Movie Synopsis, Analysis of JCampbell's Monomyth and My Life Story

Synopsis of the Movie Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump movie was created in Year 1994 with starring Tom Hunks is my selected film for my paper. This follows the life events of a man who shares the name as the title of the film. Gump faces many tribulations throughout his life, but he never lets any of them interfere with his happiness. From wearing braces on his legs, to having a below average IQ and even being shot, Gump continues to believe that good things will happen and goes after his dreams. While several less than ideal things occur during Gump's life, he manages to turn each setback into something good for him, such as when he finally gets his braces off he discovers that he is capable of running faster than most other people. This skill allows Gump to not only escape his bullies while he is a child in Greenbow, but also to gain a football scholarship, save many soldiers' lives and become famous for his ability. While Gump eventually achieves the majority of the things he hoped to throughout the movie, it proved a much more difficult task to win the heart of his life-long friend Jenny Curran. The movie is centered on Forrest Gump and the incidences that occur during his life, but during each period in his lifetime he thinks back of Jenny and how important she is to him. Although the two characters grew up together and shared a very close friendship, as the movie progresses they grow apart. This upsets Gump who cares immensely for the girl who had a rough start in life, and it seems the two always end up back in each other's lives, often in extraordinary ways like meeting in the Reflection Pond in D.C. Even though Gump is the main character of the film, it similarly tells the story of Curran and the hardships she faces.

The Hero is introduced in his ordinary world
"Stupid is as stupid does" is what Forrest Gump hears throughout his less than picturesque childhood. Though not as smart as the people he meets along the way, Forrest is thrust into some scary, crazy and downright incredible situations, rubbing shoulders with some great historical figures and escaping many dangers on sheer dumb-luck. His giant heart and never fading love for his lifelong friend Jenny take him on a journey where he learns what his destiny is.

Cebu Regis Leaders, Reflection paper #2 External and Internal Factors that shaped me by Dr. Kerwin Mark Gubantes

Good day Professor Jorge, sending you my Reflection paper on the External and Internal factors that have shaped me.. I hope you will find it a worthwhile paper. See you tomorrow.

Cheers,
Kerk , MD.

CEBU REGIS LEADERSHIP
Reflection Paper # 2 External and Internal Factors
Leader Kerwin Mark L. Gubantes, MD.

I am a simple person with simple needs and desires however living in an increasingly complex and violent world has totally changed my perspective in life. As I try to examine different factors that have influenced and affected my life, I have come to realize that it is difficult to name everything in order of importance. Allow me to name a few Internal factors first before the external factors. First in the list is probably my inherent desire to help others. During my years in college, my active involvement in the Red Cross Youth organization has molded in me the value of compassion for others. I have witnessed firsthand how lives are affected by the ill-effects of typhoons, floods , volcanic eruptions and other calamities. organising some relief work for the people affected in various parts of Luzon in the early 1990's have given me a sense of purpose and direction in life. It made me realise that our lives are definitely intertwined with our environment. If we do not take care of our environment, then the massive forces of nature will be upon sand that is already happening today and with greater intensity than ever before. More and more people have been victims of calamities, both natural and man-made. There is suffering everywhere we look. If you recall the time when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the early 1990's, a lot of people were displaced, jobs were lost, the American bases closed shop and people's lives were transformed. I was part of a small group of young students dispatched by the University to do Community Organising in Bamban, Tarlac. We tried our best to gather the people together, get their cooperation to choose their leaders and started livelihood projects to help rebuild their lives. It was an experience that has really touched my heart and soul, being able to work and live with such wonderful and honest people. I could have never imagined that we were able to achieve such project in our younger years. When I came home from in 2007 after my training in Head and Neck surgery, that same love and compassion for people was again evident and put to the test. It was a very challenging year for the family, my Mother was diagnosed with a stage 3 Breast cancer and I was just starting my career. Every aspect of the Family dynamics were tested - emotionally, physically, financially and spiritually. I kept the faith and indeed the Good Lord saw us through the trial. It's been 8 years now since the

MM Leadership Reflection Paper 2 Internal and External Factors that Shaped Me by Leader Erika Manrique

External and Internal Factors that Shaped Me
1.   External -  what are family, environment school and work experience that shaped you today?
MY FAMILY

My childhood was spent in San Pedro, Laguna, a place where we are quite near Manila (near enough to go there every weekend to my grandparents) and far from it that the air quality was better and there were fewer vehicles on the roads. We still got to play every late afternoon (after our afternoon naps) with the other kids in our neighborhood without anyone getting run over by jeeps or trucks. My parents both had regular 8-5 jobs (most of the time, because there was a time when my father was unemployed) during my younger years, so we saw them only in the morning and evenings, and also on weekends.

My parents always kept us busy with school and extra-curricular activities. They enrolled us in ballet, music, and sports classes every summer. They did not indulge our every whim and made sure we also had chores to do in the house. Although we had help, they made sure we were doing things and not just asking our Nanang for what we needed. Actually, Nanang was even allowed to tell us what to do. This meant she bossed us around also to do the house chores with and without my parents around. This background is what I think keeps me grounded. We did not have a lot of money growing up and I could not get everything that I wanted. One time, I really wanted to get a Barbie doll from a shop and I kept staring at it the whole time. I remember, I did this purposely so my parents would buy it for me. They did not give in, and I walked away without a barbie doll. Maybe I was disappointed and sad at that time, but I realized when I was older why they did this.

My parents loved each other. I only experienced them fighting loudly once, and this was even behind closed doors. Their personalities complemented one another like they were really born for each other. My father is a bit magastos, while my mother is very good at managing finances. My father is a people person and trusts almost everyone, while my mother is the perpetual skeptic. Sometimes the would argue about these things, but they also know how to make up. My father is more aggressive, while my mother is passive and extremely patient so they make up for what the other lacks. Perhaps this is also why my standards in finding a life partner is quite high because I want what my parents have and I don't want to settle for anything else.

SCHOOL, FRIENDS, and OTHER ENVIRONMENTS

I was an average student with average grades during most of my elementary, high school, and college days. I was never the bookish and eager student. I was never a problem student either. Although during high school, I had a reputation of being too talkative sometimes. In highschool I was more active in school. I was part of the swimming team, wrote for the school paper, was a catechist, and student guidance counselor. I had a teacher in high school who made a big impression on me because aside from her being really smart, she was very witty and had a different air of authority. She was the kind of teacher who didn't need to be angry for you to respect her. She was always smiling but you knew from the start that you would not want to see her displeased. She always encouraged me and made me feel that I could do better in school, and this gave me even more confidence.

Being part of the swimming team was also a big thing for me because it taught me discipline and the value of teamwork. My teammates and I were like brothers and sisters and I really enjoyed training because of them and our coaches. The parents also got along well with each other and looked out for each other's children. Whenever my parents were away, one of the parents would always look after us. During summers, I also taught swimming to little kids as part of our team's swimming clinic. This gave me a taste of how it was to have a job and being responsible for it because I was one of the oldest in our group. I was assigned to coordinating and most of the administrative work. Swimming also exposed me to different kinds of people. There were the rich Chinese kids from Manila and the poor but very talented kids from Pakil, Laguna. This taught me how to interact and how to adapt to different kinds of people. I would also say that I developed my self-esteem by being active in school and sports. I knew I had a lot to offer for the world and I was very optimistic and ambitious.

College was a bit different for me because this was in Manila. Coming from the a conservative family and a provincial school, I was first shocked that almost everyone in UST (at least, in my college) were smoking. This might have been a normal thing, but it wasn't in my elementary school and high school. College went by quite fast, and I continued being an average student with maybe above average grades. After graduating, I joined my parents at the family business. I was overwhelmed with so much work because we were a small company but was growing quite fast, and we didn't really have the proper infrastructure or manpower yet at the time. I got burned out after 2 years, and after that buyer told my father that he should fire me, I decided it was time to go. I didn't really think it would be the end of my stint with the business, because I also saw the importance of why it was there and the potential it had. I thought that it was time for me to have a different perspective and also to know what its like out there. I chose to work for Dell Philippines because they had just set up here in the country, and I knew working for a multinational like Dell will broaden my horizons.

The best things I got from Dell was developing my patience, realizing my thirst for knowledge, and the great friends that I met. Working in technical support tested my resolve because I knew nothing about it. I had to study more than anyone else (because most of the new hires already had backgrounds in tech support), and adapt more to these americans who were our customers. Working in sales in my parent's business helped me, but it did not prepare me for the work at Dell. I was used to talking to professional people who have also worked in the industry for some time and I had my father to guide me. At Dell, I was talking to housewives, angry customers, and sometimes very old people. I was also challenged and at the same time was amazed of the new things I was learning about computers and technology.

2.   Internal  -  your values, strength, weakness and how do they affect on how you decide to act.

Being detail-oriented has been one of my values even when I was younger. Some people say I can be a bit obsessive sometimes, looking at the things that sometimes do not have much bearing anymore. Like in my job as marketing manager, whenever there are policies that need to be changed, I tend to look at every little detail to the point that it causes delays. Sometimes, I have to understand that in order to get things done, I must sacrifice going into the details so we can get the changes started.

I have also always been curious to learn new things. Whenever I feel that I am not learning anything new anymore, I turn to new knowledge or skills to get my blood pumping again. When I was in school, I always had extra-curricular activities like swimming and badminton. When I was at Dell, I enrolled myself in certificate classes and lessons in microsoft excel in order to add to my skill-set. I also tried German language classes, surfing, and longboarding. Learning new things makes me feel alive and connects me to different people who I also learn a lot from. I guess this is also why I have no problem adapting to new things and different situations.

Some of my weaknesses are about time management and not being able to set correct priorities in my life. I am also quite emotional and tend to doubt myself sometimes. I understand that these weaknesses can be overcome as soon as I have the correct mindset and consciously strive to work past them. It is not easy, but I know I can get there. I just need to want it hard enough, and to persevere against them. Perhaps always reminding myself of these weaknesses will also help me because when I realize that I am again falling into those traps, I can correct my behavior.

Although my decisions have not been always based on my values, strengths, and weaknesses, they do play a major role. In my choice of a career, my being curious has also helped me decide to stay on with the family business. It has opened me to opportunities that I may not have had if I chose a different career path. It has also given me time to pursue my studies which I have always wanted. Managing a business with lots of challenges has made me resourceful, flexible, and diligent. I have also seen the impact that the livelihood we helped create has had on our employees. I understand now the joy that my father always described to us, of knowing that they were able to send their children to college and now have very good jobs of their own. Their parents may not have had those opportunities with us because we are a small company, but now their children do. It gives you a sense of pride that you were able to help these people. This, I think, is what will drive me towards my future. I would like to be somewhere, or part of something that has an impact on the bigger picture, and not just focusing on myself.

MM Leadership Reflection Paper 2 - External and Internal Factors That Shaped Me by Leader May Roxas

Dear Prof Jorge,

This is my Reflection Paper 2. My apologies for the late submission.

Regards,
May

What are the family, environment, school and work experiences that shaped me today?
Family
I have often thought of my family as simple and ordinary. But I believe that they had the greatest influence in my life. We are just four in the household - my father, the breadwinner, my mother, the housewife and a sister who is five years my junior. My father is strict and traditional while my mother is kind, sensitive and understanding. Because there is only one person working, life was not that easy. We managed to get by daily but we always had a lot of bills and debts to pay. However, this did not stop my parents from providing my sister and I all they can give, especially in terms of education. We may be short with material things, but there was no lack of love or concern. Although we were not rich, I lived a sheltered life. Because of this, I have grown to be very close to them such that up to this time, I consider them in every decision in my life.

Environment, School
Since pre-elementary, I have studied in a non-sectarian co-ed private school, except when I moved in to college. I was very timid and shy during elementary. I barely talked unless spoken to. I was a good student, a regular part of the class' top 10 list. During high school, I realized that good grades were not all there was. I started making a lot of friends and still managed to graduate 3rd best in my batch.
As he was only able to finish a vocational course, it was really my father's dream for me to get into UP. As for me, I only wanted my name to be written in the school's streamer congratulating those students who made it to the top 3 colleges in the country. During the filing application for UPCAT, he wanted me to put UPLB as the campus of choice because of two reasons - #1 we reside in Laguna and #2 being the protective father he was, he thought that studying in Manila is dangerous and will corrupt my mind. Unbeknownst to him, I wrote down UP Diliman in the application form and submitted it. When he found out, he got mad and told me to take the exam in Quezon City all by myself.
Studying in UP was one of those experiences that shaped my life greatly. I may not be the typical UP student who joins rallies and is not afraid to speak up, but UP changed my personality by letting me experience independence and responsibility.
Ten years later, I decided to take up MBA. Apart from advancing my career, it has always been my personality to look for ways to improve myself and to do something different. Since I have now moved from a technical to management role, I would like to ensure that I have the tools to make myself successful.

Reflection Paper 3 by Leader Oliver Pabillon

Reflection Paper 3 by Leader Oliver Pabillon

What can a Certified Public Accountant offer to the country, to the society? Compared to Doctors who help in the treatment of sick patients, Engineers who design and build structures or machinery, Entrepreneurs and Businessmen selling and providing goods and services to consumers, and Teachers who educate, what can a CPA like me do aside from counting numbers? What is passionate about being an Accountant? When the lecturer required us to make a reflection paper about leadership passion, I was a bit bothered about how this passion should reflect in my leadership as being an Accountant. Of course there is no doubt that apart of my being an Accountant, I am a father of two growing kids and a loving husband to a beautiful wife, where my passion about my taking care of my family lies. I will do just everything to keep them safe and provide all their needs (as any father passionately does). I will not talk much about my passion being a father since it is natural to every father out there. But aside from that, as an Accountant and a Leader, how will the passion reflect on my leadership and personality? I must admit it was only through this Leadership course that I learn about my passion as an Accountant and it is ironic that I am actually already doing it, I was just not aware about it.

Reflection Paper 3 - My Passion by Leader Michael Manauis

Passion came from the latin word 'passio" means  Suffering or Submission.

That is why we call the" Passion of the Christ" because it depicts Christ suffering and submission to the will of his Father. But that suffering or submission is for his people. For his immeasurable love for his people.

Maybe this is a reason why the word Passion is now defined by Webster as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something. Passion is also defined as any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, such as love.

Thus to me passion is submitting yourself in doing what you really love despite of any suffering that you are and will take.

When was the last time you made a great meal? From-scratch prep, serious gratification result. This morning? Last week? Last month?

Submission of Genogram

Gage A. Rush                                              August 12, 2015

                           My Genogram

Grandparents' Generation

Father's Side:
1.     Lloyd Rush – My grandfather on my father's side was a hardworking man of simple means. He was an excellent cook and a dependable person.

2.     Audie Rush – My biological grandmother died when my father was still young, and thus we barely knew much about her. I and my sister inherited our big boned builds from her Germanic ancestry.

Mother's Side:
1.     Jose Ostonal – My lolo was a teacher, and struggled to provide for over a dozen children. He had a great mind and an affinity for math and art.

2.     Maria Loretto Ostonal – My lola was the one responsible for taking care of the children and keeping the house. My grandmother wanted to instill a sense of discipline within them at a young age. She also wanted to make sure that all her children received proper education.

Parents' Generation

Father's Side:
1.     Kenneth L. Rush –My father lost his mother at a young age. His stepmother never got along well with him, which forced him to leave home and join the military. He served as a frontline engineer and was changed by his experience. My father had problems but he had great reserves of talent and drive whenever he felt like mustering it.

My father did not have any full-blooded siblings.

Mother's Side:
1.     Miriam O. Rush – My mother was the 5th of 11 children. She worked for various offices before settling down with my father and starting a family. She started and runs the Mister Frosty and Ikabud restaurant chains. Her experience in restaurant management is entirely through experience and hard work.

2.     Sherry O. Marcaida – The eldest amongst my aunts and uncles, my auntie Sherry first worked in Cebu by starting a taxi business, the later worked at Disneyland.

3.     Joan O. Obiacoro – My auntie Joan worked for a while in Dubai as a personnel manager for a company before settling down with my uncle Rudy.

4.     Joel Ostonal – My uncle Joel inherited my lolo's keen mind and mathematical aptitude. He used to work as a teacher at Ateneo before later working for N.E.D.A., and is now currently retired.

5.     Jocelyn O. Orig – My auntie Josie worked as a flight attendant and then later an office in Cebu. She is married to my uncle Bobby.

6.     Glenna O. Harvey – My auntie Glenna moved to the United States and married my uncle George. She works at a department store to keep busy and not be idle.

7.     Eden O. Weber – My auntie Eden also moved to the United States and married my uncle Steve.

8.     Vicky O. Smith – My auntie Vicky is another of my aunts that moved to the United States, where she married my uncle Kevin. She works as a primary school teacher.

9.     Leilani Ostonal – My auntie Lani also moved to the United States, and was for a time married to my uncle Dennis. She works as a chemist at Pfizer.

10.                         Harlan M. Ostonal – My uncle Harlan was learning to be an engineer, but did not pursue his education further. He maintains the family's ancestral domain in Bicol.

11.                         Marjorie O. De Guzman – My auntie Marge graduated from A.U.F. and became a doctor. She eventually decided to take up a nursing job overseas, and is married to my uncle Raffy.

MySiblings

1.     Keane L. Rush – My brother graduated from A.P.C. with a degree in multimedia arts, but showed a very strong passion for cooking. He is the founder of the Champas Mexican Restaurant.

2.     Jade A. Rush – My sister currently works as the General Operations Manager for Ikabud/Mister Frosty. She is planning to pursue a degree in Business Administration at HAU.

Conclusion
I can see a few traits that may have been passed on down the line, but in many cases the ones who succeeded the best out of my family were those that had to try harder even in areas that were not a natural part of their talent.

This is why I believe even though a few elements can change things in or against your favor, most leaders are shaped by their experiences in life, and this in turn makes them what they are.

I am fortunate to have a family like mine, as they have proven to be an inspiration and a source of experiences. They are the force that shaped me, and tried their best to instill some drive and purpose into my life.
