The graded recitation led to more conversation and reflection on leadership

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Yesterday, we had a graded recitation.  The list of articles to be read and discussed by the Leaders were previously sent and they were archived systematically for easy location.

Some of the important points that came out:

1.   On Heneral Luna:

    1. He could have done better were it not for the fact that he looked too harsh.  He could have been the great general who would have saved our country;  His inability to connect and engage with his people led to his untimely demise.  He could have balanced his use of power and empathy/compassion. Thus iron fist and velvet gloves approach.  Himas tadyak ika nga ng matatanda.

   2.  While he had character (discipline) and competence (scientist, writer, soldier, general) he forgot one aspect of power  -  legality, that of being with the blessing in the organization.   We should bear in mind that the President and his cabinet made sure they were in power (first with the rigged election) the elimination of adversary like Bonifacio

2. On Ninoy:

    1.  You could be a hero and leader even when you are gone.  It is absurd but it happened with Ninoy

   2.  Ninoy is best remembered not for being a senator or other things, but he made it possible to end the FM dictatorship.

3. Others:

    1.  What can we say about Leaders who direct the fate of our country while living in nice places and in comfort in foreign lands?

    2.  Are OFWs who send money to their children here and families heroes/leader?

   3. Should we just stay with our loved ones rather than leaving the country and having social dislocation  Leader Mel was very emphatic about this, that we may seek greater pastures abroad, but bring the family along.

   4. Yesterday's hero tomorrow's villain.   Who judges leaders?  History and the situation.

   5. We need deeper understanding of Socrates and Buddha

These questions call for very deep and thoughtful reflection.

We were able to achieve two things last night:   finding out who are keeping with their readings and leveling up our understanding of leadership

The professor wishes that the recitation would not need reading computer or posts, and thus encourages more insightful talks on leadership topics which we have read and understood.
