'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)
Yesterday, we had a graded recitation. The list of articles to be read and discussed by the Leaders were previously sent and they were archived systematically for easy location.
Some of the important points that came out:
1. On Heneral Luna:
1. He could have done better were it not for the fact that he looked too harsh. He could have been the great general who would have saved our country; His inability to connect and engage with his people led to his untimely demise. He could have balanced his use of power and empathy/compassion. Thus iron fist and velvet gloves approach. Himas tadyak ika nga ng matatanda.
2. While he had character (discipline) and competence (scientist, writer, soldier, general) he forgot one aspect of power - legality, that of being with the blessing in the organization. We should bear in mind that the President and his cabinet made sure they were in power (first with the rigged election) the elimination of adversary like Bonifacio
Leadership subject at AGSB is an Ateneo advantage. It emphasizes leadership from within, authentic leadership. One of its pillars is love. This is odd in a cold steely corporate world. The others are heroism, ingenuity and self awareness. The goal of leadership is not only to develop oneself but to clone other leaders. Everybody has potential to be leader. What we do, even if we do not have followers influences/affects others. It is time to define Filipino leadership too

Graduation Reflection Speech by MBA Class 2015 Class Valedictorian Dr. Cristine Denise C. de los Reyes
'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)
Graduation speech of Dra. Cristine Denise C de los Santos
This post takes the liberty of reposting the valedictory speech of the said doctor, why we previously said her speech was a review of the Leadership Class, ie, Ignatian Leadership Chris Lowney. Please see for yourself if indeed it was a recasting, review of this Class. That it was her favorite subject, is something we Lecturer aspire to achieve - to make our subjects FAVS of students/graduates. Is this class a FAV subject?

Many of our leaders mentioned in the Learning Agreement that they wanted to know more about the subject matter, as one of their objectives in enrolling in this course. They are challenging tasks, and can be learned on a day to day basis as we go on leadership journey. How we wish we had crystal balls to predict what the future will be and to decide amidst chaos. They say that all strategies (decision) melt in the heat of battle. Even in the military where the lieutenants are supposed to follow strictly orders, they are trained to think for themselves in the ever changing battle situation. Increasingly we have to rely on the ability of leaders and their followers to learn to think and do for themselves when left alone.

In decision making, I was reminded of the constant phone calls made by my father (when he was still alive) to me and he did this daily, and I was sort of sometimes irritated because I had a feeling of self righteousness. I was then mature, had an MBA and who was he to to advise me on so many things. When he died, I missed his phone calls, and his talk. That is the big question: when your elders are gone, how will you decide? Where will get your strength and wisdom? That is the big question. I wish this this class, this post can give you the answer. But you must search for this, as each situation the persons around us are unique.

Reflection Paper 2 by Leader Oliver Pabillon
Reflection Paper 2 by Leader Oliver Pabillon
"Thou art the Potter, I am the clay." Jeremiah 18
I am not born in a family of great leaders (i.e. traditional leaders as do politicians, emperors, kings, war heroes, and business tycoons) but I am made to be one. As the saying goes…the warrior does not win inside the ring, he is only recognized there. All of us are warriors but not all make it to stand and fight inside the ring. All of us are leaders but not all become great, efficient and effective. I am being made as a leader through self-awareness, learning, observation and even through failures. As the clay to a potter, I am being molded by life's experiences – family, environment, school and work.
Family and environment
Life in the barrio (Bancal in the town of Guagua) where I grew up with was nothing extraordinary during my time. My grandparent's house was built along the river coastline just like the other fisher folk around the area. The Guagua River "Ilog Hua-hua/Wawa" meaning river mouth or "bukana" played an important role in the trade and transportation during the 18th and 19th century. The navigable river by which the town of Guagua was gifted, aside from the rich species of freshwater fish, allowed boats to transport commodities to and from other places, particularly in Manila where it connects through Manila Bay. People made a living out of the bounties of the river. Fishing was basically passed on from one generation to the next, including my father. My grandfather told me that during the decades of 1970s and 1980s when the resources from the river became scarce. Probably it was due to over fishing or due to industrial development of nearby towns including the booming industries in Manila. Because of this, some people migrated to nearby towns. Some resorted to farming, tailoring, woodcraft and construction. In 1991, the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, was a further challenge. The river dried up because of the lahar flow. Flooding plagues the town during the rainy seasons. Since then, economic activities of the people were hampered due to these uncertainties. But the ever resilient people of Guagua, under the leadership of Mayor Santiago, as one man, proved once again that they could not be trampled by whatever adversity they come across.
