Call to ARMS - My Advocacy
Leader Kerwin Mark L. Gubantes, MD
Ladies and Gentlemen, friends, friends of Mother Earth, good Morning! It is with great concern that I am before you today. As you could see around you and witness firsthand the destruction Mankind has brought upon our Home Planet. Greenhouse gases polluting the atmosphere and the air that we breath, increasing carbon dioxide levels from every source imaginable is elevating the temperature of our planet. This phenomenon leads to Melting of the Ice Shelves and consequently leads to rising sea levels and warming of the waters. Furthermore there are already signs of bleaching and destruction of the coral reefs documented in many parts of the planet such that there is already disruption of the Marine ecosystem and thus depletion of the food supply chain. The changing weather patterns, stronger typhoons and Hurricanes, longer droughts in many parts of the world as well as the rise of many deadly diseases can all be traced to the wanton destruction of Mother Earth. When is it going to stop? When do we start to realize what we have done? What are we going to do about it?
Maybe we could start by looking inwards first, our very lives, how we conduct our day to day activities. Are we conserving energy? How can we lessen our carbon footprint? Maybe instead of cutting trees, we should start Planting again. We could start using energy efficient devices to reduce our need for power. Let us shift our focus on Renewable sources of energy like Solar, Geothermal, Wind and Hydroelectric to generate power to supply our needs. These sources will significantly cut the need for fossil fuels like coal which is widely used today to generate electricity.
We need a Collective effort, as leaders of many countries converge in Paris this week to tackle this huge problem, let us be One in making our voices be Heard - Act Now before it its too late. Cutting Emissions by at least 30 percent in the next 10 years and hopefully 50 percent in the next 20 years would significantly achieve the target of bringing down the global surface temperature by 2 degrees centigrade. We Need to Plant more Trees! Helping in this initiative will most definitely help lessen the impact of Carbon Dioxide in our Environment and prevent the Cycle of Destruction from happening. The Time is NOW! We need to Act or else there will be No future for our children and there children.
Climate Change is very Real and it is upon us! " Recent estimates of the increase in global average temperature since the end of the last ice age are 4 to 5 degrees centigrade. That change occurred over a period of about 7,000 years, starting 18,000 years ago.. Carbon dioxide has risen by 40 percent in just the past 200 years, contributing to human alteration of the planet's energy budget that has so far warmed Earth by about 0.8 degrees centigrade. If the rise in CO2 continue unchecked, warming of the same magnitude as the increase out of the ice age can be expected by the end of the century or soon after. This speed of warming is more than ten times that at the end of an ice age, the Fastest known natural sustained change on a Global scale" - according to The Royal Society and the US National Academy of Science.
I would like to end by quoting an anonymous source " Imagine if Trees give Free WiFi, we would be planting like Crazy, it is a Pity they Only give us the Oxygen that we BREATH"
Thank you!
Leadership subject at AGSB is an Ateneo advantage. It emphasizes leadership from within, authentic leadership. One of its pillars is love. This is odd in a cold steely corporate world. The others are heroism, ingenuity and self awareness. The goal of leadership is not only to develop oneself but to clone other leaders. Everybody has potential to be leader. What we do, even if we do not have followers influences/affects others. It is time to define Filipino leadership too
