I.                    Introduction

When I learned that my next subject for Ateneo Clark was Leadership, I was very excited. I have always wanted to learn more about leadership concepts. One of the reasons I took MBA was to hone my skills in management and leadership. When I received the book "Heroic Leadership", I thought in the beginning that the book was quite small and maybe the subject would be easy - I was wrong. The book may look small and thin, but the content is rich. Every chapter has invaluable insights on authentic leadership. There was so much that I did not know or understand about Heroic Leadership and Authentic Leadership. And after reading all the posts and blogs, I realized I have a long way to go before I can fully call myself an Authentic Leader. In addition, the materials and sources were relevant and we were blessed to have a professor who pushes us to bring out the best and is persistent in teaching us a lot with only 8 weeks as a timeline.

II.                  Leadership Concepts, Discussions and Lessons

Before the class officially started, we were required to read in advance so that we would have a background for the class discussions. I always believe it important to be prepared for upcoming classes. As a leader we must be equipped when we go into battle - we call it "boy scout or girl scout attitude." I read the posts on the Ateneo Leadership Blog, Heroic Leadership, Heart of Danger, the Story of Rudy Espina, Traditional View of Leadership, Components of Leadership, Hope for the Flowers and more.

Our intro song after the prayers last Friday was "Heal the World" by Michael Jackson. The message is loud and clear, as St. Ignatius would say, to make this world a better world. Not that we have doctors here in the class, the real healers; but there are other things we can heal as leaders. Go on and answer the call. The message of the song resonates with your paper on passion. And your AVPs... Thank you class of leaders as become more engaged healers of the world. Thanks Leader Anne for selecting this song. We all have barriers, let us break this Wall

Answer the Leadership Call

Answer for the peace of our Soul.

We all want to soar high like a Mighty Eagle

Listen to your heart and it will Tell

Look in the Mirror,  what do you see is Real

Lord God our paths need you're Light

Leaders do not be lost and be out of Sight

There is hope, Together there is Might.

Truth is, we need each other's strength

Connect our hearts, stretch and bent

God put us together, it is meant

Our time has come to finally shine

The Learning Agreement we all sign

Remember to fulfill because it will bind

To change, To Serve, To Lead and not to be Blind

Authentic, Heroic, Ingenuity, Love, Service and importantly be Kind.

This should all be in our Heart and Mind

Reflection # 3

What is your passion (What is it that you love doing?  How is it reflected in your work, daily life, and life's journey).

The AVP that I presented last Friday showed a glimpse of my passion in life. It was a quick view of the things I love the most. My reflection paper will explain, in detail, why I am passionate about my family, education, children, nature and adventure, traveling and helping others.

I am passionate about my family

My family taught me to live a simple life. Contentment is the key to living simple. We have to be thankful every day for what life gives us. Growing up, we had a very small house, but the love inside was huge. My parents started from scratch, we moved from one apartment to another. I never had a problem with this because every apartment that we moved to, mom and dad brought love in our luggage. In all the stories I've shared, my dad was revered by people around him. He naturally radiated love to everyone around him - and people returned the love. There was no bad seed in him. Man by nature is a rational being; therefore he is a thinking man. We must understand first the reason for his actions before we start judging.

My youngest brother married very young, and he did not finish high school. My brother is sweet and Maasikaso, but he doesn't have a goal in life. He depended on us for many things. When I worked abroad I was sending him allowance. I was in the Caribbean when he became a father. I was the happiest Aunt because I love children. He gave me the honor to name the 3 children: Yya, Yko and Yian.

Thanks to the able leadership of the following Clash Master:   Dr Suzette Kabigting Munoz, Dr. Lourdes Lagunilla, Tristan Val Leonida, Belle Katigbak and Anne Mayette Boysie, we had fun filled, learning, and challenge filled experience from Team Building Exercise at Clear Water.

These were my recollection of the events yesterday:

1.  Leader Dr. Suzette, using the F150 of RCEE fetched this author from the hotel towards Clear Water team building venue.  When we arrived at the site, most of the Leaders were there.  Many winners for early bird.

2. The first activity which started at 4:30 was the prayer dance of St. Ignatius de Loyola.  It was led by Leader Sister Belle Katigbak.   The prayer dance was challenging because you have to do a line dance while holding a fellow leader at the shoulder and holding a lighted candle at the other hand (left).  You worry about stepping on the foot of the fellow leader, being out of step and the candle burning your hand and/or fellow leader. It was school holiday yesterday, but we had a class anyway so as not to disrupt the academic calendar.  (One class coincided with the Ramadan, with the Feast of St Ignatius, and on the 21st, the birthday of Ninoy.

3.  Then we had the usual speeches:   Leader Dr. Munoz delivering the opening remarks, I delivering the inspirational talk, and Leader Tristan giving the overview of the team building and the rules.  Then we organized the teams.  Yellow, blue and ube. I joined the yellow team who had Leader Zel, Maui, Steph, Gage, Dr. George, Dr Alan, and Oliver as other members.

4.  The activities:

    1.  The first activity was cheerleading.  Dr. Zel coached us with the "We are  we are, yellow submarine, and then "Boom Panes"  Boom boom panes The other distinctive cheer was Ube led by Leader Josh

   2. Then we had the straw tower building contest.   Blue was the winner at 9 straws, followed by yellow, with 8.5 straws.  Blue had just a pole shape tower,  Yellow had a tower patterned after Eiffel Tower, with four base and column support.  Ube had a square structure.

  3. We had the rabbit, hunter wall.  After a series of ties, the group led by Leader Dr Zel, and commanded by Ronnie on what to do, won by a single win over the other group.

  4.  Other activities:

       1.  Together we rise up and stand from a arms interlocked sitting position.  Blue won this.  Yellow could have won were it not for infraction of loosening arm lock  Yellow lost this because there were only six and there were not enough force to get people up.  Not much strength from the back

      2.   The hula hoop challenge -  the hula hoop would have to be passed on the next team member out and back and the final guy to get the hula hoop would run in front and do a jumping hula.  Again we lost this one.

     3.  The obstacle course.  It was dark, and despite the availability of flood light, the Safety Officer Dr. Daisy recommended that this be scuttled because there were many mosquitoes and there could be dengue infection

                                  It is not all about competition, it could be co opetition

                              Let us have the most number of balls possible -  81!

    4.  The collaboration game -  who gets the most number of balls, It was first a competitive situation where leaders get as many balls from the center and from each other.  It was both offense and defensive game. If you do not watch your own circle. the other members looted your circle.   Until Maui convinced others that we just put our hoops at the middle to get the most number of balls.

3.   How do they prepare you for your future challenges?

Experience is the best teacher. My life experiences and defining moments have taught me, challenged me and changed me. The exercises we've done for the past few weeks have helped me understand myself deeper.  I have learned in this class that the journey for authentic leadership requires a lot of inner assessment and reflection. I previously viewed a leader as merely someone who knows how to inspire, manage, lead and have followers. I admit that I am very wrong with this perception because there is a much deeper understanding towards becoming an Authentic Leader. A lot of people can be leaders, but few can be authentic. This course is helping me track my path to Authentic Leadership. The 1^st journey is to be SELF AWARE. Now I asked myself, am I on the right path to authentic leadership? Or am I a long way ahead? Or I maybe I'm on the wrong path? The questions in this reflection will help me answer this question

EXTERNAL (Family, Environment School and Work Experiences)

Family

Recalling when I was very young, I was afraid to go out and play with other kids because I only wanted to be around my parents. Then I was introduced to fun childhood games and adventures such as climbing trees, swimming in the river, or running in the street and playing all day. From being fearful at first, I could no longer be stopped from exploring outside my comfort zone. Change had happened to me, and I liked it. My mom said that I cried so hard on my first day of school, and for the second time I feared the new changes. Looking back, I can say that change is actually good. Because of change, I learned to be independent, socialize, and to share. My life was evolving so fast that everything seemed different. My Dad knew that change was inevitable and set out to guide me before society could corrupt my morals and values. My dad regularly reminded us that we could play as much as we wanted and enjoy our childhood, but must be home for 'family time' – also known as 'meal-time.' During meal-time we were all required to stand for the grace. Praying was something that my dad instilled in all of us. We had to be sincere with our prayers, and not just utter the words - but feel it in our hearts. Standing is a sign of respect, and when praying, you show respect. Although I had been learning from society, it was the values and morals my parents introduced in my growing years that I valued and remembered the most. I was very lucky to have a dad with strong moral convictions concerning life and spirituality, and a mom that is hardworking and tough. He always told us that it takes a heart to love and to understand. When there is in heart what you do or what you say, there is a lot of love and understanding to it. Like everyone, we are not a perfect family. We had shortcomings and arguments, but my dad kept glued us together. He used faith and love as our main foundation. We disagreed, but we had to talk it out using our hearts. It doesn't matter who is right or wrong, but what matters is what is inside our hearts.

Grandfather – Jose Beltran Vitug

My grandfather "Apo Pepe" is the youngest amongst his siblings. His family is originally from Lubao and moved to Porac where he met and married my grandmother. He was a teacher and became the District Supervisor of several towns in Pampanga. He was also a US Military Veteran and they moved back and forth to the US in the 90's. He had a temper and he was feared when he gets angry. Now at 93 years old, he still has one of the sharpest memories I have ever known. He valued education so much and believe in the importance of having a diploma. He was able to send one of his brothers and my grandma to school. He would boast to us, "I sent your grandma to school."  Apo is also a disciplinarian; he is very strict with himself and his children. My grandfather is a survivor in every definition. What do I mean by survivor?  He survived death 5 times in his lifetime and he can still vividly tell you his story.  Last night, July 20, 2015 at 6pm I asked him to retell me his story so that I could share it with you all on my Genogram:
