Regis Cebu Leadership Final Integrative Paper – by Leader Juvelon Abante

Introduction:

I was asked during the first day of the leadership class on what kind of leader I want to be. I answered I want to be a transformational leader just like Steve Jobs. This is my immediate answer because I have read so many articles about Steve Jobs and I told myself that I want to follow his leadership style. But these made me change my perspective on leadership for the past 8 weeks that  I am taking this class. I realize that I should stop being Steve Jobs and be just Myself.  I should focus on my strengths and work on my weaknesses just as Self awareness is the first key to discovering my journey to servant leadership. The Four Key Leadership Principle for this subject is about self awareness, ingenuity, heroism and love. These are the most essential traits that every leader should possessed and to be taught on the next generation of servant leaders.

I.             Where Am I Now?

My submitted papers and class activities have help me to answer the question by reflecting on my life's journey to where I am now.

1.    Enneagram
Shown below is the summary of my enneagram result showing the most and least points I got on the different personality type.
Type
Score
Reflection

1 – Orderliness

Type 1 – 1pts
This is where I got a lowest point because a lot of times I don't focus on the instructions but rather on how people will execute. I am not the type of person to strictly implement instructions but hear other's opinion before execution.

2 – Helpfulness

Type 2 – 7pts
This is my highest score among all types because this holds true that I am "The Helper".  Most of the time I value others feelings and based my act on decisions not only according to myself.

3 – Image Focus

Type 3 – 5pts
Because I am a people person, there is a tendency that I always think of others perspective on me. I always try to focus on being a people with Integrity so that people would not lose trust on me as I lead them.

Learning Reflection:  The results just confirms on how I know well my personality.  Being the helper really reflects my attitude towards other people. Self awareness plays a vital role here to know my strengths. I will work on my lowest point and improve them so that I could use that as my learning points as I work on my weaknesses.

Regis Cebu Leadership – Leader Oliver Solijon – Final Integrative Paper

Regis Cebu Leadership – Leader Oliver Solijon – Final Integrative Paper
It can be said that leadership is the skill set for an individual to have an influence on a group of people, making this group work with enthusiasm in achieving common goals. It is defined as the ability to, manage, promote, take initiative, hold, motivate, encourage, and evaluate a group or team. In business management leadership is the exercise of executive activity in a project effectively and efficiently, whether personal or institutional management (within the organization's administrative process).
For the last eight weeks of the course, a lot of self-awareness was made. During the first session we were asked to define what leadership is. I volunteered and define it as a person who has strong willed to influence other people. For the record I was the first student who participated in the leadership class. Apart from that professor solicited ideas from other students in defining leadership.
The question on whether leaders are born, made or situational has been the topic of the debate during the first session. The group that defended the view that leaders are made, won the debate. I am so glad that I was part of that group. Although we won, in my own opinion leaders are a combination of the three- born, made and situational. The percentage for each may vary in every individual. Some may have strong innate leadership qualities and little amount of experience while others may have little inborn qualities while others are made because of their significant experiences.
According to Chris Lowney, author of the book Heroic Leadership, John Kotter has given the most concise definition of leadership.  Thus, he defines Leadership as establishing direction by developing a vision and strategies that will bring about changes needed to achieve that vision. It also means aligning people by imparting direction in words and deeds to all whose cooperation may be needed so as to influence the creation of teams and coalitions that will support the vision and strategies that will have to be carried out.
St. Ignatius style of teaching about leadership is that it is different from contemporary as well as the conventional style of leadership. St. Ignatius teaching about leadership differs in four ways; a) everbody is a leader and we are leading all the time, well or poor, b) leadership is from within and it is all about who I am as much as what I do, c) leadership is not an act, it is a way of living and d) leadership is an ongoing and continuous process.
The first group work of which the class was divided into four was about being a bad boss. The group has to plan a crime reflecting a bad leader. In our group we presented the corrupt practices in the government wherein red tape is rampantly done. The group work presentation that we had is slowly showing the kind of leadership we have.
The learning agreement which was one of the first assignments provides an introduction of myself and analysis of my strength and weaknesses. It also lay out my five year plan, objectives in taking the course and my desired grade for the course. Basically the learning agreement was the start of my self-awareness wherein we were encouraged to disclose some things in my life.
In the book Heroic Leadership, C. Lowney also cited the Jesuits' enduring leadership secrets which are the four core pillars or principles namely: self awareness- understanding one's strengths, weaknesses, values and worldview; ingenuity- the ability to adapt and innovate amidst a changing world; love- engaging others with a positive and loving attitude, unleashing their full potential; and lastly heroism- energizing oneself and others with heroic ambition and a passion for excellence.
The four core pillars of the Jesuits, I believe are the reasons behind their enduring success and longevity as an organization. These same principles are still applicable in the modern times.

CEBU Regis LEADERSHIP
FINAL INTEGRATION PAPER
Leader Kerwin Mark L. Gubantes, MD.

I. INTRODUCTION

What kind of a leader do I want to be? That is the question that was poised to us at the first day of our class. that is the same question that I wish to answer when the time is right. It was definitely an eye opener for me as I went through the difficult process of knowing myself - my strengths and weaknesses, my family profile, my enneagram , as well as my passion and the external and internal factors that affects me.
Self-awareness as was espoused by Chris Lowney in his book, stressed the importance of this important pillar along with Ingenuity, Heroism and Love in the development of a Great Leader from within ourselves. Our Emotional Intelligence is very much dependent in our ability to control our emotions and be able to have the motivation to move ourselves forward. To be able to lead others, we must be able to lead ourselves first.
Some of the notable answers that were given by my co-leaders on the question of leadership are the following; that leaders should be a catalyst for change; of being able to inspire people; of being able to motivate others and innovate. These concepts are very much being promulgated in the song "Pananagutan". It is a very beautiful song in my opinion primarily because it espoused accountability and servant leadership. Moreover , it encourages us to lead our people to the right path. These are concepts that are hard to come by these day and age. It is but fitting for us to discover leaders who have the audacity of showing us the right path like Pope Francis and who is willing to fight for truth and justice in our society. Leaders who are willing to sacrifice self-interest for the common greater good.

II. Where I am Now?

My Enneagram has revealed that I am a Loyalist and a reformer as well. Loyalist individuals have been defined as people who are committed and security-oriented. I can recall in the early years of my life in Elementary school, I was always encouraged by my parents especially my mother to focus on the goal at hand and that is to do good in school. She always tells me that a good education is the key out of our hardships cognizant of the fact that I was born to humble beginnings. That commitment carried me through the high school years and even though I was not the most technically gifted student in class, I was able to be a consistent honour student and graduated as the class Salutatorian. My early success in the Academic side of life has given me a good opportunity to seek higher education in a reputable school like the University of Santo Tomas . This is one of my defining moments. During those years, the EDSA Revolution was still very fresh in our memories and Probinsyanos like me relish the thought of the opportunity to learn and study in a good University like UST. Rich in history and tradition, I felt privileged to be part of. My days at the University has taken me through a memorable time with the Red Cross youth organization whereby we were organising activities geared towards helping people in need especially those who have been affected by natural calamities like Volcanic eruptions, floods and typhoons. My experience with community organising under the banner of LOTUS which is an acronym for the Legion of Organised Thomasian United for Service had also given me a new perspective in shaping my passion of helping others. We were sent through different parts of Luzon in response to Calamities which have affected our countrymen , brothers and sisters and friends. Relief work for me was both a challenge as well as a rewarding experience. It opened the deeper recesses of my senses to the realities of life and the dangers of the world that we live in.. It has taught me to be compassionate especially for people who has less in life.
As a Reformer, I am a Rational and a Principled person. I could relate this character of mine in 2007 when I came home to Dumaguete to start my young career in Head and Neck Surgery. As a junior consultant staff, I was very eager to prove myself worthy of respect from my peers. I was interested in participating in meetings and conferences geared towards improvement of one's craft however , the early experiences at that times not very pleasant and not according to my plans. I was literally disillusioned by the system being implemented by the Senior staff. I would like to think that they are just protecting there careers and earnings such that they refuse to concede patients under our specialty. It was a painful reality that I needed to deal with. This is the real world now - I told myself, not very ideal. I started to question myself if I made the right decision to come home and practice. Eight years later and now I realize that some things are not worth fighting and we would rather be productive citizens in some other ways. Looking at the many patients that I have helped and served, it was worth my while. It has all the more increased my resolve to be proactive and be a force of change. A change for the better. A change that will give equal opportunities for improving your craft and earning your keep. But most importantly, the change that I would like to achieve is a system whereby we could provide a standard Medical and Surgical care at significantly reduced costs to patients and clients.
In my Genogram, I mentioned that I had the privilege to witness firsthand the difficult life from my Father's side in Siquijor and the relative comfort living in my Mother's side in Dumaguete city. I saw the effects of the authoritarian style of my maternal grandfather and how it folded the lives of my Uncles with contrasting effects. Respect was paramount in the family and that I uphold to this day with my own family. Core values within the family like living with Integrity and honesty are important lessons which I intend to keep for as long as I can for these are the values which will keep me grounded and and carry me forward. My mother was a very important person in this regard. She has showed us to be resilient in the face of adversity and trials. She carried us through sheer grit and determination with the little earnings she had. On story was told of her having to pawn her own wedding ring just to provide for our needs. I just felt admiration and gratitude for her selfless love and devotion. It was God's grace that saw us through the trials and problems we faced then and now. I believe that who are we now and what we have achieved is reflective on how we lived our lives when we were young. I was always cognisant of the fact that if we waste precious resources and opportunities, our lives will be in misery. Leaders who do not learn from past mistakes will fall prey in committing the same mistakes in the present and the future. Growing up witnessing two different aspects of life has made me the grounded and humble person I am today. These experiences have arguably been invaluable in my dealings with our profession, our Medical Society and in our community.

III. Where I am going?

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said to Dr. Devi Prassad Shetty, a Cardiovascular surgeon in India, ' The Hands that serve are more sacred than the Lips that Pray". Dr. Shetty founded the Narayan Hospital Health system whereby he developed a MicroHealth Insurance system asking farmers in his community to contribute a measly 5 rupees/ month to avail of standard Medical and Surgical services in his hospital whenever they need one. This system has been very successful in his locality up to this day such that many big cities in India and other countries are trying to follow his model. Using the Principle of Economies of scale whereby they cater to a large group of patients at the same time to significantly reduce the costs of health care. For example an Open Heart surgery which would costs around 60 thousand USD in the US , will only cost around 1,800 USD in his facility given the same standard of care. Cataract surgeries could performed for only 5USD as well as Dialysis sessions for only 10USD. Can we follow this model here in our society, my answer will be an emphatic YES! We just need to have the commitment and passion to achieve the goal. I would like to quote what he said, ' If you want to change the way things are, you have to keep walking. You have to make progress and in some things you will succeed and some things you will fail; But for as long as your intention is to help mankind, and convince that I will succeed, but in the process a lot of things that we never anticipate may happen, something good, something bad, we have to keep walking because that is the only way we can reach our destination" , end of quote. Judging from his words, I can perceive that he is a very humble and simple person with a very compassionate heart for the poor and the needy. In there hospital, they have claimed to have never turned away Paediatric patients who seek there expertise in Heart surgery even though these patients could not afford to pay for the services rendered. I would like someday to Emulate what Dr. Shetty is doing for his countrymen in India and replicate it in our community. It has been done so it is not impossible. He has shown us that he is a good example of a Great Leader, a game-changer as they call him who is aware of his self, his strengths and weaknesses and is very smart in exploiting the opportunities that he faced. He was not afraid to fail because he knew how to get up everytime he fell. He kept on walking until he reached his destination. You can readily see his passion in his work and in his desire to help those who needed him and his expertise. I am far from being Dr. Shetty and what he has done and achieved for himself and his people. But I share the passion of helping others with him and for me that is a start. Being in the Medical Profession just like him gives me the platform I needed to serve others. My experiences in the Red Cross youth organizing Missions to my Volunteer work in an NGO performing Surgical Missions for free is walking towards the destination. <we resonate on this Doctor;  let us keep in touch and pursue same ideals>I have a long way to go but I am not afraid to take the journey. I remember how St. Ignatius Loyola embarked on a 2000 mile journey o the Holy Land only to be deported 2 weeks after and went back to Europe to discover his Self and his purpose in Life. I remember Benedetto de Goes who persevered and pressed on with his journey through three mile high mountains passes despite bitter cold and fear of not finding the mysterious Cathay. Each one of us has our own journey to fulfill and just like St . Ignatius who was able to influence and motivate 9 other people to come with him in his journey to create the Society of Jesus and fulfil there goal, I intend to influence other interested people to align with my goal of creating a system of health care for the poor. According to Chris Lowney, Leadership is not merely getting the job done; it is how the job is done', for all leaders this means influencing, visioning, persevering, energizing, innovating and teaching.

IV. How do I get there?

My strategic Plan is divided into three components.

A. Personal
Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle and good health is paramount towards achieving the goal. Poor Health is a big obstacle because it lessens our capacity to work properly and be able to effectively help others. Eating the right food and maintain my exercise regimen like biking at least twice a week and swimming in the sea at least once a week will be helpful and fun. On the Academic side, my learnings and experiences in the MBA program of AGSB will be very crucial for me in creating the process and system of the Health care model which will substantially reduce the Health care costs just like what Dr. Shetty did in Narayana Hospital . Even though I am just in my second subject right now after ManDyn, I have significantly increased my level of Understanding in the dynamics of the business and the intricacies as well as the self awareness in my strengths and weaknesses as well as my purpose in Life.. Improving my Emotional Intelligence will be important especially in dealing with different difficult circumstances and people in the Industry that I am involved with. As Daniel Coleman pointed out in his book on Emotional Intelligence, ' A Good Leader should know his strengths and weaknesses, values and goals, should know how to control disruptive emotions, be motivated , show empathy and be able to manage relationships'. Above all these things is my strong Faith in HIM who created me, for without Him, I am nothing. All of these Endeavour and handwork will be for nothing if I don't include Him in my Plans - Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.

B. Family
As shown in my AVP, I have always drawn my strength from my nuclear family. My parents who had impressed upon me the value of a good education and handwork. Leadership is about defining moments and my experiences growing up in a very supportive family structure has been one of my defining moments. They gave me the opportunity to reach my goals early in life and who I am today is largely because of the Love and support that they unselfishly gave me. So as I continue to pursue my purpose and my passion in life, I will always go back to my family for moral and emotional support. I am thankful to my co-leaders Bryan and Genevieve who facilitated the Team Building process. It was an emotional and amazing experience for me to learn how my wife and children appreciated what I am doing and there show of support through the letter I received was a very powerful example of how Love can be an important force for good and change. My supportive wife made me realize the strengths and weaknesses I have and I will do my best to improve upon them. One of the Leadership lessons I learned from the great Mahatma Gandhi is " You must be the change you wish to see in the world".

C. Work
I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to work as a physician and a Surgeon at the same time. My Profession is a good platform for me to serve others and the community as a whole. It is a tough task to follow the footsteps of Dr. Devi Shetty and what he continues to do at the Narayana Hospital in India , but I will try even if I am the only one- I hope not. I Have found my Purpose in Life and I will work hard for it. I remember what the late Steve Jobs said during a commencement exercise in Stanford, espoused Love and Passion for your work. He is a firm believer that when you Love what you are doing and you are passionate about it, then it is not very difficult to excel and achieve excellence. His Work ethic is a good example of Achievement Culture. You will often hear statements like ' Love your work' and Don't waste your time" in his speeches. Up to this day Apple company which he founded has remained at the top of Fortune 500. I will continue to remain committed to my passion of helping others through my work day in and day out as I walk towards my destination. I may stumble but for sure I will get up and move towards the goal. It may take 10 or 15 years from now, I don't mind, for sure I will put my Heart and Soul into it. Are you with me?

GOD Bless us ALL!

Regis Cebu Leadership - Leader Maricel Ngo –Final Integrated Paper ( the final )

Please disregard prof the last two emails. I had problems po kasi in attaching my graphics. Please consider this as the final paper. I used my gmail account coz my yahoo account is having problems in graphics po. <every smart guy uses Gmail now>

I. Where I am now?

Defining Moment

The highlight of my defining moment paper and my self-discovery is tabulated below:

Defining Moment
What lessons I learned from these experiences
My Childhood Experience
( Feeling Dejected )

On every thorn, delightful wisdom grows. In every rill, a sweet instruction flow – Edward Young
I have struggled seeking for an answer why my parents provided  me only so little of the positive guidance I need as a child? In doing the genogram, they also were not blessed with a nurturing family.  Indeed, from such experience, a delightful wisdom grows and that is to start it with my family( a loving family)  so a feeling of dejection will stop in my generation.
Being the Head of the Family
( Feeling Fatigued)

The seat of knowledge is in the head, of wisdom, in the heart.
William Hazlitt
In my early years as a working professional, I believed that providing for the basic needs of my family is a noble act without realizing how I made them so dependent on me. There are other forms of help that is more enduring like making them realize the importance of self-worth.
My Marriage
( Feeling Hurt at first but feeling loved)

Things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out.
John Wooden
Acceptance and forgiveness are two virtues that help me go on with my life. I became a more engaged, more involved, more responsive and loving- wife and mother because of that painful experience.

My Profession
( Feeling Fulfilled)
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life
Confucius
"….business practitioner seeking to become a professional and ethical business leader committed to nation-building".
In everything I do, I always revisit this vision of ATENEO.  As an educator, I should make a difference to positively impact the lives of our students. In business, I should be more mindful on how I  can help the local economy and the community.

Being a mother
( feeling inspired )
People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Abraham Lincoln
I have a vision for my children as I presented in my Call to Arms speech.  I feel inspired to see how they will become someday with proper guidance and mindset.

Enneagram

Taking enneagram helped me validate behaviors that I normally exhibit.  The characteristics of the personality type that best described me are affecting the way I respond to situations. Being more aware of my strengths and weaknesses based on my personality type will somehow improve the way I perform my responsibilities at home, in our business, in my profession and the various organizations that I lead. I should strive to capitalize on my strengths but must guard my weaknesses.

Results of my enneagram revealed a personality 8 type which is a "CHALLENGER"

A challenger ( personality 8)  is described as:
1)                   Strong and assertive but sometimes can be ego-centric and domineering.
2)             Self- mastering- they use their strength to improve others' lives, becoming heroic, magnanimous, and inspiring but confrontational, intimidating, loud and controlling.

My 2nd personality I am exhibiting is personality type 7 which is an "Enthusiast"

As enthusiast ( personality 7) is described as:
1)   generous, energetic, lively and optimistic but they tend to be over- extended, scattered, and undisciplined.

My personal reflection on taking enneagram is "As we age, the result will vary. People that we welcome to our lives whom we consider our mentors and coaches somehow influence our views and behavior. Then we embrace it. Now, the people I am working with, the family culture of my in-laws change my views about life. If I were confined with the values and family culture I had during my childhood years, my personality results would be different. That is why leaders are born twice. Our experiences and the people we met will reveal to us our new sense of identity as leaders."

Chapter 6 of the book of Chris Lowney presented "The Spiritual Exercises", a life long development tool. The book says "The exercises demand total intellectual, emotional, and spiritual engagement. Accordingly, they monopolize focus and energy for their thirty-day duration".  While enneagram is one tool to know our personality, strengths, values and weaknesses, the spiritual exercise is considered indeed a more powerful tool. I can say it is more powerful as most Jesuits personify heroic leadership as what is written in the book.  It an effective tool for self-awareness as evident in the  growing number of Jesuits and the schools they are managing to realize the vision of Ignatius Loyola.

Genogram

At first, I had apprehension in doing genogram.  Perhaps, it is the traumatic experiences during my childhood especially the encounters I had with my relatives ( father's side). It can also be the hardship of being poor. Before taking this subject, I have to admit that I feel that I am a victim but in the course of this "Leadership" class, I realized that my past leads me to where I am now, a better "ME".

I am fascinated with the result of the genogram. It made me realize so many things about myself, my family and my passion. Some of the realizations include:

1)   I should live a healthy lifestyle
Being aware of the medical risk in the family, I should make a conscious effort in living a healthy lifestyle. According to Chris Lowney's book, the foundation to ingenuity is to make ourselves indifferent. Only by becoming indifferent – free of prejudices and attachments and therefore free to choose any course of action – do recruits become strategically flexible. In relation of this concept to genogram, becoming indifferent does not only improve relationships. It can also be a more noble or heroic act and that is helping save other people's live. In my case, I should create awareness among our families about this medical risk.
2)   My motivation to finish a college degree is to give pride and honor to my family – mother side. I realize I can do more for my relatives, more than material things or financial help.  Help them change their poor mindset of "we are born poor, we die poor" will benefit the next generation of Aquino clan.
3)   The "entrepreneurial mind-set" is innate in the family of my father where most of my uncles/aunties were entrepreneur.  My "lolo" passed it on to his children.  Now, I myself run businesses, which I think, is also innate in me.
4)   I want to bring back the old times where my relatives from my father side organized reunions/ family gatherings. As cousins, we were close before and now that we are a bit older, I want to lead all our family reunions to nurture our relationship.

My Life Story ( J. Campbell)

In doing the J. Campbell exercise, a lot of self-discovery happened. I realized that partly, I am "go-getter" person. I am determined to get what I want. My victory over  MATH subject (during freshman years in college) made me believe that you can do anything as long as you put your heart on it.  Indeed, everything happens for  a reason. My experience as college instructor in Manila was a big factor why I got hired as school administrator of STI College Ormoc. It was not an easy road for me but in the end I survive with a lot of lessons learned as adaptive challenges were present in my leadership as school administrator.

As explained in the HBR – Work in Leadership, solutions to adaptive challenges reside to the collective intelligence of employees at all levels. In the education sector, our target market shifted program preference aside from the stiff competition. Getting the right people on board, empowering them, leveraging on their capabilities and wit and instilling in them sense of ownership are some of our solutions to these adaptive challenges.

Internal and External Factor that Shape me

To summarize my realizations in doing reflection paper 2,

1)    As to the external factors that shaped me:

Family - it is said in the HBR – Authentic Leadership, motivation to become an authentic leader came from the difficult experiences in our lives. The feeling of being rejected by my family, the instability of my father's business cause by vices and poor financial management are reasons why I considered myself a victim before.  They taught me to become a strong person. They are my motivation to make things right for my family.

Work – My boss and STI executives provided me insights on how great corporate culture is. I truly treasure this experience for I apply these learnings to my own businesses. My work provides me so much fulfillment seeing our graduates succeed in their chosen careers.

Husband and in-laws- My husband and in-laws taught the importance of SAVING and BUDGETING. Their influence shaped me to strive in providing a nurturing environment for my family.

SUPPORT Group- our Couples for Christ community has greatly influenced me to be leader with a heart and to strive to become a Christ-like leader.

2)    Knowing my strengths and weaknesses leads me to deep understanding of myself. Assessing my strengths and weaknesses is essential in knowing the type of work environment that I can make the greatest contribution.

One of the things I am fascinated about is my growing network of partners/friends/groups which leads me to identifying my strengths that resulted to such accomplishment.

1)    I am a people-person  ( People skills ) – I love relating to people. As explained by John Maxwell, "People are the most precious of resources. Your success, fulfillment, and happiness depend on your ability to relate well to different kinds of people".

2)    Passion for learning –  In my quest to new learnings, I am always in the look-out for mentors, coaches and role model. They are so many of them in socio-civic organizations, graduate schools-classmates and professors, corporation and even business clients. I also read books on leadership and business. In my work, I always think on how every lesson I gain can be applied to my personal  and professional life.

3)    Communicator and critical thinker – because of these strengths, people value my inputs and insights that I can confidently communicate. Such insights ( result of number 2 ) are instrumental in the success of the organization's plans and programs.

4)    Motherly touch – being affectionate. Showing tender and love to people earns their trust

I have to guard my weaknesses though. To name a few, a) Lack of focus – tendency to play the role of "jack of all trades" b) poor in execution c) hesitant to express my real feelings especially if it will hurt the other party.  <Be duterte at times>

Wheel of Leadership of Leader Atty Glym Reuyam

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Rizal Philippines
January 15, 2015

I took the liberty of posting the wheel of Leadership created by Leader Atty Glym Reuyam.  She is the thirdstudent Leader who submitted/created one. The other two were Leaders Dra. Suzette Kabigting Munoz and Rheat Mutuc. This is a proof that the Leader has clearly understood the fully meaning of leadership, and hence has encapsulated this in his/her own wheel.  His wheel is is his own theory/understanding of leadership.

I got a text that there will be a fourth one from Leader Andre.  He did not append this to his FIP. Wheel of Leadership makes the FIP grade 4.

Great job.  Bravo Zulu

Congratulations!

Regis Cebu Leadership | Leader Melissa Abarrientos | Reflection paper 3

Dear prof.,

It took me great time to be able to put my passion into words.

Reflection Paper 3

Discovering My Passion

What is my passion? – I remember this question way back after I graduated high school. I was so overwhelmed choosing what course to take for my college degree. Then I thought of taking up Accountancy like my mother. Most of my classmates followed their parent's footprint so I wanted to follow my mother's. When I told her of my decision, she immediately objected and told me to take a course I am good at. She knew I do not love math or anything with numbers. She cited a litany of my attitude, strengths and weaknesses that will precede my success in the course. She knew what and which things will bore me out my enthusiasm; and she concluded that conversation with "take a course that you  will love to practice and will perfectly suit your personality and interest so you won't feel like going to school was a task".  She was right. I took up a course that I interested me all throughout and I learned my lessons by heart. My mother was the first to open my awareness about myself and introduced me my first passion: Communicating with people. By studying Psychology my "Inter and intra personal relationships were better.

This passion was further enhanced and intensified when I joined the art group. This time, communication was a bit more challenging. In verbal communication, it's easier to communicate and articulate to people what you want to express and say compared to visual presentation and communicate what you want to express and say hoping people will understand what you want to convey to the society. A picture paints a thousand words. (Below was a picture of my artwork way back 11 years ago.)

School loses PAASCU Accreditation? Is this confirmed? Can this affect your business education and degree?

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Philippines,  December 30, 2015

Top business leaders in Pampanga with the Professor

It is the 119th death anniversary of  Dr Jose Rizal, the acclaimed national hero, and a foremost alumnus  And today, I have been seeing a lot of posts and criticisms on loss of  PAASCU  (loss na ba talaga? Is the news accurate.  I searched the net for the news and there was none) accreditation for distinguished GSB. A former student in Clark texted me her concern on the hearsays and grapevine news on the possible withdrawal of the said accreditation. She is on Special Program, and is worried that she may not get the  diploma from abroad  or that the  Program will be discontinued.?

PAASCU accreditation of the  University

Brief History  PAASCU accreditation

The school applied for accreditation in 2004 and was accredited in 2010.  I was all ready a part time faculty at that time (and still is ) and we participated in the process.  It was a long and tedious process.   Now as to the loss of accreditation, from my limited knowledge, the school management could have not complied or stalledto comply with several things that are necessary for the re accreditation.  We do not exactly know what happened as to why these things were not attended to.

The question to be raised here are:

1. Prior to 2010, was the quality education lesser compared to 2010 or after?

2.  Did more students enroll after 2010 due to PAASCU accreditation?

3.  Was the foreign school program running prior to PAASCU accreditation.?

Cebu Regis Leadership Genogram by Ivy Eleanor Ko

Dear Professor Jorge

I am submitting my genogram paper
sorry i was not able to submit on time
Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Cebu Regis Leadership Genogram by Ivy Eleanor Ko

I.             Genogram – Dissecting my Family Tree

A.   Grandparents' (Father Side)

The Uy-Yap clan is very small compared to the families during their generation. A lot of their relatives were still in China. Moreover, they were born during the WWII era, thus life was not easy. Ham Chiong and Yap Tin were originally from China, they met and married in Cebu. Ham Chiong ventured into several businesses to support his family while Yap Tin managed the household. Growing up, Papa said that Angkong is the spoiler, while Ama is the disciplinarian.

My paternal grandfather, (Angkong), Uy Ham Chong is the eldest in a family of 2 children. I was not able to meet my Angkong, but I know he was very hardworking and loving. I can see this with my dad and his siblings.

(1)     Ham Chong: Ang Kong arrived Cebu at the age of 4 to escape the harsh life in Amoy, China, together with his parents. He was only able to finish highschool education. To be able to support his family, he did all sorts of job from being a salesman, to producing firecrackers and eventually building misua factory. Most of his business does not prosper due to his lack of business acumen, generosity and good naturedness. He died due to complications bought about by diabetes and heart condition.

(2)   Valerio: Valerio is the adopted brother of Ham Chiong. Though he was never able finish college, his interest in radio and parts motivated him to complete schooling thru correspondence certification exams. This enabled him to operate a big radio and electronics store in the city. He married Betty, and has only one child, Derrick.

Papa's mother, Yap Tin, is the second child amongst a family of 5 children. According to my aunt, Ama's siblings are born with health problems that is why they did not live for long. Ama is very artistic, a good cook, and very fashionable. I just learned her parents had a cloth store when they were younger.

Regis Cebu Leadership Call to Arms by Leader Ivy Eleanor Ko- My Liquid Gold journey

To Professor Jorge, and leader classmates, Fellow Parents and Soon to be parents. , Good Morning

Have you ever heard of the Milk Code?

Yes, there is a Philippine law on milk. Breast milk in particular. The Milk Code or Executive Order 51, signed by then president Corazon Aquino was implemented in 1986 (the first in asia), is the law that protects and promotes breastfeeding in the Philippines. It regulates the industry of formula milk and other milk products that there should be no form of advertising or promotion of milk formula to the public and medical authorities are expected to play a part in the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding in the country.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), the Philippines is one of the 37 countries that fully implemented this milk code, Ironically, after almost 29 years, surveys show that Filipino mothers have yet to fully grasp the benefits of feeding their infants exclusively with their breast milk. Only 34% of infants under 6 months are breastfed. Most mothers still opt to use milk formulas for various reasons such as alleged inability to produce breast milk and time constraints. Although an improvement from 2011's 27%, these findings still put the country with lowest percentage of breastfed babies.

Movie Synopsis, Analysis of JCampbell's Monomyth and My Life Story

Synopsis of the Movie Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump movie was created in Year 1994 with starring Tom Hunks is my selected film for my paper. This follows the life events of a man who shares the name as the title of the film. Gump faces many tribulations throughout his life, but he never lets any of them interfere with his happiness. From wearing braces on his legs, to having a below average IQ and even being shot, Gump continues to believe that good things will happen and goes after his dreams. While several less than ideal things occur during Gump's life, he manages to turn each setback into something good for him, such as when he finally gets his braces off he discovers that he is capable of running faster than most other people. This skill allows Gump to not only escape his bullies while he is a child in Greenbow, but also to gain a football scholarship, save many soldiers' lives and become famous for his ability. While Gump eventually achieves the majority of the things he hoped to throughout the movie, it proved a much more difficult task to win the heart of his life-long friend Jenny Curran. The movie is centered on Forrest Gump and the incidences that occur during his life, but during each period in his lifetime he thinks back of Jenny and how important she is to him. Although the two characters grew up together and shared a very close friendship, as the movie progresses they grow apart. This upsets Gump who cares immensely for the girl who had a rough start in life, and it seems the two always end up back in each other's lives, often in extraordinary ways like meeting in the Reflection Pond in D.C. Even though Gump is the main character of the film, it similarly tells the story of Curran and the hardships she faces.

The Hero is introduced in his ordinary world
"Stupid is as stupid does" is what Forrest Gump hears throughout his less than picturesque childhood. Though not as smart as the people he meets along the way, Forrest is thrust into some scary, crazy and downright incredible situations, rubbing shoulders with some great historical figures and escaping many dangers on sheer dumb-luck. His giant heart and never fading love for his lifelong friend Jenny take him on a journey where he learns what his destiny is.

CEBU REGIS LEADERSHIP GENOGRAM by Leader Leonard Castañeda

My Genogram

GRANDPARENTS

Father's Side

No information available

I do not even know their names. I do remember my father telling me that he was in high school when they died. They were very poor and could barely afford to send their children to school. They hail from Imus, Cavite, and according to my father, our family started from a Spanish priest who apparently could not keep his vow of celibacy.

Mother's Side

HILARION "LARIO" GAITAN GALLENTES (+)

My grandfather was born on February 2, 1922, and was an Ilonggo from the island province of Guimaras. he was a teenager during the second world war. I remember him telling me how Japanese soldiers once forced him to carry their supplies and officers across the river. He migrated to Mindanao with his wife in the 1960, when my grandmother was assigned as a school teacher in Pagadian City. There, being only a high school graduate, he worked as a humble clerk in our provincial capitol of Zamboanga del Sur until his retirement in the early 80's. He was the 6th of 7 siblings (Ambrosio, Lorenza, Lucia, Florencio, Silvestra, and Aniana), all of whom, except one, I have never met, since I have never been to Guimaras. He died of old age in 2000.

MARIA SOCORRO "CORRO" GASTIL GALLENTES (+)

Born in September 17, 1920, my grandmother came from Iloilo and was a schoolteacher. She was teaching in Iloilo when she first met her husband. Soon after they got married, they left for Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur, where she taught in one of the public elementary schools. In their time, you only needed two years of college to teach, but this was changed around the time when my mom was in high school, so around that time, both of them went to school together.

No one impressed on me the value of education more than my grandmother, who, despite their meager income, managed to send all her children to college.  My grandmother taught me to read at a very young age, and because of this, I was considered good enough to skip kindergarten and go straight to first grade at the age of 5. She was my first tutor in everything, and I also remember her teaching me my first Bible verses. She would always bring me to church and leave me in Sunday School with other children. She had only one sibling, ALEJANDRA GASTIL BUCOG (+), who was also an elementary school teacher. She died in March 2004.

All of my grandparent's children are working, of have worked, in government, like their parents. My mother's siblings are:

LILLIAN GALLENTES, has a BS Business Administration, major in Marketing degree from Mindanao State University, used to work in the Development Bank of the Philippines and the Department of Trade and Industry.

NELSON GALLENTES, a BS Forestry graduate of  Gregorio Araneta Universtiy, works in the Bureau of Immigration.

LINA GRACE GALLENTES-BARBASO, a Psychology major from Silliman University, is an administrative officer in the provincial government of Zamboanga Sibugay.

PARENTS

PEDRO 'PETE" LOPEZ CASTAÑEDA (+)

My father was a working student who lived with his aunt and uncle in San Juan after his parents passed away. They agreed to take him in, but could not promise him a college education. He then worked in various jobs, from messenger to kargador in the Manila pier, while at the time studying Accountancy in the University of the East. He told me that he used to study under a truck during their breaktime, and that he flunked the board the first time he took it because he was often too tired to seriously study. He had various jobs until he got a break with Pilipinas Shell, Inc., where he served as company comptroller. He was also assigned to their operations in Nigeria for a while. He left Shell in 1987 and started a couple of small businesses. Aside from being one of the top executives of his company, he was a boxer, a chess player (with national master rating, according to him) and a 2nd-dan black belt in Karate. He died on June 28, 2001 from cardiac arrest after completing a 10 km jog with boxers in training at the Elorde Gym in Parañaque. One of the reasons why I chose Ateneo for my MBA was because he too finished his MBA in Ateneo ( batch '79). <that was when I finished my MBA academics at de la Costa, ka batch ko?>

Regis Cebu Leadership - Leader Oliver Solijon - Reflection Paper # 2 - External and Internal Factors That Shape Me

Regis Cebu Leadership – Leader Oliver Solijon – Reflection Paper 2 – External and Internal Factors That Shape Me
External Factor
Family.
I came from an average income family. I am the eldest among the three siblings. My father had his career then at a Government owned National Power Corporation for 15 years before he decided to avail of their early retirement program while my mother was with Cebu Normal University until her retirement 3 years ago.
With both parents working in a government offices, our life then was financially tight as they were raising me and my siblings with age gaps of 1 and 3 yrs in between. Though financially tight, one dilemma that we faced then was my father's vice, gambling. Gambling was already my father's way of life. As he was telling me, since he was a little boy he already got hooked to it with the influence of his friends. Although my grandfather know and didn't tolerate it he was also a gambler himself, he eventually taught my father the different ways and techniques in gambling as he prepared him in his journey to college away from their hometown. And the very reason of my grandfather was he doesn't want my father to be fooled if ever he chance upon on betting a gambling game especially that he is already in a different place.

The Cebu AGSB outreach event for the underprivileged children of Mandaue

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Rizal Philippines
December 15, 2015

Leaders Bryan (in Santa attire) and Oliver distribute the gifts

Photo ops of the Leadership Class and the Cebu AGSB SC

The last part of team building last December 12, 2015,   After watching the Chicken A la Carte, a short Indie film that won at Cannes, the leaders were asked to write a commitment on what they can do about this lack of access to the bounty of this earth by many (nearly 50% of the world and country's population.  Many are limited by their attitude - timidity, lack of ambition, fear, lethargy (or laziness) but this is real problem we must face.  Many about 10,000 a day die because of hunger because we waste food.

I happened to meet a German fraulein at the gym of the hotel where I was staying.  I learned that she was on R & R from Borongan Samar.  She works for Caritas an organization that has been in the Philippines for the last two years taking care of Yolanda victims at Borongan.  We should admire these volunteers and workers for being interested in the plight of our brethren who are less fortunate, or who were ravaged by the typhoon.  How about us?  Some take advantage of the situation to earn more for them or we simply do not care.

This post had a lengthy conversation with leader Dovie who is running a 300 bed hospital,  I campaigned to her to help keep costs of health care low, as was expressed by Dr. Kerwin Mark Gubantes on the first day of class.  The take over by multibillion companies of several  well known hospitals has caused the cost of health care to skyrocket.  It is all about profit now and when will it end and increasingly, the very high costs of hospitalization may bankrupt Philhealth, burn holdes in the pockets of many.  The masses can ill afford health care and may not even see a doctor in their lifetime (a herbalist maybe)  Thus I labor with this site:   Cheapcures that focus on preventive medicine other lower cost health strategies.  I am but one who is campaigning for this   As leader Bryan had said, take baby steps towards your goal.
