts of the children that visited our office. As a bonus, we were also able to bring back the child in each person in the office. We saw that while our department head was getting more cotton candy than the kids.

Let me share with you my last story. It's about my favorite teacher who was a missionary in Papua New Guinea
In Papua New Guinea, there was no electricity, no refrigerators, and there were even times that snakes enter their classroom while she was teaching.

So I asked her an obvious question, why not just come back to the Philippines
She told me this.
Seeing her students improve; be able to read and write makes her very happy and fulfilled.

It is in giving ourselves that we receive the most.

I believe that each one of us is already in a mission.
For my call to arms, let's implement the 3 pillars in our own life missions (service, sacrifice, selfless love) and always remember that during a mission we grow ourselves and our leadership. But most importantly, we reach out and help others.

John 20:21
So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you."

John 17:18
"As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world."

Thank you

Regards,
Justin Quilon

MM Leadership sharing Genogram by Leader Justin Joseph Quilon

Justin Joseph P. Quilon
GENOGRAM

I. Grandparents:

a. Carlos Piatos Parada (Grandfather / Mother's side) - Tailor / Carpenter / Painter / Store Owner
He was one of the top students in high school. He excelled in mathematics. His expertise in house construction manifested his math skills and sense of creativity. He was loved by friends and relatives for his kindness and generosity. My Lolo Carlos always spoiled me with toys since I am their eldest grandchild. I remembered my Lolo asking me what I want to eat. Unfortunately, during that time I was not in a good mood and I don't want to go to school so I told my Lolo "lechon". I know that it would be difficult to get me lechon in the morning but my Lolo was very creative he said, "Ok" and went to the refrigerator to get something. When he returned, he gave me a bottle of lechon sauce. I remembered him for his creativity and being solution oriented.

b. Lucia Silvano Parada (Grandmother / Mother's side) - Dressmaker / Store Owner
She was a consistent honor student in high school. She won in several scholastic competitions. She was a success dress maker. Being business minded, she opened a convenient store side by side her dress shop that also sold shoes and bags. She was well respected in the community and was sought for her advices. My Lola was very soft spoken but when I needed comfort I always go to my Lola in their house in San Juan. During my younger years, My Lola was my adviser when I was making a difficult decision or when I encounter failure in my life. She gave me comfort and words of wisdom to change my mountain of problem into a small marble that I can just flick off my fingers.

c. Virginia Tungala Quilon (Grandmonther / Father's side) - teacher / owner and landlady of agricultural and residential lands, Red Cross War Veteran
She is my father's adoptive parent. She remains signle to this day. She is the daughter of Mercedes (housewife) and Jose Quilon (Ship Captain of San Miguel). She is a retired Public School teacher and a Red Cross War Veteran. She is a member of various Catholic organizations. I remembered my Lola having a very strong faith in God. She is very prayerful and she became a role model to us. Being in the province and living a simple life, she showed us how to live healthy not only in body but also in spirit.

II. Parents:

a. Susan Parada Quilon (Mother) - Teacher / Principal / Private Tutor
She was a consistent honor student; High school Valedictorian and Magna Cum Laude with a BSEEd degree in PNU and recipient of scholastic awards in High School and College. She worked for 27 years in a prestigious exclusive school for girls in Ayala Alabang mainly as grade school principal. She is presently working as a private tutor. She is loves to blog and cook. I admire her for her courage. I got my passion for learning from my Mom. I am very proud of my Mom for giving her life for us and sacrificing a lot just to make sure that we have the best life. I am very thankful to God for giving us a selfless Mother.

b. Joselito Tungala Quilon (Father) - owner of agricultural and residential lands / Security Agent / Supervisor in a construction company
He is the adopted son of Virginia Quilon since birth. He owns residential and agricultural lands in La Union. He was once employed as Company basketball player during his younger days. He also worked in a security agency as well as Insurance Company. He presently works as a supervisor in a construction business. I remember my Dad always trying to make us laugh. He lightens up situations. He thought me very practical lessons in life. He might have to fight his own battles in life making him choose a more complicated path but I am still thankful to him because he gave us his good genes. He indirectly made us stronger as a family.

MM LEADERSHIP Reflection Paper 2 External and Internal Influences by Leader Justin Joseph P. Quilon

LEADERSHIP
Reflection Paper 2
Written by: Justin Joseph P. Quilon

1. External - What are family, environment school and work experience that shaped you today?
2. Internal - your values, strength, weakness, and how do they affect how you decide to act
3. How do they prepare you for future challenges?

Leadership is a journey. Every day is an opportunity to lead. When I took this subject I thought that I already knew a lot about leadership but as the weeks go by I discovered that I still have a lot to learn. The continuous reflections we do for this subject has helped me become more aware of the lessons that shaped me become a better leader and a better person. Our path towards becoming an authentic leader starts with self-awareness. Right now I am constantly reflecting and asking myself questions such as, am I going towards the right direction? What should I improve on? What should I focus on? In this reflection, I'll be doing my best to understand myself better though the external and internal factors that    has shaped me today.

External Factors (Family, Friends, School and Work Experiences)

FAMILY
Early in life, our family got tested when my dad left us. Though the world seemed to crumble for our family, I saw the determination of my Mom to survive and bravely face the world for us. My Mom always reminded me that Education is the only inheritance that she could give us so we better do our best to succeed and learn as much as we can. Back then, I honestly did not get it. While others were spending their time playing, I was studying making the most of what my Mom can give us. My mom did not only teach me about the value of education. She also taught me hardwork, determination, and courage. I put these character traits into practice in my own experience. Whether I am playing games or studying for an exam, or even when I was already working, I hold on to these principles to help me succeed.

MM Leadership Movie Synopsis, Joseph Campbell and My Life Story Analysis by Leader Justin Quilon

Hi Prof Jorge,

Good Day!

Here's my movie analysis and life story

I chose the movie "Big Fish" by Tim Burton. The first time I watched this movie I did not understand it that well and so I watched it again. The second time I watched it I enjoyed it. It became one of my favorite movies. The great thing about the movie is that each time I watch it; I learn something new and I can relate to it depending on my situation.

Movie Synopsis:
Edward Bloom, a charismatic teller of tall tales, is a source of frustration to his only child, William. At Will's wedding, Edward embarrasses him by telling the guests an impossible-sounding story about the day of Will's birth, involving a giant catfish that ate his wedding ring. Will believes that his father tells lies to get attention and confronts him angrily. They don't speak to each other for three years.

Will receives news that Edward is very ill with cancer, and that he might not have long to live. Will and his pregnant wife Josephine travel to Ashton, Alabama, Will's hometown. They have a reunion with Sandra K. Bloom, Edward's wife and Will's mother, who is bringing Edward home from the hospital to take care of him until he dies. Edward is weak and bedridden, but he and Will finally speak again. Will asks to know the truth about his father's life. Edward retells his version of his childhood....

JUSTIN: I'll focus on Edward Bloom's story since its one hell of a roller coaster ride. Enjoy!

The Ordinary World
At the start of the movie, young Edward Bloom plays with two of his friends and met a witch living in a swamp who has a glass eye which reveals the eventual death of anyone who looks into it. Edward sees how he will die, and decides that he can now take unreasonable risks because he knows they cannot kill him. Soon afterward, Edward begins to grow at an alarming rate and is hooked up to a machine in bed, as his muscles and bones cannot keep up with his "body's ambition." In an encyclopedia, young Edward reads that a goldfish will remain small if kept in a small bowl, but will grow bigger in a larger habitat. Because he is growing so fast, he concludes he is meant for bigger things.

Because Edward is taking a lot of risks and his ambition is really high, he became the towns, star athlete, entrepreneur and local hero. In short, he became great and well known in his town.

Archetype: Hero - Edward Bloom

JUSTIN: Just imagine if you are aware of how you will die, won't you be able to take some or even more risks in the activities that you do? If I were Edward Bloom I would be taking risks and be daring in the activities that I will participate in just like doing a bungy jump on top off Macau Tower.

The Call to Adventure
When a mysterious "monster" comes to town and eats livestock during the night, Edward, the local hero, volunteers to talk to it and get it to leave. Edward tracks down the culprit; a gloomy but goodhearted giant named Karl, and convinces him to move to a bigger city. Edward explains that Ashton is too small a town for men of Karl's size and Edward's ambition. The two left town and Edward is given the key to Ashton by the mayor.

Archetype: Herald - Edward's Ambition

Sharing MM Enneagram Results by LEADER JUSTIN QUILON

Hi Prof. Jorge,

Good Day! Here's my Enneagram results.

I am most likely a type 3.
Taking wings into account, you seem to be a 3w2.

Type 3 - 11.7 - Acheiver
Type 5 - 9.3 - Investigator
Type 1 - 9 - Reformer
Type 9 - 9 - Peacemaker
Type 2 - 8.7
Type 8 - 7.3
Type 4 - 1

Wing 3w2 - 16.1 - Achiever w Helper
Wing 2w3 - 14.6 - Helper w Achiever
Wing 9w1 - 13.5 - Peacemaker w Reformer
Wing 1w9 - 13.5
Wing 1w2 - 13.4
Wing 2w1 - 13.2
Wing 9w8 - 12.7
Wing 3w4 - 12.2
Wing 8w9 - 11.8
Wing 5w6 - 11
Wing 5w4 - 9.8
Wing 8w7 - 8.5
Wing 4w3 - 6.9

Wing 4w5 - 5.7
I am a type 3 and taking wings into account I am a Wing 3w2.
Type 3s are Achievers. Here are some descriptions about 3s that I feel characterize me:
Focused on the presentation of success, to attain validation

People of this personality type need to be validated in order to feel worthy; they pursue success and want to be admired. They are frequently hard working, competitive and are highly focused in the pursuit of their goals. They know how to present themselves, practical, and driven. They are good networkers who know how to rise through the ranks. But, while 3s do tend to succeed in whatever realm they focus their energies, they are often secretly afraid of being or becoming "losers."
Threes can sometimes find intimacy difficult. Their need to be validated for their image often hides a deep sense of shame about who they really are, a shame they unconsciously fear will be unmasked if another gets too close. Threes are often generous and likable, but are difficult to really know.

Reflection Paper 1 - Defining Moments by Leader Justin Quilon

Hi Prof. Jorge,

Good Day!

Here's my Reflection 1 - Defining Moments by Justin Quilon

What were your defining moments?  What incidents events taught you to be better/transformed you.

In Don Bosco, I learned the saying "Begin with the end in mind". At this point, I would like to thank Prof. Jorge for giving us an opportunity to take a step back and reflect on our life. Amidst our busy schedule, this is a chance to be reminded of the things we've gone through, the challenges we've conquered, and the life lessons we got. I'll be sharing stories of my life in different parts. I hope to be a blessing to anyone who will be reading this article.

First, I would like to introduce myself, I'm Justin Quilon. I was born in a simple family. Both my parents got married when they were still young. They did not come from rich families. My grandparents in my mother side were poor. They need to support their 4 kids by sawing clothes. They have only 1 sawing machine. I am the eldest in our family. I have 2 siblings. We started our life very simple.

Here are some of my defining moments:
