I often see the musings of Tina Monson Palma regarding ending corruption in the Philippines. That is her role as media man to communicate what is right and to be idealistic. I used to be idealistic. But her comments/prescriptions do not recognize the reality of power like we end the dominance of partisan politics and personalities and go by way of what is right and just. In the Philippines to stay in power to gain dominance in politics, the route is via parties and families and personality and thus, it will just be all talk
In my experience there are 3 options to send corruption
1. Revolution by straight guys to cut clean corruption. Its chance of succeeding is maybe 5%. However because of activities of NPA, the idea of revolution as a solution is still alive.
2. Dictatorship - A strongman must head the nation to enforce the rules as the Singaporean model showed. As in China too exemplified by President Xi Jin Ping One recalls the definition of a President of Pepsi (who led the Pepsi challenge campaign) that "Leadership is taking a point of view and expressing it forcefully" Force may be necessary at times to enforce what is the right thing to do. As a lady businessman expressed, "management, even consultants must be energetic, forceful, and dominant" for them to succeed and to make the business they are consulting for successful. They can not be just peace loving observers. (Top down approach)
3. The Chris Lowney approach - bottoms up approach. That leadership must start from individuals through self awareness, to ingenuity, heroism and love; That was the thesis of leadership class I conducted. I hope that made a lot of difference to the student leaders who were with me and that they will be able to make a lot of changes in their sphere of influence.
Leadership subject at AGSB is an Ateneo advantage. It emphasizes leadership from within, authentic leadership. One of its pillars is love. This is odd in a cold steely corporate world. The others are heroism, ingenuity and self awareness. The goal of leadership is not only to develop oneself but to clone other leaders. Everybody has potential to be leader. What we do, even if we do not have followers influences/affects others. It is time to define Filipino leadership too

The handsome SS signage
We would do most of the team building activities here. The beautiful
scenery reflects the other beauty of Cebu
This post feels and thinks that every leadership subject must have practical leadership games exercises, outside the campus. Team building activities, when well planned and executed can achieve any or all of the following:
1. communication skills and processes
2. teamwork and bonding
3. problem solving skills
4. strategizing
And many leaders, even though they have become jaded corporate leaders/managers have been energized by team, building, and even those who have presided over team building activities. Each team building go through different direction because of different sites, participants and structures. And this team building was no exception
Thus after egging on the volunteers (by asking initially who have experience in teambuilding) our team building gurus Bryan Peter Evangelista an AVP Sales Director and formerly a training manager at PruLife, and Genevieve (a member of millionaires club in IL) came out with a plan in ppt which they submitted 3 days before last Saturday and which revolve around the 4 pillars of leadership. I had to extend my stay in Cebu because they say it may extend up to 8 o clock in the evening of Saturday
Chronology of events:
The first one to arrive, the early bird was of course, Leader Bryan, followed by Leader Dovie. A relative or a friend owns the venue. I was fetched by Leader Atty Glym from the hotel with Judge Jerry as the driver (thanks po) at 7:00 We arrived almost 8:00 Leader Andre fetched leader Maricel and Isi from the ports. The others arrived at about 8 and later thereabouts.

Leadership in whatever we do though we do not have followers - story of Dr. Vivien Thomas
'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)
Philippines, September 30, 2015
Dr Vivien Thomas at Wiki
While in a hotel room, I happened to watch the movie at HBO, Something the Lord Made, a movie about Dr. Vivien Thomas, a black lab research assistant, and Dr. Alfred Blalock. We are reminded of book Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney, Chapter 4, page 63 on leadership role models. The characters mentioned: Jesuits Benedetto Goes, Matteo Ricci and Christopher Clavius are most unlikely leaders in the way we ordinary sense we understand it. They are considered leaders though they do not have a battalion of followers, but in being good/the best in what they do.
Same thing with Dr. Vivien Thomas. He was called doctor at John Hopkins University Hospital, an honorary degree though he barely passed high school.
