FINAL INTEGRATIVE PAPER

SUM OF ALL LEARNINGS AND ITS PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Leadership don't just happen to us, it happens from us and our path, meaning all the occurrence in our lives, are all pointing out to this very important mission of ours, which is LEADERSHIP.  This is the biggest revelation and discovery that unfolded to me in taking this subject. The dynamics of classroom activities and exercises conducted helped us discover the very core of ourselves as a leader.  The next section of this paper highlights the important topics that created an impact on me and how I was able to integrate them in my role as a Leader. 

Leadership and Self-awareness

             In my seventeen years working in the company, I have attended different trainings focusing on developing technical skills related to my job and management skills needed in my role as a manager.  Little did I realize that in order to be a good and authentic leader, our journey must first start with our self.

            During our first session, one of the main discussion is on Self-awareness which was agreed as an essential element in our success as a leader.  Truly, in any endeavor, we should always start with our self.  As a leader, we are entrusted with a very big responsibility in leading not only the organization but people as well.  Thus, in our position, we have the power to influence other people thru our actions and words.  We are also faced with different challenges and conflicts which at times makes us doubt on ourselves. Therefore a high degree of self-awareness is important in facing these challenges.  Actually, in a research conducted by Green Peak Partners in 2010, 72 executives of successful private and public institution in America were studied and they identified self-awareness as the strongest predictor of success in their responsibility as a Leader.  A self-aware leader has realistic assessment of himself, his  strengths, weaknesses and limitations and how their behavior affects others.  The following activities also further reinforced our journey to self-awareness:

            Reflection 1 on Defining Moments - This undertaking allowed me to identify the important events in my life that helped me developed skills and traits needed to become a leader.  It turned out that series of crises are turning points leading on my path to leadership.

            Leadership in Movies - Heroic Leadership by Campbell.  This activity allowed us to look back on the significant events in our lives that lead us to our position as a Leader.  We were also oriented with the Heroic Leadership concept outlined by Campbell and how it relates to us and the heroic character we have chosen in movies.  I also learned that Heroes' story have almost similar patterns.

Reflection Paper # 3.  What is your Passion?

A PASSION TO SERVE

            When we were task to come up with a speech and reflection paper about our passion, I had to engage myself in deep thought trying to figure out what my passion really is.  Although I have passion for cars and fixing things, I thought they are too petty for this undertaking.  That is why I try to recollect and review all my reflection papers and self awareness activities on this subject.   One theme stood out with all my work, that is my PASSION to be of service to others.  This has been evident not only in my work life but in my personal life as well. 

            I grew up in a family where "helping others" has been a norm.  There were only few occasions  where our family had to live with family members only, for we always have a relative or two who lives with us because my parents adopted them either temporarily or permanently.  Even when we moved in Manila, our house was frequented by visitors and relatives from the province who seek for help either financially or for a temporary shelter while they are working on some document.  My parents modeled in us the value of being generous and helpful without asking anything in return.  Their generosity is not limited to material and financial aspects, more than anything else, they are more than willing to give their precious time to others.   My mother would accompany friends and relatives in the hospital, BIR, GSIS, SSS, Philhealth etc.  I witness with my parents what "selfless giving" means. Likewise, my past experiences of pains, disappointments, frustrations and failures also allowed me to develop important virtues and values that helped me in my relating with other people... And I believe this is where my motivation to help others and to be of service to others emanated.

My speech today is related with Tsinelas...it's called the "TSINELAS Leadership".  It's a brand of the late DILG Cabinet Secretary Jesse Robredo.... If we remember, Robredo died on a plane crash in Masbate last August 18 of 2012. The concept of Tsinelas Leadership was conceived after the death of Robredo.  It was actually conceptualized by former Energy Secretary Rene Almendras and introduced during his Eulogy at the wake of Secretary Robredo.  He coined it "Tsinelas Leadership" because tsinelas , t-shirt and shorts were Robredo's signature attire , who had been known to show up for work and wade the flooded streets of Naga in slippers, ready to get his feet wet...

The Shaping of a Leader

            There has been long debate as to whether leaders are born or made.  Just like the "Nature and Nurture" controversy, both factors are rather essential in the unfolding of a leader.  While nature provides us with innate qualities needed to be effective leaders, these potentialities would not be realized without the "right environment".   The culture we grew up which plays a significant role in the development of our personality and skills as a leader.  Our family exhibits the most important influence as far as our personality is concerned.  Second to the family is the community we live in.   On our road to leadership, self awareness is one of the most important and yet often neglected competency of a leader.  A self-aware leader is one who knows his strengths and how to capitalize on them.  He also has a great deal of awareness  and acknowledgment of his weaknesses and limitations and continuously strive for self-improvement.  As we revisit our past, we will try to analyze how our environment and significant others and events in our life have been instrumental in our journey to leadership.  Knowing and acknowledging our roots gives us a sense of identity and a sense of pride on our humble beginnings.

Father Side

ł Jose (grandfather) – I don't have an account of my grandfather since he died already by the time I was born.  My grandfather worked as an auditor at the Commission on Audit. He is described as generous, accommodating and gets along well with the people in their community.  Our ancestral house is frequented by people coming from the province and my grandfather welcome them with open arms.

ł Avelina (grandmother) – My grandmother died during World War II.  I had no recollection of her. My father was 2 years old when she died that's why she grew up with his stepmother.

ł  Manuel  (Father) – Born on  November 11, 1940  – My father is an only child.  He grew up with his cousins.  He studied at the University of the East. My father acquired the traits of being generous and hospitable like my grandfather.  He grew up in Pasay and was known in their community as tough yet friendly.

"FOLLOW YOUR BLISS"

            The movie "Three Idiots" is an Indian movie released in 2009 and was adapted from the novel "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat.  It is a comic, light hearted film which offers serious insights about life, learning and friendship.  It tackles about the most important human pursuit which is self-actualization.  The message of Joseph Campbell to "Follow your Bliss" is perfectly related to this movie.  It shows how some students are force to pursue a career not of their willing but later on managed to go for what they are passionate about and ended up being successful.  It also tackles how some school and college professor place too much pressure on students and emphasize ranks instead of love for learning.
