Re: Cebu Regis Leader Reflection Paper #2 - Internal and External Factors that Shaped me by Leader Ivy Eleanor U Ko

Hi Prof,

Resending my revised reflection paper #2
Thank you for the opportunity to revise.

Have a great weekend!

Cebu Regis Leader Reflection Paper #2 -  Internal and External Factors that Shaped me by Leader Ivy Eleanor U Ko

External - what are family, environment, school and work experience that shaped you today?

I am the second among 4 female siblings. You can imagine how we make Papa's world go round with 5 ladies (6 if you include my Ama) at home. The house is never boring with 4 active and inquisitive daughters who share similar topics of interests. The four of us siblings share almost everything, from books to clothes to even friends which made my social circle very big! Since papa was always on travel, we don't have a male companion at home, so the 4 of us siblings learned to be each other's sense of security and independent at a young age. This made our bond very solid, that we know we have each other's back on times of need.
There is an unspoken agreement that if we grow up and have our respective families, we know we can depend on each other to take care of our kids.

While growing up, I am closest to my Eldest sister, who I call Atsi. She wants to be the "leader" in almost everything. She has experienced most activities ahead of us being the first one to start almost everything. I enjoy listening to her teaching and sharing with us her learnings and adventures. So almost always, family occasions were never boring as we have each other to keep us company. We never ran out of things to do or topics to discuss. When she got married and went to live in Sydney and started her own family, the family dynamics she left certainly changed as our "leader" has transferred base. Missing one sibling was a new feeling for all of us, as everyone grew up together in Cebu. There were opportunities that were offered for me to join her in Sydney, so I can try living outside the comforts of home, but I ignored all these as I prefer to stay with Papa and Mama, enjoyed my work and I have my social network in Cebu. Having travelled for work, I always look forward to going home, so I know living away from home is something I would not enjoy for long.

Another person who has anchored me to base is Ama. I've remember seeing her enjoy simple things in life. She loves to cook and keep the house spic and span. She is very close to her children whom she calls almost everyday to check on how they and their family are. She is very caring, and never forgets the birthdays of her grandchildren. She is generous, yet very strict. For her, you have to be home before meal times, and take your responsibility of a parent seriously. You must walk the talk and lead by example. I feel very lucky to have grown up in the same house as her and saw the sides of her that none of my cousins saw. I could say I got some values and traits from her, especially my sense of responsibility.

At work, I grew the wings I never knew I had before. Being financially independent enabled me to be more generous with myself, buy and enjoy the things that I want without being too budget conscious. I got to travel, see and explore the world. Experiencing to lead and manage a team taught me to plan, to organize, to lead, to communicate, and to motivate.  Planning, Organizing, and Communicating is very important to be able to convey to the team the organizational expectations and relay to them how the team is faring. Are we near our target? What did we do right or wrong? How do we correct ourselves and achieve our goal? I also learned that there is no one size fits all approach in managing an employee, most especially the high potential ones. Feedback is very important. Being a friend, and finding a good friend at work is vital.

Being sent on trips for work has been a blessing. Yes, it is difficult to be travelling all the time, but as long as you still enjoy it, you will learn a lot from it. You will also get to have more things done rather than just following things up with your counterpart on email or videoconferences. I got to experience all types of travel, be it land, sea, or air. Sometimes, when I get lucky, I get to have the same trip arrangements with the boss. Yes, it is sometimes stressful to travel with the boss, but the benefits further outweighs the costs. You get to have first class treatment, you observe and learn the way they travel, your get to see the other side of them. These are the things not everyone has the chance to do. Of course, it's not all the time you talk about work, but you also share stories on personal lives. I got to learn a lot of stuffs on how to succeed in life from my former bosses during the numerous travels we've done together.

Now that I am on my own, and do consultancy with SME's, I have encountered different personalities and their different approaches on how business owners manage their business and handle their people. This is a new experience for me as I have been used to dealing with higher level management, but with this time, it's more of like multi-tasking for all levels of the organization. Yes, all the skills I've learned in the past is very useful, but this time, EQ, patience and humility is much more needed to get things to work. And yes, because I get to have my own time and my own boss, I am very happy to how things are playing out to be.

These are awesome some experiences I will never forget.

Internal  -  your values, strength, weakness and how do they affect on how you decide act

Values

1. Willingness to help people
Being the type 2 Helper that I am, I always enjoy helping people who asks for assistance. When I train, I am not selfish and I don't keep secrets. I share everything that has made me to where I am today. I always believe that the best measure of success is when you see your team and subordinates succeed in their own fields.  It is my happiness to see people I've trained succeed, and this is something I want to do as long as I can.

2. Integrity
Once I commit to something, I do it with passion. I always search for better ways of doing things, don't accept mediocrity, but constantly challenge status quo.

3. Frugality
At an early age, I saw my mom being very cost conscious in all activities at home, thus she is also very resourceful in ensuring family budget is enough and save for rainy days. I've carried the same principle while growing up, until working and have my own family. I often frown when I see too much lavishness, especially if expenses does not come from their own pocket. I am amazed at how rich business tycoons with the likes of Warren Buffet and John Gokongwei keep a very simple lifestyle despite the wealth they have amassed.

Strengths

1. Competent, and works effectively
I don't mind starting from scratch to be able to get things done. In my opinion, getting the feedback from the ground up is one way to get the accurate information.  I pay equal attention to peers' and superiors' information to be able to get things done. When I need to work on something, I put my full time and attention to it, giving importance every to the minutest detail.

2. Cheerful, approachable, and upbeat
Being friendly and charming enables you to get difficult things done, from getting a parking space in a full car park, obtaining a meeting schedule with the bosses' jam packed calendar from his executive secretary, to surviving traveling alone (and befriending a hunk in the plane who ended to become my husband), and most especially being the youngest member in a tough Archaic ExCom. If you can talk to all levels of the organization, initiatives will be fast tracked, communication and feedback will be more efficient, and of course, you achieve your growth faster.

3. Ability to see the big picture
As much as I can, I keep myself updated, research, read the news, learn what is going on. I enjoy being aware of the general and fundamental information of things. I guess this also comes in complement with the Financial acumen I have learned over the length of my career. It is easy for me to come up with a story out of financial statements, and I enjoy doing detailed analysis as the need arises.

To Professor Jorge, and leader classmates, Fellow Parents and Soon to be parents. , Good Morning

Have you ever heard of the Milk Code?

Yes, there is a Philippine law on milk. Breast milk in particular. The Milk Code or Executive Order 51, signed by then president Corazon Aquino was implemented in 1986 (the first in asia), is the law that protects and promotes breastfeeding in the Philippines. It regulates the industry of formula milk and other milk products that there should be no form of advertising or promotion of milk formula to the public and medical authorities are expected to play a part in the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding in the country.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), the Philippines is one of the 37 countries that fully implemented this milk code, Ironically, after almost 29 years, surveys show that Filipino mothers have yet to fully grasp the benefits of feeding their infants exclusively with their breast milk. Only 34% of infants under 6 months are breastfed. Most mothers still opt to use milk formulas for various reasons such as alleged inability to produce breast milk and time constraints. Although an improvement from 2011's 27%, these findings still put the country with lowest percentage of breastfed babies.

Photo ops of the Leadership Class and the Cebu AGSB SC

The last part of team building last December 12, 2015,   After watching the Chicken A la Carte, a short Indie film that won at Cannes, the leaders were asked to write a commitment on what they can do about this lack of access to the bounty of this earth by many (nearly 50% of the world and country's population.  Many are limited by their attitude - timidity, lack of ambition, fear, lethargy (or laziness) but this is real problem we must face.  Many about 10,000 a day die because of hunger because we waste food.

I happened to meet a German fraulein at the gym of the hotel where I was staying.  I learned that she was on R & R from Borongan Samar.  She works for Caritas an organization that has been in the Philippines for the last two years taking care of Yolanda victims at Borongan.  We should admire these volunteers and workers for being interested in the plight of our brethren who are less fortunate, or who were ravaged by the typhoon.  How about us?  Some take advantage of the situation to earn more for them or we simply do not care.

This post had a lengthy conversation with leader Dovie who is running a 300 bed hospital,  I campaigned to her to help keep costs of health care low, as was expressed by Dr. Kerwin Mark Gubantes on the first day of class.  The take over by multibillion companies of several  well known hospitals has caused the cost of health care to skyrocket.  It is all about profit now and when will it end and increasingly, the very high costs of hospitalization may bankrupt Philhealth, burn holdes in the pockets of many.  The masses can ill afford health care and may not even see a doctor in their lifetime (a herbalist maybe)  Thus I labor with this site:   Cheapcures that focus on preventive medicine other lower cost health strategies.  I am but one who is campaigning for this   As leader Bryan had said, take baby steps towards your goal.

To Professor Jorge, and leader classmates, Fellow Parents and Soon to be parents. , Good Afternoon

Most mothers opt to use milk formulas for various reasons such as alleged inability to produce breast milk and time constraints. Although an improvement from 2011's 27%, these findings still put the country with lowest percentage of breastfed babies.

We have very weak implementation, due to the strength these formula milk companies over the governing authorities and medical practitioners. Sad to say, a lot of medical practicioners are still staunch supporters of formula milks, and this is a very sad reality why breastfeeding in the country not garnered strength.  Advertisements of breast milk substitutes in the Philippines amounted to more than $100 million in 2006. These ads often give misinformed claims and false promises regarding milk formulas at the expense of the child's health.  According to Dr Anthony Calibo of the Family Health Office of DOH, only a few milk companies abide by the Milk Code but the violations often go unreported due to lack of awareness. LACK OF AWARENESS???? That EMPHASIZES the is the strength of marketing and advertising of these heavily funded formula milk companies, and the PATHETIC and the INDIFFERENT  attempts of the regulatory agencies in the country to put this effort into reality.

BUT THERE IS SOMETHING WE CAN DO. A lot of civic organizations have stood up and formed support groups to create awareness to women. I was lucky that I got pregnant during a time when breastfeeding had made a comeback with a lot of support groups all around Cebu – be it in social media, research topics, or even well informed OB Gyne, Pediatrician and hospitals.  While I was into my pregnancy, I was introduced into the LATCH advocate group, and attended their meetings and free seminars that before I gave birth, I already hyped myself that I will be exclusively breastfeeding my baby at a minimum of 1 year. DOH now has the Unang Yakap program, whereby baby is immediately placed on your chest as soon as he comes out to start his breastfeeding. That first hour of sucking was one of the most precious memories for me. YES! I'M A MOM! You tend to forget all the pains and tiredness you have gone thru the past 9 months seeing your  baby greedily sucking for that first meal of Colostrum.

For those that are not familiar, Colostrum is the first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth, rich in antibodies should be baby's first meal ever. This special milk is yellow to orange in color and thick and sticky. It is low in fat, and high in carbohydrates, protein, and antibodies to help keep your baby healthy by destroy disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Colostrum has an especially important role to play in the baby's gastrointestinal tract. It seals the holes by "painting" the gastrointestinal tract with a barrier which mostly prevents foreign substances from penetrating and possibly sensitizing a baby to foods the mother has eaten. The colostrum gradually changes to mature milk during the first two weeks after birth. During this transition, the concentrations of the antibodies in your milk decrease, but your milk volume greatly increases. Not even water should be given, because breastmilk, during those very important first 6 months of life, is perfect. After six months, you can start solid food but the important point is that breastfeeding itself needs to be continued, if the mother is able to.

In my 18 months journey with breastfeeding, I could really see the wonders of this liquid gold. Aside from the economical savings it generates, I can see my baby is generally healthy, rarely prone to common cough and colds, very easy to manage and listens to mommy.  Breastfeeding is not about the size of the mammary glands, but the passion and determination of the mother to produce and to feed. Of course, mom has to eat healthy, drink water, rest as you are sharing your food to your infant. Though some women ultimately are not able to breastfeed, many who think they cannot actually are able to breastfeed. There are several lactation groups that provide support to women learning to breastfeed.  For those who are not able to breastfeed, milk banks or donor milk may be an alternative.

In fact, I was able to help one baby named Sam, whose mom died while giving birth, the baby a lot of complications that he had to stay in the hospital for 5 months, and for him to survive, he should be fed with breastmilk. His aunt, who is luckily in the medical field, was able to ask help from mothers who had extra breastmilk to spare. You would imagine his aunt bringing a cooler all around Cebu everyday in case she would receive milk from donors. I am very proud to say Klive has been sharing his milk with baby Sam until he turned one, and Sam today is a healthy 18 month baby boy, thru the courtesy of the various mommies in Cebu who has helped him since day 1.

My advocacy has always been share, pay it forward. The Lord has been very good to me, and my best way to give praise and gratitude is to share it to those in need. That is why I am in front of you leaders today. What is important is to properly educate those directly involved in a child's life on the benefits of breastfeeding early on. All over the Philippines, we have LATCH, Breastfeeding Philippines, La Leche League (Philippines), etc. Aside from that, you can draw support from your officemates, your family, your friends. Myself. Believe me, the help will come, once you want to do it for yourself. And fellow leaders, I am offering myself, if in case you know anyone who needs breastfeeding assistance, I am at their service. You know how to contact me. I will be very happy to help and share my notes, as these have been in service for 18 months and counting….

Thank You and good afternoon.

Regis Cebu Leadership Movie Synopsis, Analysis of JCampbelll Monomyth and My Life Story by Leader Ivy Eleanor Ko

Regis Cebu Leadership Movie Synopsis, Analysis of JCampbelll Monomyth and My Life Story by Leader Ivy Eleanor Ko

 Synopsis of Movie The Lady
The Lady, a movie created in Year 2011 movie starring Michelle Yeoh and David Thelwis is my selected film for my paper. This movie is the love story of Burma's Peace Prize Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and husband Michael Aris. It is also the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma's democracy movement. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, their love endures until the very end. Like Joseph Palmer's "Hero with a thousand faces" who travels in 12 stages, Aung San Suu Kyi also had her own series of adventures.

The Hero is introduced in his ordinary world
Aung San Suu Kyi was born June 19, 1945 in Rangoon, Burma to General Aung San and Daw Khin. The general was one of the 'Thirty Comrades' who spearheaded the Japanese advance into British Burma, before turning against the Japanese and founded the modern Burmese army and negotiated Burma's independence from the British Empire in 1947; he was assassinated by his rivals in the same year.
