Decision Making, Critical Analytical Thinking, and Conflict Resolution

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

AGSB Clark,
August 13, 2015

Many of our leaders mentioned in the Learning Agreement that they wanted to know more about the subject matter, as one of their objectives in enrolling in this course.  They are challenging tasks, and can be learned on a day to day basis as we go on leadership journey.  How we wish we had crystal balls to predict what the future will be and to decide amidst chaos.  They say that all strategies (decision) melt in the heat of battle.  Even in the military where the lieutenants are supposed to follow strictly orders, they are trained to think for themselves in the ever changing battle situation.  Increasingly we have to rely on the ability of leaders and their followers to learn to think and do for themselves when left alone.

In decision making, I was reminded of the constant phone calls made by my father (when he was still alive) to me and he did this daily, and I was sort of sometimes irritated because I had a feeling of self righteousness.  I was then mature, had an MBA and who was he to to advise me on so many things.  When he died, I missed his phone calls, and his talk.  That is the big question:  when your elders are gone, how will you decide?  Where will get your strength and wisdom?  That is the big question. I wish this this class, this post can give you the answer.  But you must search for this, as each situation the persons around us are unique.

Life of Power and Wealth may draw you unwittingly to the Left

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

This Lecturer thanks the class and the groups for enthusiastically presenting the Left side the life crime and wickedness in this  world.  We may be born good, as some politicians are , policemen, public servants, servants of the Lord, common citizens.  eventually are drawn into the life of crime and crookedness.  Yes power and wealth corrupt and they corrupt absolutely. As people rise to the top they assume great power that sometimes they think are equal or more than God;  and so they only decide what is right is wrong (or left)

We have to be consciously aware of that as we act and make our decisions.  The Jesuits whose mission is to save souls, keep on repeating that our ultimate purpose is life is to live in the loving presence of the Lord.  Many, of you as per your stories live that kind of life, (like practically giving away your properties to build your church, and take tithing seriously

How nice would it be if everyone would consider the Jesuit value proposition of leadership.  To be profit oriented, yes in the service of life creature.  To be the most powerful man in the country, province, yes to be a Leader serving Gods creation.  But how many are just doing that

There are many pressing world's problems, but what are we thinking of as we pursue our daily lives and ambition. And what are our priorities:

This Lecturer does not wish to pontificate any further because I think the group work yesterday maybe  reminded that us that we can drift into that kind of life and leadership.

The Lecturer thanks the talented script writers, directors, actors and actresses and creative people who made last night fun.  Please keep these presentations private and secure.  Especially the SPG romantic scene (the bed scene)

Ignatian/Jesuit Leadership

What is Ignatian/Jesuit Leadership all about.

(From Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney)

The conventional wisdom about leadership are:

(by Harvard Business Professor John Kotter:

1.  Establishing direction
2.  Aligning people through communication
3.  Motivating and inspiring
4.  Achieving results or change.
     May I add success

But what Ignatian leadership teaches are the following concepts (which are Jesuitical) if not contrary to the common Leadership wisdom

1.  We are all leaders and we may be doing it poorly or well;

2.  Leadership springs from what you do and who you are (it wells from within)

3.  It is not an act (a a one shot deal) but it is a way of life ( pp 1 to 15 Heroic Leadership4.  It is an on going process;  we can never be a perfect or complete leader (nor a hero or patriot

4. It is an ongoing process.  We are never a complete perfect leader, hero or patriot.  We are all journeying to become better leaders.
