Regis Cebu Leadership Final Integrative Paper – by Leader Juvelon Abante

Introduction:

I was asked during the first day of the leadership class on what kind of leader I want to be. I answered I want to be a transformational leader just like Steve Jobs. This is my immediate answer because I have read so many articles about Steve Jobs and I told myself that I want to follow his leadership style. But these made me change my perspective on leadership for the past 8 weeks that  I am taking this class. I realize that I should stop being Steve Jobs and be just Myself.  I should focus on my strengths and work on my weaknesses just as Self awareness is the first key to discovering my journey to servant leadership. The Four Key Leadership Principle for this subject is about self awareness, ingenuity, heroism and love. These are the most essential traits that every leader should possessed and to be taught on the next generation of servant leaders.

I.             Where Am I Now?

My submitted papers and class activities have help me to answer the question by reflecting on my life's journey to where I am now.

1.    Enneagram
Shown below is the summary of my enneagram result showing the most and least points I got on the different personality type.
Type
Score
Reflection

1 – Orderliness

Type 1 – 1pts
This is where I got a lowest point because a lot of times I don't focus on the instructions but rather on how people will execute. I am not the type of person to strictly implement instructions but hear other's opinion before execution.

2 – Helpfulness

Type 2 – 7pts
This is my highest score among all types because this holds true that I am "The Helper".  Most of the time I value others feelings and based my act on decisions not only according to myself.

3 – Image Focus

Type 3 – 5pts
Because I am a people person, there is a tendency that I always think of others perspective on me. I always try to focus on being a people with Integrity so that people would not lose trust on me as I lead them.

Learning Reflection:  The results just confirms on how I know well my personality.  Being the helper really reflects my attitude towards other people. Self awareness plays a vital role here to know my strengths. I will work on my lowest point and improve them so that I could use that as my learning points as I work on my weaknesses.

Regis Cebu Leadership Reflection Paper 3 – “My Passion” by Leader Juvelon Abante

Regis Cebu Leadership Reflection Paper 3 – My Passion by Leader Juvelon Abante

What is your passion (What is it that you love doing)?
At first I have difficulty in defining my passion. Over the past years, I have struggle in answering this question because I do not know the answer, I do not know my passion yet at that time but just recently when I did my reflections and attending this leadership subject, I now realize what is really my passion.  My passion is to train and mentor people. I always have the interest whenever I am tap to facilitate training in the office or create a training course for the new hired engineers in our company. My work requires full time supervision on the schedule execution of the project but if my Manager or the HR Talent Development asks me to facilitate a training course then by all means I agree to take the responsibility knowing that I am contributing to the knowledge bank of the engineers on their journey to success in our company.

During my childhood days, I am the one helping my younger sister then in her school assignments even when she is already in her college most especially if it is about Math subjects because I have the advantage as I am graduate of Electronics Engineer. Also when I was a kid, I have attended a DBVS (Daily Vacation Bible School) in the church just in front of our house. When I graduated from this summer activity, I volunteered to teach on the next summer to pay it forward as I learn the bible. These become my summer activity with my sister since our parents are both working abroad and we need an activity to keeps us busy while my parents are not around. When I was in high school, I have attended a cell group, a bible study group every Friday. I eventually became the cell leader of the group, and I have invited my high school friends in this group. Instead of going to the mall or have a drinking session, we are spending our Friday night studying the word of God and I am blessed that I am able to lead and teach my high school buddies the bible and eventually this high school cell group became my closest friend until now.

Now that I am equipped with the heroic leadership mindset, I want to influence people with the same mindset. Aside from being passionate in training my people in the company, in the future I also want to be a motivational speaker in leadership.

Regis Cebu Leadership Genogram – “My Family Tree” by Leader Juvelon Abante

Regis Cebu Leadership Genogram – "My Family Tree" by Leader Juvelon Abante
I.             My Family Tree
A.   Father Side (Grandparents)

My Grandfather from my Father Side originally comes from Mindoro Province. According to my relatives, most of the Abante Clan originated from Mindoro then eventually have transferred to Bauan Batangas.
i)                    Lolo Durungao – I am not familiar with the real name of my Lolo's Brother, but as I recall it right I call him Lolo Durungao because he is from Durungao, Batangas. I often see him when we are visiting Batangas during the Christmas Holiday Season. According to my Father, he is a businessman and of public service.
ii)                  Teodulo Abante (My Dad's Father) – My Lolo Dolo as they call him is a graduate of commerce. He died when I was just 2 years old that is why I don't have memories to recall for my Lolo. But according to my Lola, Lolo Dolo is very strict when it comes to parenting. This is where my Father inherits his style of parenting to us.
i)        Concepcion Abante (My Dad's Mother) – My Lola Asyon as they fondly called him is still alive at the age of 85 as of this writing. I have a lot of good memories with my Grandmother because she is the one who takes care of us whenever we visit Batangas during our childhood. Lola Asyon is very religious and a devoted catholic, she always reminds us to attend masses. When I was a kid, my Lola always brings me to the "Flores de Mayo" during the month of May. We were assigned to lead the celebration in the church.
ii)      Lola Belen – Lola Belen is the sister of Lola Asyon. The first time I met Lola Belen when I was in 8 years old. I remember that during this first meeting, she invited me to a lunch on their house because she will cook tinolang manok. I also see that my Lola Belen is close to my Father Rusty. My Dad will always visit Lola Belen whenever we had a time to have a vacation in Batangas.

B.   Mother Side (Grandparents)
My Grandparents from my mother side can trace its roots on Dumaguete and Mabinay, Negros Oriental. My Lolo Ben is from Mabinay while my Lola Puring is from Dumaguete.
i)                    Benjamin Diones (My Mom's Father) – My Grandfather Lolo Ben is a graduate of Education from Siliman University. Just like my Lolo Dolo, he also died while I was still a kid. I think I just turn 1 year old when my Lolo Ben dies. According to my Mom, he dies because of Lung Cancer. He was a heavy smoker and drinker. He is a Teacher and School Prinicipal in Mabinay Elementary School.
ii)                  Lolo Toting – Lolo Toting graduated as a lawyer in Foundation University in Dumaguete. As I remember him, he was like a Politician whenever I see him speaks during our gathering. According to my Mom, he inherits these from my Great Grandparent who is formerly a mayor of Mabinay.
iii)                Lolo Lording – Lolo lording is a graduate of Siliman University as a Laboratory Technician. I did not have a chance to meet Lolo Lording before he dies because they are living in Australia.
i)                    Purificacion Adanza (My Mom's Mother) – Lola Puring is also a teacher just like my Lolo Ben. She is a school teacher in Zamboanguita Negros Oriental. As I recall my childhood memories, my Lola Puring host us whenever we visit Negros during summer vacation.  Lola Puring becomes the immediate guardian of 2 of my cousins because my Aunt died when my cousin was still a kid. My Lola puring died of heart failure last 2010.
ii)                  Exequiel Adanza – Captain Adanza as most of his colleagues call him is a graduate of PMMA. He serves as a Navy after graduation at Sangley Point Naval Base in Cavite. He eventually transfers to private as a seaman and became captain of the ship before he retires.

Leaders Bryan (in Santa attire) and Oliver distribute the gifts

Photo ops of the Leadership Class and the Cebu AGSB SC

The last part of team building last December 12, 2015,   After watching the Chicken A la Carte, a short Indie film that won at Cannes, the leaders were asked to write a commitment on what they can do about this lack of access to the bounty of this earth by many (nearly 50% of the world and country's population.  Many are limited by their attitude - timidity, lack of ambition, fear, lethargy (or laziness) but this is real problem we must face.  Many about 10,000 a day die because of hunger because we waste food.

I happened to meet a German fraulein at the gym of the hotel where I was staying.  I learned that she was on R & R from Borongan Samar.  She works for Caritas an organization that has been in the Philippines for the last two years taking care of Yolanda victims at Borongan.  We should admire these volunteers and workers for being interested in the plight of our brethren who are less fortunate, or who were ravaged by the typhoon.  How about us?  Some take advantage of the situation to earn more for them or we simply do not care.

This post had a lengthy conversation with leader Dovie who is running a 300 bed hospital,  I campaigned to her to help keep costs of health care low, as was expressed by Dr. Kerwin Mark Gubantes on the first day of class.  The take over by multibillion companies of several  well known hospitals has caused the cost of health care to skyrocket.  It is all about profit now and when will it end and increasingly, the very high costs of hospitalization may bankrupt Philhealth, burn holdes in the pockets of many.  The masses can ill afford health care and may not even see a doctor in their lifetime (a herbalist maybe)  Thus I labor with this site:   Cheapcures that focus on preventive medicine other lower cost health strategies.  I am but one who is campaigning for this   As leader Bryan had said, take baby steps towards your goal.

Regis Cebu Leadership Call To Arms Speech – “The Shepherd’s Way” by Leader Juvelon Abante

Regis Cebu Leadership Call To Arms Speech – "The Shepherd's Way" by Leader Juvelon Abante
When we speak of leadership, 2 immediate popular names come into place. Are you Steve Jobs or a Jack Welch? Are you the incremental or the disruptive leader?  Their leadership styles are the most popular role models but for today you will discover the ancient ways of creating a successful leader.  You will learn "The Way of the Shepherd".

In my pursuit of finding my leadership role model that is practically matched with my core strengths, I came across a book that my wife has given me. It is a leadership book entitled "The Way of the Shepherd, 7 Ancient Secrets to Managing Productive People by Kevin Leman and William Pentak".  The learning's from this book become my guiding principle that I am practicing in my work and in my family.

First ,"You need to know the condition of your sheep".  As leader, it is important that you have engagement with your team. You need to establish the connection between your members and you as their leader. Yes, I understand that being the leader means a greater responsibility but we need to remember that the moment you have accepted the leadership role, you should also understand that much of your time is now devoted to people development rather than task oriented. It pays to know your flock and empathy plays a big role in knowing the condition of your members.

Regis Cebu Leadership Reflection Paper 2 – External and Internal Factors That Shaped Me by Leader Juvelon Abante

Regis Cebu Leadership Reflection Paper 2 – External and Internal Factors That Shaped Me by Leader Juvelon Abante
1.      External - what are family, environment, school and work experience that shaped you today?
Family & Environment
I spent my childhood in Bacoor, Cavite.  My Mother left for an opportunity abroad when I was only 2 years old. The following year, my Father also followed my Mom in Saudi Arabia. With both of my parents working abroad, we were left only with our old lady house helper. Sometimes, our Aunt who was living also in the neighborhood will visit us to check if we were ok. We have a sari sari store in our house, this is located just in front  of the Iglesia Ni Cristo church thus I got to know the kids of the INC members and because of that I can access the vicinity of the church and play on the garden area. These INC kids and the kids on the neighborhood became my family.  This is the start where I face responsibility as early as a kid. I knew that I had to be accountable for my sister while my parents are away. It develops my mindset of being protective to my sister and nurture her and act as parent / guardian. As early as childhood, I already learned to watch our sari sari store, buy the groceries needed in a nearby wholesale store. I have learned to cook and prepare our baon. I already know how to ride public transportation such as jeepney or tricycle going to my cousins as early as 6 years old.

Regis Cebu Leadership Movie Synopsis, Analysis of J.Campbelll Monomyth and My Life Story by Leader Juvelon Abante

Regis Cebu Leadership Movie Synopsis, Analysis of J.Campbelll Monomyth and My Life Story by Leader Juvelon Abante
Synopsis of Movie "Facing The Giants"
An action-packed drama about a Christian high school football coach who uses his undying faith to battle the giants of fear and failure.  In six years of coaching, Grant Taylor has never led his Shiloh Eagles to a winning season. After learning that he and his wife Brooke face infertility, Grant discovers that a group of fathers are secretly organizing to have him dismissed as head coach.           Devastated by his circumstances, he cries out to God in desperation. When Grant receives a message from an unexpected visitor, he searches for a stronger purpose for his football team.   He dares to challenge his players to believe God for the impossible on and off the field. When faced with unbelievable odds, the Eagles must step up to their greatest test of strength and courage. What transpires is a dynamic story of the fight between faith and fear.
HERO HAS A THOUSAND FACES OUTLINE

1)           THE HERO IS INTRODUCED IN HIS ORDINARY WORLD
Coach Grant Taylor is a high school football coach of Shiloh Eagles. He is married but with no kids. He dedicate most of his time coaching and planning his football team. For the last six years, his Shiloh Eagle team has not been to the finals or even the playoffs.  The Shiloh Eagles team is one of the worst performing football team in the league.  His players are used to losing and not motivated to winning. The football players are only complying as part of the sports scholarship program.  They are not motivated to win. Losing has been the mindset of the players for the past six years and even Coach Grant Taylor cannot do anything to change his players and turn the tables.
Back at home, when Coach Grant arrives, he usually discuss his problems over his Shiloh Eagle team rather than talk to his wife on things that matter to her such as raising a child because Brooke is already longing to raise a child of her own.

2)           THE CALL TO ADVENTURE
Before the new season starts, his best player transferred to another school because of the parent's decision as they see that school will not bring a future of being a good football player with playing for a losing team. After experiencing 3 straight losses at the start of the new season, a group of fathers from the players including alumni have plan to fire Coach Grant. Coach Grant is surprised by this news because he has dedicated his whole life in coaching and building this team for the past 6 years.
To make the matters worst, they discovered that her wife Brooke has been diagnosed to infertility which makes Brooke depress over the fact that they cannot have their own family.

3)           THE HERO IS RELUCTANT AT FIRST
Face with these challenges at school and with her wife, he almost quit but he comes to God and pray to overcome these challenges.

4)           THE HERO IS ENCOURAGED BY THE WISE OLD MAN OR WOMAN
The following day, he had an unexpected friend. His friend encourages him and motivates him to never give up despite the adversities that he is facing. To dedicate to God everything he do, be it losing or winning. To glorify God at all times and Good things will happen to those who have faith in God.

5)           THE HERO PASSES THE FIRST THRESHOLD
Using his faith to God, he met the team and calls of the daily morning practice instead he delivers a strong message to the team. To dedicate their life to God and have faith in God just as they play their hearts out to God. It was a challenge for Coach Grant to motivate his team because of the losing mindset as players are skeptical if these can be of big help. But with the trust in his team, the team agrees and support Coach Grant.

6)           THE HERO ENCOUNTERS TESTS AND HELPERS
As Coach Grant started to practice in the field, challenging and putting game plans, the plan for his removal from the coaching job is still on its way.

7)           THE HERO REACHES THE INNERMOST CAVE
Using new practice skills from Coach Grant, the players are complaining and don't want to follow the new system being introduced. This is because of the new learning and style and the players are required to communicate to each other more often. These reluctances by the players gave Coach Grant a hard time motivating the team.

8)           THE HERO ENDURES THE SUPREME ORDEAL
Because if this new system, while on practice the players are fighting and brawl has started between players. Even the team captain started the fight and loses his confidence to Coach Grant.

9)           THE HERO SEIZES THE SWORD
But the circumstances of fighting do not remove the faith of Coach Grant to his team. He suddenly call one of his player to do the "Death Crawl". A player will be blindfolded to crawl at least 50 yards but with another player leaning on his back.
All players bet that this can't be done but when Coach Grant encourages the member to never quit as he almost fall down crawling. Surprisingly, the player did not crawl only the required 50 yards but it was already the end yard. This become the defining moments of Coach Grant and his players as he redeem the Team's Trust and Support of Never Quit to God.

10)        THE ROAD BACK
The Shiloh Eagles now are ready to face the opponents armed with a new mindset. A winning and a motivated mindset to face the opponents.

11)        THE RESURRECTION
The Shiloh Eagles team have won their next game.  This became a surprise because they have beaten one of the strongest team in the league. Removing all the doubts for the Shiloh Eagles.

12)        THE RETURN OF ELIXIR
Coach Grant and Siloh Eagles have now earn the respect of the league. Coach grant transform the team to one of the successful winning team in the history of Highschool football league.

MY REFLECTION

1)           THE HERO IS INTRODUCED IN HIS ORDINARY WORLD
I would like to reflect my chosen movie to how I started my leadership career at my current company. In 2005, I graduated as Electronics Engineering in Mapua, took the board exam by 2006 and got hired by Fluor Daniel Inc. Philippines as part of their Engineering New Graduate Program.  I was part of the Control Systems Engineering and my first job is control systems design. Years passed, I have developed my skills and career with the company. I was recognized as Subject Matter Expert, a distinguish award given to individuals who shows exemplary skills in the area of Engineering and Design.

2)           THE CALL TO ADVENTURE
I have been a star individual performer for most of the time. I am recognized for my efforts yet I feel something is missing with my career experience. I realize that I now want to be a Project Lead rather that will manage my own team. I know I am star performer but I also want to lead a team of my own. Plan, Organize, Lead and Control my own team.
In late 2011, I have talked to my Department Manager with regards to my career plan, he was supportive but during that time there is no new project awarded that I could start to lead. A few months later, a window of opportunity have open; the company has just finished putting up the new Cebu office and my Manager wants me to be part of the core group that will start the Cebu Team.

3)           THE HERO IS RELUCTANT AT FIRST
I was excited with the Cebu office opportunity; however I suddenly realize that a big challenge awaits me as I have no experienced leading a project. I will be working with new faces, new work ethic. I can be sure that I can perform individually but I became doubtful of myself if I am really ready to be a Project Lead even Lead the Cebu Control Systems Team.

4)           THE HERO IS ENCOURAGED BY THE WISE OLD MAN OR WOMAN
I went to my cousin's house to seek some advice because he is a Sales Lead for Insurance Company and he is my closest relatives that I can always count to and discuss things such as work, family and career. Because he really knew me since childhood, he knows that I have no problem in dealing with people. I can easily adjust to any working environment and encourage me to just be in myself and my natural leadership capability will arise.
I accept the assignment, and in Septembr 4, 2011 I became part of the history of Fluor Cebu office opening and eventually met my Wife also in Fluor Cebu.

5)           THE HERO PASSES THE FIRST THRESHOLD
Fast forward, I have train and lead Cebu members in executing Fluor Projects. I have become a Project Lead by 2013. One of the first challenges I have encountered is working with my counterpart Project Lead that is located in Manila. Since this project is a joint effort between Manila and Cebu, I had to talk regularly with my Manila counterpart. This became my struggle for the past 2 months of the project but when my Team did an outstanding job and recognized by the project, I earn the respect of the Manila Project Management group including my counterpart.

6)           THE HERO ENCOUNTERS TESTS AND HELPERS
Just I started my career as project lead; my father has been diagnosed with Gastric Cancer. It was really a tough time for my Family. Since my mother is working abroad, my sister took care of my Father as I am residing and working in Cebu. I traveled almost every weekend to be with my father and support my sister in taking care of our father.

7)           THE HERO REACHES THE INNERMOST CAVE
The cancer treatment is expensive and even if our Mother works abroad, it can't cover all the operating expenses for the treatment. My Dad health insurance has already been max out. We have to go to PCSO to get financial aid for the hospitalization and medicines.

8)           THE HERO ENDURES THE SUPREME ORDEAL
In July 31, 2013 I was about to board the plane going back to Manila when I received a call. It is my sister, she is crying so loud and my tears began to fall immediately, I knew that our Father has passed away and I did not able to see him for the last minute before he died.
It was so painful that I sometimes blame myself that if I didn't agree with the Cebu Assignment I would be able to watch and be with my Father.

9)           THE HERO SEIZES THE SWORD
After my father's death, I have decided to continue my career here in Cebu. I have decided that I will make my father proud even if I am here in Cebu and continue to work hard as he always remind of us.

10)        THE ROAD BACK
As I get back to my project lead role, It has been clear to me the road I am going to path to develop my career. It was those time, that I have started to fulfill one of my goals that I always shared with my cousin that is to have a degree in MBA.

11)        THE RESURRECTION
I have successfully finished leading my first project and it was a success. We have met the project Key Performance Indicators and we are rewarded with an incentive for our good performance. My Leadership was recognized by the Management and I was nominated for stretch assignments to further enhance my leadership skills including training programs that focus on development of leadership skills.

12)        THE RETURN OF ELIXIR
Today, I am now one of the pillars of our Department and part of the Regional Talent Development Team, a program for those potential leaders that will lead the company in the future. I continue being a project lead and conduct coaching and mentoring to the young engineers of the company.
