Regis Cebu Leadership Final Integrative Paper – by Leader Juvelon Abante

Introduction:

I was asked during the first day of the leadership class on what kind of leader I want to be. I answered I want to be a transformational leader just like Steve Jobs. This is my immediate answer because I have read so many articles about Steve Jobs and I told myself that I want to follow his leadership style. But these made me change my perspective on leadership for the past 8 weeks that  I am taking this class. I realize that I should stop being Steve Jobs and be just Myself.  I should focus on my strengths and work on my weaknesses just as Self awareness is the first key to discovering my journey to servant leadership. The Four Key Leadership Principle for this subject is about self awareness, ingenuity, heroism and love. These are the most essential traits that every leader should possessed and to be taught on the next generation of servant leaders.

I.             Where Am I Now?

My submitted papers and class activities have help me to answer the question by reflecting on my life's journey to where I am now.

1.    Enneagram
Shown below is the summary of my enneagram result showing the most and least points I got on the different personality type.
Type
Score
Reflection

1 – Orderliness

Type 1 – 1pts
This is where I got a lowest point because a lot of times I don't focus on the instructions but rather on how people will execute. I am not the type of person to strictly implement instructions but hear other's opinion before execution.

2 – Helpfulness

Type 2 – 7pts
This is my highest score among all types because this holds true that I am "The Helper".  Most of the time I value others feelings and based my act on decisions not only according to myself.

3 – Image Focus

Type 3 – 5pts
Because I am a people person, there is a tendency that I always think of others perspective on me. I always try to focus on being a people with Integrity so that people would not lose trust on me as I lead them.

Learning Reflection:  The results just confirms on how I know well my personality.  Being the helper really reflects my attitude towards other people. Self awareness plays a vital role here to know my strengths. I will work on my lowest point and improve them so that I could use that as my learning points as I work on my weaknesses.

2.    Genogram
All this time, I thought I already know much of my family history both from my Father and Mother but this activity gives me a lot more information about them and some of the learning realization includes:
A.      Most of my relatives are Overseas Filipino Workers – Just like my Mom and Dad, most of my Uncle and Aunties are working abroad to sustain a living. This is one area that I do not want to happen for myself because I see that working abroad sometimes lead to a broken family that is why I am striving hard in the corporate to sustain my family and not think of working abroad.
B.      Some of my leadership traits come from my Father Side – My Father is an active member of different organizations in our community. My Lolo and My uncle as well is part of different political groups in Batangas and with their experiences and what I am practicing now then I am concluding that I have inherited them from my Father Side.
C.      We have close family ties – Both sides promote reunion whenever there is an occasion. That is why I am close to my relatives and I also want to apply it to my own family and to the next generation.

Learning Reflection:  My Genogram help me trace my roots and allow me to reflect that Family plays a big important role in my journey. My relatives have guide ma and my sister during the time that both of my parents are working abroad. This activity allows me to envision on what future I want for my own family. I want to maintain the closeness of my Family and my relatives. I want to educate my Kids and my Niece that Family Values is very important and we should continue what our relatives have started and maintain to preserve our clan.

3.    JCampbelll Monomyth and My Life Story
My chosen movie is "Facing The Giants", An action-packed drama about a Christian high school football coach who uses his undying faith to battle the giants of fear and failure.   Here I discover the time I was called for leadership. I have been a star individual performer for most of the time. I am recognized for my efforts yet I feel something is missing with my career experience. I realize that I now want to be a Project Lead rather that will manage my own team. I know I am star performer but I also want to lead a team of my own. Plan, Organize, Lead and Control my own team.  I was given the opportunity by my Department Manager and after the challenges, I made it through.
I have successfully finished leading my first project and it was a success. We have met the project Key Performance Indicators and we are rewarded with an incentive for our good performance. My Leadership was recognized by the Management and I was nominated for stretch assignments to further enhance my leadership skills including training programs that focus on development of leadership skills. Today, I am now one of the pillars of our Department and part of the Regional Talent Development Team, a program for those potential leaders that will lead the company in the future. I continue being a project lead and conduct coaching and mentoring to the young engineers of the company.

Learning Reflection:  It was not an easy road for me when called to corporate leadership but thru my perseverance and the assistance of my mentors including my supportive wife I was able to pass the threshold and became success in the calling of leadership. There may be difficulty along the way but there are people who are willing to lend a hand and can mold you to become a better leader of the company.

4.    HBR Readings and Chris Lowney
Both are very good leadership references but HBR is more focused on the corporate leadership while Chris Lowney is into Servant Leadership.

Learning Reflection:  In HBR, the different articles can help me become a better leader in our company especially that I am new to the leadership role and being introduced in the managerial responsibilities.  I may encounter different adaptive or technical challenges but these are just part of the crucibles of leadership. According to HBR, "Everyone is tested by life, but only a few extract strength and wisdom from their most trying experiences. They're the one we call leaders".

In Chapter 4 of Chris Lowney textbook, one of the leadership lessons is to develop oneself into excellence or what so called the mastery. Leaders are of high respect when they have mastery on what they do.

5.    Call to Arms Speech – "The Way Of The Shepherd"
In my CTA, I choose to discuss the topic that close to my heart and I am very familiar, this is the leadership of the shepherd. I have discussed 7 steps in managing people and these steps are now my guiding principles as I start to lead my own team.

Learning Reflection:  I am not yet practicing all of those mentioned 7 steps but I believe by always taking a reflection on my leadership style then I could adapt to its leadership style.  This have been my choice of leadership so I must concentrate on implementing this on my people and also to my family

6.    Reflection Paper 1 – My Defining Moments
I always thought that defining moments are those dramatic moments that you always see in cinemas or television. Such as Michael Jordan having the game winning shot that makes the Chicago Bulls the NBA Champions, not until I have read Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney where the author defines that our defining "moment" is a pattern slowly etched through a life time studded with ordinary opportunities to make subtle differences. This definition makes me realize that I do also have my own defining moments in my own ordinary way.
One of my defining moments is when I have transferred to Cebu. I have chosen to move here and start my Family even if I have a good career path that awaits me in Manila. Looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made for now I am blessed with my loving wife, a Two wonderful kids and a good job here in Cebu.

Learning Reflection: As I reflect on these defining moments, these little bits of ordinary experiences are remarkable subtle that define my leadership style. The 3 Es best describes my leadership. These are Envisioning, Energizing and Enabling. I already envision myself as leader who stands for the team.  Energizing my workplace by inspiring them to accomplish our one common goal.  Enabling my team by coaching and influencing them to reach their full potential.

7.    Reflection Paper 2 – External and Internal Factors
My family values contributed for what I am today. I am humble because of my mother. I am a disciplinarian because of my family. I have study hard during my college because of my mother always reminding me to value our studies.  I have been responsible at an early age because I need to watch my younger sister and thus we became close and best friends to each other until we grow up.
For the internal factor, Coaching is my strength; I find it easy on boost self-esteem on my team members even on the most challenging times of our project. This is why I drives the changes to our team to execute our project successfully.

Learning Reflection: External and Internal Factors shaped for what I am now. My family value plays a big part on what we are practicing in my own family. My focus on my studies converts to a good career at work. Being aware of my strengths and weaknesses enable me to assess my leadership model.  Being self- aware, I can act and decide on matters according to I am capable of or not. This is where I drive my goals and values and how I can made an impact to others.

8.    Reflection Paper 3 – My Passion
Reflecting on my strengths, I can say that Teaching is my passion and now that I am equipped with the heroic leadership mindset, I want to influence people with the same mindset. Aside from being passionate in training my people in the company, in the future I also want to be a motivational speaker in leadership.

Learning Reflection: One of the reasons why I am taking my MBA is to be able to teach in University. I have applied before as a part time faculty instructor but not accepted because of lack of masteral. As a way of supporting my passion to teach and train people, I will apply again as faculty instructor after I have taken my MBA and b able to apply my learning's in Ateneo and in my work.  If I will retire from my corporate job, I want to be a full time faculty teaching management and engineering.

9.    My AVP – "The Best Days of my Life"
I have entitled my AVP as "The Best Days of my Life" for it reflects the different moments which I considered memorable and meaningful to my Life. From my childhood, to my graduation up to my wedding and having a family on my own, this also includes my experience in Ateneo MBA.

Learning Reflection: I realize that I have to value every moment I had with my love ones. Those precious moments are once in a while so I have to seize every opportunity to show my love and care for my family. Just like what happen in my Dad, just after our wedding, he was diagnosed with Gastric Cancer and with just less than a year he died, it was painful experience for us and also a defining moment for my family.

II.           Where Am I Going?

I want to categorize into Two (2) goals to where I am heading in my life journey.
A.   PERSONAL
GOALS
DESCRIPTION

1.    To be the Best Head of The Family

I want to be a good leader also to my family.  I want to be the best and loving Husband to my Wife and the best Father for my Kids. I want to provide the best to my children most importantly on Education because I know Education will become their competitive advantage someday as they grow up and live on their own.

2.    Be an Entrepreneur

I want to start our own family business. A business that both me and my wife core expertise can be of used and turn into profit. Also my Wife and I have a vision of adapting a foundation someday that we could fully support such as sending kids to school and I think that by if we can start our own business then we could achieve our vision.

3.    Follow my passion of Teaching

My Reflection Paper 3 completely tells me that I have the passion for teaching and thus someday If I were to retire in my corporate Job I will fulfill my dream to teach in the Academe. I want to teach Management Subject including Engineering Subject. I can apply my learning in Ateneo MBA to my students and future leaders of my class.

B.   CORPORATE
GOALS

1.    Engineering Manager

I have written in my 5 year plan in the Learning Agreement that I want to be an Engineering Manager. I want to lead all Engineering Disciplines in successfully executing a projects. I believe that narrowing into Two Categories only, I can have a better view of what I want to achieve in my life. The leadership journey I want and the clear picture that I want to paint.

III.          How Do I Get There?

MY STRATEGIC PLAN
COMPONENTS
ACTION PLAN

1.    Personal
ü  I should start by having a healthy life style. I am now 31 years old and I am not getting young anymore. I will prioritize to have a healthy body by exercising regularly.
ü  Focus in finishing my MBA in Ateneo and apply this learnings in my leadership journey.

2.    Family
ü  I have to spend more quality time with my Family. Spend more time teaching my kids and playing with them. Go to church every Sunday, drive them around when going to the grocery.
ü  To strive to continue to be a better husband for my wife.
ü  For my relatives, I need to continue the close family ties thus I should always keep in contact with my relatives in Batangas and Manila even if I am residing in Cebu. I shoud pay a visit at least once a year to my ancestral home in Cavite and visit my relatives and friends.

3.    Work

ü  I will request with my Department Head that my next job function is a role that could support my vision of being an Engineering Manager. It will be either I accept the role of being a Department Manager or Project Engineering Manager. Currently my role is a Project Lead Engineer and I should be ready to accept a bigger role and responsibilities if I am aiming for a higher position.
ü  Use the readings from Harvard Business Review for any future leadership roles I am called for.

As I remember the video that was shown to us in the Class, Steve Jobs told the graduating students of Stanford University the words "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish", these are powerful words of encouragement and I am using them as well in doing my strategic plans and head to the journey that I want in my life.
