FROM HOMELESS TO HARVARD: THE LIZ MURRAY STORY SYNOPSIS

Liz Murray was born on September 23, 1980 to a poor and extremely dysfunctional family in Bronx, New York. Her mother was a desperate drug addict, schizophrenic, legally blind, and an alcoholic. Her father on the other hand was also a drug addict – a highly intelligent drug addict with a love for reading books.

Being legally blind, Liz's mother was a qualified recipient of a monthly welfare check. However, the money they receive was all spent on drugs and alcohol by their parents leaving Liz and her sister to starve. They often found themselves feeding off garbage cans, and to an extreme, resorted to eating ice cubes as, according to the, it was as a close a feeling to eating; splitting a tube of toothpaste – even eating a stick of ChapStick lip balm to soothe their hunger.

As a student, Liz was often the target of bullies as she always came in smelly, dirty, and itching from her lice-filled hair. Because of this, she barely went to class and only showed up during exam days. Despite rarely going to class, Liz still often got high grades, which she credits to her dad giving him books which he stole from bookstores. He instilled in her a love for reading, which eventually paid off.

Being the favorite target of bullies, Liz became overly self-conscious and an introvert until such time that she quit attending school altogether. At the age of 11, her mom was diagnosed with AIDS which she contracted from sharing needles throughout her drug addiction. By this time, her mom decided to live with Liz's godfather where her sister also currently stays. At age 13, Liz has the option to stay with her father in their old filthy apartment or in an assisted living shelter where she would be given proper care and education. Liz, hoping her parents would eventually get back together, stayed with his father. However, in order for her to be allowed to stay with her father, the social workers gave the condition that she would have to go to school, which she did not. One day, social workers took Liz away from her father and brought her to a shelter home for children. Her life in the shelter home was as horrible as her life outside with all the bullying and physical, emotional, and psychological violence other children brought upon other girls including her.

Eventually, the shelter decided to bring her back to live with her mother. Liz started junior high school  where she met Chris, who had similar problems at home. Together, they avoided school and hung out with other gang of shirkers.

Chris was sexually abused by her father so Liz told her she can stay with her. However, Liz's godfather found Chris hiding in her room and told her to get out, so she together with Liz packed their bags, dropped out of school, and ran away. At age 15, Liz Murray was homeless.

She and Chris spent nights sleeping on subway stations, trains, benches, parks, begging for food, and shoplifting. One day, news got to her that her mother had passed away. She was 16.

Brief Synopsis

 

The story dates back in the 18th century when America was still under the colony of Great Britain. Due to the grave abuses of the British forces, American colonies started waging a war to drive off their colonizers.

 

Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is a war veteran of the French and Indian war is a widower with seven children (five sons and two daughters) and lives in South Carolina. He manages his land with free servants and enjoys his time in carpentry. The French and Indian war has thought Benjamin the harsh reality of war that he is avoiding himself being dragged to vote that his hometown will join other colonies to fight against the British. He was eventually forced the rebellion when his second son was shot dead by the British forces when they accused him of harboring rebels.

 

The journey of Benjamin Martin continues from organizing and training militias to planning and engaging with the British. The British were finally beaten at the Seige of Yorktown in 1781 when they were finally driven out by the American regular and militia forces with the help of French Navy.

Movie Synopsis

 

The Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century's most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.

 

 

I.          The hero was introduced in the ordinary world

 

Margaret Roberts,  as a young woman worked for his family's grocery store. She looked up to his father and delighted to hear his political speeches. She had a poor relationship with her mother.

 

Margaret as a girl in Grantham experienced a 2^nd world war air-raid. The film also shows, Thatcher as an isolated person from other women her age. She had to bear the unkind remarks of her classmates.

 

Being an intelligent young lady, she has won a place at the University of Oxford.

 

Dennis Tatcher, a businessman, proposed to Margaret and promised to support her apparent political ambition. Margaret was vocal in informing Dennis Tatcher about the trade off she has to make for her political career. Her exact words were :

 

" I will never be one of those women Dennis, who stay silent and pretty in front of their husband. One life must matter Dennis. Doing the cooking, the cleaning and the children. One's life must mean more than that. I can't die washing up the tea cup, I mean it Dennis"

 

They were blessed with twins: Carol and Mark.

Rurouni Kenshin is a movie adaptation based on a trilogy of the anime Samurai X. I chose this movie since I have always loved its story. Rumors said that the story is based on Japan's  history during the Meiji Period.

1.    The Hero's Ordinary World

The Journey of our hero,  Kenshin Himura begins as he wanders arounds the city of Tokyo a decade after their victorious battle in Toba-Fushimi, where he left his sword and sworn that he will never kill again. This also explains, why our hero has been carrying his reversed blade sword "sakabato".  As he was roaming  around town he came across Kamiya Kaoro, the daughter of a late swordsman too, whose left to manage the dojo of her father. Kamiya kaoro attacked Kenshin believing he was the famed battousai killing cops around town.  

Then, our hero was introduced to the situation that the country was facing after hearing what kamiya kaoro told him; and saving Kaoro duno from Udo Jin-e's hand .

Movie Title:  Independence Day

Movie Synopsis:

The Movie is about aliens trying to invade earth. It begins with about a dozen massive spaceships positioning themselves over some of earth's major cities. Some people welcomed their arrival hoping to be the first to meet aliens. However, the aliens did not come in peace but rather to annihilate the earth on the fourth of July.

After being informed about the aliens, US President Thomas J. Whitmore ordered a large-scale evacuation of targeted cities. The vice president and several cabinet members were killed. One pilot was able to survive the attack in Los Angeles by luring an alien aircraft towards the Grand Canon where it crashed. He brought the injured alien to Area 51 with the help of several refugees travelling across the desert.

Inside Area 51, some scientists tried to autopsy the alien but were killed when the alien regained consciousness. The alien attempted to attack the president using psychic means. President Whitmore told his men that while he was attacked, he saw the plans of the aliens: to invade planets, destroy all life and harvest all natural resources.

_____________________________________________Few movies have had the capacity to capture the imagination in such a spellbinding and compelling way than the Star Wars series. The richness of the worlds and characters that George Lucas has spawned has captured generations of fans: the fans of the first trilogy are the fathers of the fans of the second trilogy. Books and games have added more detail to the past, present, and future events surrounding Star Wars. None of the characters have stood out more than Anakin Skywalker, the son of an obscure slave girl in the distant backwater planet of Tatooine. "Anni," as his friend have called him, who would eventually become Darth Vader, one of fiction's most enduring anti-heroes of all time. With the first series (episodes IV-VI), we come across him as a sinister villain out to thwart all that  is good, but when the prequels (episodes I-III) finally came out, we find him recasted as a tragic hero who has descended into evil.

Applying  Campbell's Hero's Journey for the entire series would be long and complex, although the entire story of Anakin's life does follow the stages identified by Campbell. In fact, if one closely observes the story pattern, you would see repetitive, sequential and overlapping cycles: the whole story follows the cycle, but so do the episodes. < most movie makers are observed to be following JCampbell patterns)

SYNOPSIS:

The story begins in the midst of a crisis: the planet of Naboo has been blockaded by the Trade Federation, and the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic dispatches Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to negotiate with the Federation. Unknown to them, the Trade Federation has been secretly advised by Darth Sidious, a Sith Lord, and the Jedi's greatest opponent, to kill the Jedi and invade Naboo. The Jedi flee to the planet even as the invasion commences, and saves a Gungan outcast, Jar-jar Binks. In their debt, Binks leads the pair to the underwater Gungan city, where Qui-Gon unsuccessfully tries to convince the Gungans to aid the humans. The Lady, a movie created in Year 2011 movie starring Michelle Yeoh and David Thelwis is my selected film for my paper. This movie is the love story of Burma's Peace Prize Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and husband Michael Aris. It is also the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma's democracy movement. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, their love endures until the very end. Like Joseph Palmer's "Hero with a thousand faces" who travels in 12 stages, Aung San Suu Kyi also had her own series of adventures.

Aung San Suu Kyi was born June 19, 1945 in Rangoon, Burma to General Aung San and Daw Khin. The general was one of the 'Thirty Comrades' who spearheaded the Japanese advance into British Burma, before turning against the Japanese and founded the modern Burmese army and negotiated Burma's independence from the British Empire in 1947; he was assassinated by his rivals in the same year.

Here is my Movie Synopsis and Life Journey in relation to Joseph Campbell's "A Hero Has A Thousand Faces" framework. Have a nice weekend.

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going inside their head? Inside Out is a story about Riley and her emotions and how they struggle to adjust a new life. After Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions try to control the situation too much which creates more confusion to Riley.  An attempt to restore Riley's normal being is under the heed of her emotions.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL'S THE STAGES OF THE HERO'S JOURNEY --- Inside Out

1.       Ordinary World

Inside Riley, there is a Headquarters, where the control center operated by her five emotions.

a.       Joy - The leader responsible for making Riley happy all the time and keep things positive whatever the circumstances are.

b.      Sadness - She makes Riley cry and feel sad, Joy questions what good exactly she does.

c.       Fear – He keeps Riley safe.

d.      Disgust – She keeps Riley being poisoned physically and socially.

e.      Anger – He make sure everything is fair for Riley.

Inside Riley's brain are the core memories that came from important events in her life, almost Joy.  Each core memories power a different aspect of her personalities. These personalities describe how she reacts to her environment, which makes Riley, Riley. These are Hockey Island, Goofball Island, Friendship Island, Honesty Island and Family Island.

2.       Call to Adventure

Riley's parents decided to move from Minessota to San Francisco, where her father has a new job and her mother supported it but felt sad. Riley didn't like what she saw at San Francisco and she was put under stress. Her new house and room stink, friends are in Minessota and all their stuff were in the missing van. With all this confusion, all the emotions except for Joy find there was absolutely nothing to be happy right now.

3.       Refusal of the Call

With the change of the environment, Sadness does self-loathing but Joy trying to keep her out of Riley's control. On Riley's first day on her new school, she told something about herself, about Minessota.  "Everything is different now", the change is tough, she cried. While Joy trying to keep Sadness away from the control and touching the core memories, they accidently ejected from the Headquarters with Riley's Core Memories, and get lost to Long Term Memory.

4.      Meeting the Mentor

With only Fear, Disgust and Anger left in the control centre, all personality islands turn down. Without Joy, they couldn't make Riley happy. In Long Term Memory, Joy and Sadness stumble upon Bing Bong, Riley's old imaginary friend. Bing Bong knows that Joy needs to be in the Headquarters to prevent Riley's personalities falling apart. He is willing to accompany her through Train of Thoughts.

5.       Crossing the Threshold

Riley can no longer manages her emotions; she only feels disgust, fear and anger. She became disrespectful to her parents. She was scolded by her father and when he tried to console her, she couldn't feel anything, and Goofball Island was destroyed. She talked to her friend in Minessota, her friend couldn't stop talking about the new girl on their team, Riley felt bad, and Friendship Island was destroyed. Her mother convinced her to try out a new hockey team, with her personality island being down, she couldn't play right, and Hockey Island was destroyed. Anger came to the idea that Riley needs to go back to San Francisco, because everything was perfect there, even this means running away for Disgust and Anger.

6.       Tests, Allies, Enemies

Joy tried her best to save Riley's falling apart; she needs to go back to the Headquarters as fast as she could. Bing Bong leads them to take the shortcut to train station to catch the Train of Thoughts. Sadness being familiar with the Long Term memory island, she warned Joy about the danger of this shortcut Abstract Thought, but she didn't listen. Soon after they are in, the Mind Workers arrive to analyze the concept of "loneliness" but they see that there seems to be something inside, they activate it to clean it up beforehand.  Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong are suddenly taken through the 4step extraction process. 1^st non –objective fragmentation, 2^nd deconstructing, 3^rd two–dimensional and before they reach the 4^th stage of nonfigurative, Sadness realized they could exploit their two-dimensional state to get out. Still they weren't able to reach the train.

 "MERLIN" – MOVIE REVIEW IN RELATION TO JOHN CAMPBELL'S "THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES"

I have always been fascinated by fictional movies showcasing magics and sorceries.  I am particularly captivated by the possibility of supernatural powers and how people would handle and employ them in the ordinary world with ordinary people.  Thus my all-time favorite movie and TV miniseries is "Merlin". 

MOVIE SUMMARY

The movie "Merlin" portraits the legend of King Arthur, from the perspective of the King's Wizard, Merlin.During the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain, the spread of Christianity has weakened the power of Queen Mab, goddess of the fey (fairies). Coupled with the destruction of both Christian and pagan holy sites due to the turmoil, Mab's world of magic faces imminent extinction. While her sister, the Lady of the Lake, accepts the inevitable, Mab vows to resist. She decides to create a wizard named Merlin, that she believes will bring people back to the "Old Ways" and save her and the kingdom.  In the turn of events, Merlin rejected her teachings setting up a war between them which leads to her attack on Arthur.  Merline faced many challenges but did not stop, even sacrificing the chance for a good life with his love one, Nimue, until he won over Queen Mab.

1)          THE HERO IS INTRODUCED IN HIS ORDINARY WORLD

"Merlin was born to Elissa who dies shortly after giving birth to Merlin, leaving the child to be raised by Ambrosia, an old woman who used to be a pagan.  Merlin grew as a normal boy with no knowledge of his true heritage." 

In our childhood days, we all live our lives like any other kid, not having knowledge and with little concern of what we are fully capable of based on our genetics or economic and social footings as we are when we grow older.

I was an ordinary kid, living an ordinary life in a rural town.  Like Merlin, we were raised by aged people, by our grandparents, as both our parents were working abroad.  We live in a barrio approximately three (3) kilometers away from the town proper.  Life seems simple.  We walk to and from school daily.  Financially, we were adequately provided though could not afford some luxuries like buying new clothes if there is no special or intended occasion.

Good Day!

Here's my movie analysis and life story 

I chose the movie "Big Fish" by Tim Burton. The first time I watched this movie I did not understand it that well and so I watched it again. The second time I watched it I enjoyed it. It became one of my favorite movies. The great thing about the movie is that each time I watch it; I learn something new and I can relate to it depending on my situation. 

Movie Synopsis:

Edward Bloom, a charismatic teller of tall tales, is a source of frustration to his only child, William. At Will's wedding, Edward embarrasses him by telling the guests an impossible-sounding story about the day of Will's birth, involving a giant catfish that ate his wedding ring. Will believes that his father tells lies to get attention and confronts him angrily. They don't speak to each other for three years.

Will receives news that Edward is very ill with cancer, and that he might not have long to live. Will and his pregnant wife Josephine travel to Ashton, Alabama, Will's hometown. They have a reunion with Sandra K. Bloom, Edward's wife and Will's mother, who is bringing Edward home from the hospital to take care of him until he dies. Edward is weak and bedridden, but he and Will finally speak again. Will asks to know the truth about his father's life. Edward retells his version of his childhood....

JUSTIN: I'll focus on Edward Bloom's story since its one hell of a roller coaster ride. Enjoy!

The Ordinary World

At the start of the movie, young Edward Bloom plays with two of his friends and met a witch living in a swamp who has a glass eye which reveals the eventual death of anyone who looks into it. Edward sees how he will die, and decides that he can now take unreasonable risks because he knows they cannot kill him. Soon afterward, Edward begins to grow at an alarming rate and is hooked up to a machine in bed, as his muscles and bones cannot keep up with his "body's ambition." In an encyclopedia, young Edward reads that a goldfish will remain small if kept in a small bowl, but will grow bigger in a larger habitat. Because he is growing so fast, he concludes he is meant for bigger things. 

Because Edward is taking a lot of risks and his ambition is really high, he became the towns, star athlete, entrepreneur and local hero. In short, he became great and well known in his town.

Archetype: Hero - Edward Bloom

JUSTIN: Just imagine if you are aware of how you will die, won't you be able to take some or even more risks in the activities that you do? If I were Edward Bloom I would be taking risks and be daring in the activities that I will participate in just like doing a bungy jump on top off Macau Tower. 

The Call to Adventure

When a mysterious "monster" comes to town and eats livestock during the night, Edward, the local hero, volunteers to talk to it and get it to leave. Edward tracks down the culprit; a gloomy but goodhearted giant named Karl, and convinces him to move to a bigger city. Edward explains that Ashton is too small a town for men of Karl's size and Edward's ambition. The two left town and Edward is given the key to Ashton by the mayor.

 The movie that I chose is Gladiator, a 2000 epic historical drama directed by Ridley Scott.   Gladiator was a box office success and won multiple awards at the Academy for Best Picture and Best Actor.  The hero in the movie travels through 12 stages, much like Joseph Palmer's book  "The Hero with a Thousand faces."

The Hero in the movie, Gladiator, is the Hispano-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius.  His ORDINARY WORLD is the battlefield where he led the Roman army to its decisive victory from the Germanic tribes. He is loved and admired for his virtues of morality, fortitude, courage, loyalty and most of all, for his devotion to his wife and son.  He earned the favor of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius and was appointed as his successor instead of the usual tradition of passing the crown to his son, Commodus, who was considered a failure in leading Rome.

Hero that "Never backs Down"

Master of two worlds: Himself and His circumstances

The movie " Never Back down" may not be a well known movie, most of the people I know has never even heard of it. But unlike any movies, this is where i can relate my life the most. From the hero's challenges, to his situation in the story, this movie reflects my life the closest. In the number of times that i've seen this movie, I found that there are a lot of the character's personality and experiences that we are alike, not only because I have a passion MMA myself, but because of the lessons this movie showed me that applies in my life, even up to this day. The lesson of choosing to never lose courage and always controlling the situation especially yourself. 

So, Here we go..Let's get it on!

Synopsis:

Hero: Jake Tyler (Sean Faris) is like any other teenage boy,athletically gifted but deeply troubled. What set him apart from most is the situation wherein his father died recently in a car accident and he was with him during that accident. But unlike his father, he survived the crash. What is sad also is that he could have prevented it by adamantly insisting that he drive home his father after drinking from a bar, but because he was unsure of himself, he let his dad drive them home drunk that led to the accident.

Hero introduced in his ordinary world:

On the 1st scene he is pitted in an ordinary world as he helps his high-school football team win an important game. A frustrated player from the opposing team makes taunts about Jake's father, who died while driving drunk. Infamously-hot-tempered Jake starts a brawl with the opposing player. 

Archetype: HERALD- event/group of people

Spectators capture the brawl with mobile phones and video-cameras. Soon, the brawl is uploaded to YouTube.

The call to adventure

Jake gets thrown off the team for brawling, but takes it in stride because he is leaving this school anyway. He and his younger brother Charlie (Wyatt Henry Smith) are moving with their widowed mom to Orlando, Florida where Charlie has received a tennis scholarship. The Tyler brothers are close despite Jake's penchant for fighting and getting into trouble, which greatly upsets their mom (Leslie Hope).

At his new school, Jake has a hard time fitting in. He catches the eye of Baja Miller (Amber Heard), a pretty classmate who flirts with him. Later, Jake notices fellow student Max Cooperman (Evan Peters) getting beaten up on campus. Jake rushes to Max's aid, only to discover that the "bullying" he disrupted was actually a street-kickboxing match. Everybody present, including Max, demands that the astonished Jake leave him be.

The Hero is reluctant at first

At school the next day, Max lets it be known that there are videos on the internet of Jake's football brawl, which has gained him a positive reputation on campus. Max invites Jake to come and learn mixed martial arts with his instructor, while Baja invites Jake to a party at her boyfriend Ryan McCarthy's mansion. Jake declines the former offer but accepts the latter.

When Jake refuses the challenge, letting Ryan know that Jake came to the party only because Baja invited him. Ryan kisses Baja in front of Jake to verify whose girlfriend she is. Jake realises that he's been set up, and attempts to leave - until Ryan makes taunts about the disgraceful death of Jake's father. An angry Jake accepts the challenge but is brutally defeated by Ryan. Baja appears disgusted with Ryan for continually beating on Jake, despite the fact that Jake was obviously down and out.A mismatched opponent.

I'm happy to be able to share with you and other people one of my favorite books/movies written by Nicholas Sparks— "A Walk To Remember".

Synopsis

A Walk to Remember is an exceptional movie. It is not just one of those typical chick flick movies about a girl changing a guy's life. There's more to it.

It follows the conventions of what a romantic movie should be, with lovers' quarrels, obstacles that need to be overcome and a happy ending, but what stands out to me about this movie is apart from the conventions it follows, it also has a heroes' journey in it. The hero journey has always been an interesting idea to me, and to see it in this movie, I believe it made it ten times better. 

Landon Carter is the one that experiences this whole hero journey in this movie. He's the one that fulfilled the steps of the hero journey. The twist here is that, even though he went through the hero's journey, he wasn't the hero—Jamie Sullivan was. He goes through the whole journey to show that Jamie Sullivan is essentially his hero.
