Leadership in whatever we do though we do not have followers - story of Dr. Vivien Thomas

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Philippines, September 30, 2015

Dr Vivien Thomas at Wiki

While in a hotel room, I happened to watch the movie at HBO, Something the  Lord  Made, a movie about Dr. Vivien Thomas, a black lab research assistant, and Dr. Alfred Blalock.  We are reminded of book Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney, Chapter 4, page 63 on leadership role models.   The characters mentioned:   Jesuits Benedetto Goes, Matteo Ricci and Christopher Clavius are most unlikely leaders in the way we ordinary sense we understand it.   They are considered leaders though they do not have a battalion of followers,  but in being good/the best in what they do.

Same thing with Dr. Vivien Thomas.  He was called doctor at John Hopkins University Hospital, an honorary degree though he barely passed high school.

Reflection on  Leadership
For Ateneo MBA

by Alex Tan

I came from humble beginnings, hard as many might imagine. I'm just a provincial boy, growing up in backward Cebu. Back then i knew nothing of hardships, politics, traffic and crime. I hear about it in TVs, but Manila looks so far away, like a different country it seems. But then again, it seems like destiny calls me here, as what they say: Go where the Romans go. So here I am in Manila, excited but anxious towards a new beginning. A new place, but with no friends and away from my family. Going to school here and living here and getting a job here seems a normal thing do here. But in my experience, here is where I grew up a little bit faster, here is where I done things that I never thought possible. It's a blessing and a curse at the same time. This is how I came to know of Leadership within me.

Reflection Paper 1: Defining Moments (revised) - Anonymous

A Call for Independence and Responsibility

My story may have been heard from one of Charo Santos' Maalala Mo Kaya episodes. Maybe a cliché story of a teenage girl who fell in love, lost everything she had in her 19 years of life, but have gained more in the process. Let me take this opportunity to share my story, a chapter in my life that has been my foreground on whoever what I am today and whatever I have achieved so far. And yes, this may be the hardest time in my life but this had defined me in all aspects. I was on my 3rd year at the University, year 2003, in the midst of youth and what I can call now an immature independence that I thought I have. I have enjoyed so much of being young and carefree, fell in love and gave everything to that one person. And you would know what happened next? Being so bewildered with young love, I got pregnant at the age of 19. My father got so mad, he kicked me out of the house and disowned me. I forced to live with the boy (the father of my baby) who was working as a fast food crew that time. Had to stop my school and also work in a fast food chain until at my 7th month pregnancy. The relationship didn't do well, had a lot of fights that oftentimes ends on being hurt physically. It was like an enclosed circle for me that I keep on moving and moving around, that it gets smaller and thicker, making it harder every day to escape from. Until a big fight came, my son just turned one (1), and while holding him, he hit me so hard, my son almost fell from my arms. I was so shaken that I have nothing in my mind except for my son. And I got awakened, found what my center is, and finally broke that circle where I was and got out of it. The rest of my story is history. My son and I lived on our own, I worked, went back to school, graduated and a good story afterwards.

Reflection Paper 1 by Leader Rachel Lopez - Defining Moments

Hello Prof Jorge,

Sending on both emails, thanks and have a nice weekend.

Reflection Paper 1 – Defining Moments

Making a decision was only the beginning of things and living alone started the twist of what I call life. It made me aware of who am I before, who am I now and who I want to be in the future.  With this reflection, I understand myself, the way I dealt with situations and what should be changed.

I was born in semi middle class family, both my parents have college degree and earned sufficiently. My father was a Policeman while my mother was an Accountant. When I was young, we had our own house and cars but we lose all of that because of my father's fondness in cockfight. My mother used to took care of all the bills and our necessities with her own salary. She must be tough. I had four siblings. Being the third, I had the middle child syndrome that yearned for attention. Compared to them, it was hard for me to ask for stuff.

Leaders are judged by how they appear

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

September 26, 2015

Yes Virginia, people judge books, and also leaders by their appearance, (cover)  Although we say dont.  From Life Hack - 7 things that people judge you

People judge leaders or us on the following:

1.  Shoes,
2.  Color of clothes
3.  Eyes,
4.  Handshake
5.  Punctuality
6   Biting your nails (finger, not the toe nails you.!>
7.  Your handwriting

Thus we train our employees on office decorum  (uniform, id, good grooming) and be punctual, not so much that they are rules or office discipline but to train them in the future to be great leaders.

Punctuality needs some comments now because of the extreme traffic problems lately.  But how how your people deal with them tells tons on how they prepare, plan, solve problems.  So trainers and motivation coach like Brian Tracy say that punctuality is the core of all other human character.

boss

The differences between managers and leaders are explained in depth at HBR must read articles (have they been read)

Please find further discussion in this Life Hack article  more distinctions:   They are concerned with the attitude or the boss as being the boss, follow or else.:

Thus they use fear, my way or your way in handling conflict, they never actively listen (see how Mayor Gatchalian a political science graduate, made a big difference in Valenzuela City by active listening, they never inspire people, they ignore competition, they think they know everything,  they dominate meeting, use fear to make people obey them,  and more..

Have you employed leaders or controllers?

Book readers make better Leaders

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

September 26, 2015

We have often read the quote:   "Those who read lead"

Now there is an article from Lifehack which says that there are 10 reasons why those who read make good leaders  (Get a free book too from the article)

If that is not enough, there is a story about a student who asked the famous investor Warren Buffett on  how to start an investing career.  Warren told the student he must be willing to read 500 pages of books and reports daily

So how do you start improving your reading habits?   Several years ago, as part of my reinventing myself, I vowed to read 20 books a year or 100 in 5 years.   It looks like a tall order.  This article says you can read 30 books a year by reading 20 pages per day.  Simple system of reading 30 books a year

Have you started reading the CD on Leadership?  Have you read the HBR must read on Leadership?

Reflection Paper 1 by Leader Maricon Bangayan - My Defining Moments

Good day Prof. Jorge,
Submitting my revised reflection paper.
Thank you.

 ******
I grew up in a simple family – having meals three times a day, renting a place to live, no car, and no savings account but with the hardwork of my parents and belief that education is the only thing they can give us, my siblings and I were able to finish studies.  My Papa worked as an employee at a Tin Can Factory and my Mommy is a medical secretary.  Both of them do not have a college degree.  During my childhood days, my siblings and I witnessed how it was very hard for my parents to come up with a sum of money just to pay for our tuition fee, rental payment, other school expenses and even the credit list at the store.  They often approached my aunts, grandmother, other relatives, their employer for the salary advance of course, and the so-called "5-6."  It was always financial matter that concerns our family.  Though, we are experiencing financial difficulty, I can say that life has been easy for me.  As a student, my primary goal is to graduate on time and with no failing grades, which I did.  It is a no-no for me to be a repeater, to fail or to be an irregular student, simply because we cannot afford additional expense.  As young as 12 years old, I have been doing small jobs like clinic assistant, bakeshop/gift shop staff, front desk staff and a nanny.  The income I earned is not for expense of the family, which I am so proud of my parents because they did not oblige us to work for additional income of the family.  The income I earned is for my personal use – to buy bag, shoes or join my friends to watch movie or go to the mall.  Mommy always told me that they cannot give us extra money for those stuffs so we better work for it to have it.  I am not a selfish sister and a daughter.  I share my blessings to them – I gave money to my siblings as payment for their school requirements like payment for journals, membership fee, even gave them extra baon.  I even threw a 9th birthday party celebration for my younger sister because her birthday is on the month of May – enrollment time so to celebrate her birthday is always the last priority.  I also bought grocery items for our consumption.  I also gave transportation allowance to Papa.

Revised Reflection Paper No. 1 by Leigh Abarquez - Defining Moments

 Dear Sir,
Sending the updated/revised reflection paper, for your perusal.
Thanks and kind regards,
Leigh  4
Leighna Katrina Sitoy-Abarquez Leadership – MM

25 September 2015

"There are significant human experiences in our lives that give us those opportunities to step up to certain challenges, and be catalysts for change."
My father has sort of "brainwashed" me, albeit in a good way, living through these words growing up. Understandably, he is a politician, or as he would often correct me, a public servant.
***
One childhood experience I had that made an impact to me was when my father decided to bring the entire family to Cebu (from Manila), when he ran (and won) for Mayor in our town. That was in 1996. I was in third year high school then. I could not fully comprehend his reasons. I even thought it was just plain selfishness. I remembered asking him why he cannot just be contented with just being the head of our household.  And his reply was, "there's more to life than just us." He would say, "opportunities are but fleeting moments, you have to be very mindful and open to see these as they come, and to be able to turn these opportunities, be it easy or difficult, as means to make yourself and the people around you, grow and live to their full potential."

I grew up in a political family. Some would see it as a curse, some as a blessing, some as a very big responsibility. I would say, it's a mix, but a good mix, depending on how I've perceived it through the years. When I was younger, I hated the publicity, I hated the "superficial aspects" of Philippine politics—oh yes, I had my fare share of song and dance numbers during election period!  Those superficial activities, I think, up until now, will sum up to be the "curse" and dreadful part.  However, through time, I am now beginning to realize, and see what my father has always wanted me to see with the work he does. Growing up in a political family is a very big blessing that also carries an even bigger responsibility. There were big sacrifices we took, as family. Time with the family lost because of some other community affair. PTA meetings that were missed because of some calamity that had to be attended to first. Even financial constraint was something we also had to contend to.

Which is the better GSB?

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

In the recent faculty development seminar conducted by Regis for GSB faculty, there was a lot of pow wow on the quality of GSB education. Which is better:   UP, De La Salle or Ateneo.

The chair of Mark Man department commented that Ateneo is better in delivering GSB education.  It is a professional school, meaning to say that most of its faculty are professionals:  working practicing business executives who do not work out from the workbook or text but from the richness of their working experience.  And thus are more experienced; and are both expert academically (theory ) and in reality (practice)  So AGSB students are lucky and fortunate to have this kind of teaching staff.

They also know how to draw from the experience of their students who are working professionals.   AGSB is populated by more a thousand working professional GSB students!

In one of the GSB, one of the Professors who teaches Entrepreneurship who also chairs their department was asked what he will do when he retires, he said "he will probably start a business."  I am shocked to learn too that the head of a very famous school on entrepreneurship who writes and talks a mouthful on entrepreneurship has not run a large business, nor was he ever successful in running one.

We say that leaders are not judged by what they say, but what they do and who they are.  (Eh may kuwento ng mga flying objects while he conducts class as was shared in one of the story telling sessions of the faculty)

Reflection Paper #1 by Leader Erika - Defining Moments

Hi Sir,

Resending my reflection paper without the attachment:

Reflection Paper#1:

What were your defining moments? What incidents / events taught you to be better/transformed you.

I would like to think of myself as a work in progress, and by that I mean a lot of work is needed. I am 32 years old and I still cannot say that I know what I'm doing. When I was younger, I would describe myself as a very competitive and ambitious person. I had a road map and had set goals for myself, and was very confident I could achieve them. In fact, one of my best friends from high school with whom I had a very recent reunion with, reminded me of this because I had forgotten this aspect of myself. As I grew older, my priorities and outlook have changed to much simpler things.

To give context to my story, perhaps a history of my family and my life is needed. I was born to a regular middle class family, with both my parents having college degrees. Education was the legacy of my parents and grandparents because they did not have much possessions to leave behind.

Restatement of guidelines for submission of Reflection Papers/Assignments

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

To   :    Every Class Leaders

Date:    September 24, 2015

I am giving everyone an opportunity to re submit their reflection papers to conform to the content requirements up to Sunday,  September 27, 2015.  The benchmark, which you could exceed is the paper of your Class President  and several others who did well.and the Reflection Papers of the previous class. Publishing the work of others and making them transparent to your classmates increases their learning and puts pressure on them to come up with the best paper they could endeavor to accomplish. You can do that?  Yes you can!  The Leaders at Rockwell, are better than Leaders elsewhere at the AGSB system?! Let us show this....

It should come close to the format of the HBR must reads where the following (lifted from the post/pages on Class Assignments:
Reflection Papers

Not less than 2 pages 1000 words

Reflection Paper:

It should contain:

1.  What is the new learning?
2.  What is the relation to what I all ready know?
3.  What have I done, am doing, will be doing for this topic?

There seems to be a difficulty in uploading your assignments.  I have repeated in emails and in the class that the site does not accept attachments.  (Some keep saying there are attachments) Copy the contents of your attachment and paste in the email page.

The reflection paper may be in word or powerpoint.  If in power point, upload to a Slideshare account and send using the blog send email address,profjorge.entrep.jermits@blogger.com,  The word reflection paper may be sent in the same manner.  PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTION.  YOUR PAPER WILL BE GRADED IF SENT ONLY IN THE ABOVE MENTIONED MANNER!

If your paper does not get published, the reasons could be:

1.  Nothing came out of the blog post because it has an attachment;
2.  The paper does not come up to the standards, you should re submit;
Or it may be published without the grade. The grade could be seen near your name, at the bottom of the page or at the labels

N.B. The paper must be sent uploaded on the designated dates, otherwise there will be 1 deduction for late papers

Here are some notes on DEFINING MOMENTS from this blog  (Please click link)

There should be no conflicting instructions or confusions as with regards to submission of very few assignments because the procedures are written and cut and dried.

N.B. One of the earmarks of good leader is the ability to listen and understand very well, or followership.  Your paper should always bear the hall marks of a great leader - thus you must endeavor to work on your assignments and always give it your best shot.

I call upon all the Leaders to look for magis inside you  so that you will submit very good assignments. <leadership from within>  As of now, most of what I have are lacking in fire and passion and sign that you gave your best effort.

Leader Richard said that self awareness ignites passion in you.

By next week, the blogsend email address shall be profjorge.entrep.jermits@blogger.com

For your guidance

Reflection Paper 1 from Leader Maye A. Gutierrez -Defining Moments

By: Leader Maye  A. Gutierrez  3.5

Every night when I tuck my 4 kids to bed, they always want me to tell them stories about my childhood.   There were times that I run out of stories to tell and I end up telling this memoir over and over again.  It can be true.  Memories of our childhood can stay forever in our minds…

Kids, Let me start my story when I was in grade 2.  I had a classmate named Christine who everybody admired.  It was my first time to hear of such a beautiful name. She was brilliant and had strikingly rosy-white skin (even long before glutathione was introduced).  She was fluent in English (when English was completely unheard of in my home except with the occasional "What is your name?") and most of all, she was the President of our class—our "Chosen Leader."

Reflection Paper 1 - by Leader May Roxas

Reflection Paper 1 - May Roxas

What were your defining moments? What incidents/events taught you to be better/transformed you?
2004: Family Business Got Bankrupt
I was born from an average household. My father was the sole breadwinner and my mother stopped working when I turned one because she wanted to take care of me full time. I have one sister and she is five years my junior. Year 2000, the factory where my father was working, closed down. He had an offer to relocate to Cagayan de Oro, but he chose not to because of the location. He received a large sum of money as a retirement fee and together with my mother, they decided to put up a trucking business. Being inexperienced, the business slowly went bankrupt and we incurred a lot of debt. From four trucks and two vans, we were left with one van (which is by the way, already second-hand) which my father used for shuttle service and for Laguna-Lucena-Laguna trips. But the income generated from this job was never enough for our family. I was staying in campus during my five years in college and in my last year, my allowance was greatly reduced that I remember skipping meals in order to afford other school expenses, such as projects and reading materials. We had to loan money from relatives and the bank to sustain all our expenses.
Because they were unable to get into college and because they believe that having a good education will help improve our own lives, my parents were hard pressed for both my sister and I to finish. They stopped at nothing to make sure that we have what we need to finish our schooling. I remember times when they are the ones who go to Recto in order to find me a book that I need. It was also a good thing that I'm studying in UP at that time, so the tuition fee was not as high as the other good universities in the country. For my graduation, they borrowed money from my Lola and neighbor so I can pay the graduation fees and tickets. As soon as I finished school, I started to look for work to help add income to our family. But I also want to take the board exam and become a Licensed Chemical Engineer. Because of this, I accepted the first job offer that I received and that is as a Quality Control (QC) Engineer in an Electronics Company in Laguna. My starting salary is only P 8,000 a month and my first pay was used to enroll in a review school and buy the book required during the licensure exam. I worked hard to balance work and studying during the months before the board exam. I feel so envious of my batchmates who have nothing else to do than study. There were even times that I cried of exhaustion. But all my hard work got paid off when I passed the board exam November 2005. A few months after, I resigned from the Electronics Company and applied in JGC – an engineering and construction company in Alabang. I was hired as a Junior Instrument Engineer.
Being a fresh graduate, my salary in JGC was only entry-level. This means that it was never enough. Thus, my father still needed to continue working on the shuttle terminal, so that my sister can continue with college and we can pay our debts. I no longer wanted my father to make those trips because he was already 55 at that time. The vehicle he was driving was so worn out that it gets broken down every now and then. Because of that, his hard-earned money just usually goes to the repair. Additionally, he did not have an LTFRB license to provide the commuter service. This means that he always had to watch-out for the LTO police.
After a year in JGC, I was given an opportunity to work overseas. I was sent to Japan to do engineering work for an oil and gas company in Qatar. This was a big help for me because even if the assignment was only 8 months, my salary improved and I was able to save. Therefore, I was also able to help my family meet our daily needs, pay our debts and send my sister to school.
Losing our source of income helped me see that life is not easy. That wanting something means working hard for it. But more importantly, one should know what he/she wants first, before he/she can work towards that goal.

Hello Prof. Jorge,

Here's my reflection paper on defining moments.

MY LIFE'S DEFINING MOMENTS
Jermits G. Rabonza
Nakalahad sa Filipino
Sinisimulan ko ang kwentong ito sa pag-aakalang madaling magbalik tanaw sa buhay.
Hindi pala. Umpisa palang, parang gusto ko nang isara ang memorya ko.
Pero sige. Subukan.
What were your defining moments?  What incidents events taught you to be better/transformed you?

DEFINING MOMENTS

Church of the Holy Spirit, Upper Thomson Road, Singapore
December 2011.
For several months since I delivered my first-born child, I am in a predicament.  While attending a mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit in December 2011, I have deeply prayed, and with close eyes I have silently asked God for guidance.  As a faithful but a practical catholic, I was hoping to be relieved and did not expect any miracle out of it.  But when I opened my eyes, I felt like there was full blown light in the Church, suddenly I felt elated and my mind seemed cleared that I felt I know exactly what I am supposed to do.
Back in 2008, I was happy and content with my life.  I was working for a government agency that provides adequate compensation to finance my personal and partially support my parent's needs.  I was physically active, playing badminton every weekend with huge group of friends.  I was in a relationship with whom I get to travel and enjoy numerous gimiks with friends.  That was up until my sister finally convinced me to try to work abroad,to expand my horizon and explore the better or best things in life.  So I resigned from my job, bid farewell to my friends, packed my things and ventured to a world unknown. (Lesson learned: there will come a time, by your own choice or not, that you have to embrace changes in order to grow).

Pres Obama welcomed Pope Francis to the US at the White House Ceremonies.  The US President has glowing adulation and praises for the Pope, and the Catholics educating children, feeding the hungry providing shelter to the homeless.

And yet we wonder even with Pres Obama's mention of God and Catholics if he is authentic.  Some quarters claim he is an Iluminati and in some videos, he mentions US to be a Muslim nation.  What do you think?

What will be the achievement of Pope visit to the US?

Reflection Paper 1 - Defining Moments by Leader Justin Quilon

Hi Prof. Jorge,

Good Day!

Here's my Reflection 1 - Defining Moments by Justin Quilon

What were your defining moments?  What incidents events taught you to be better/transformed you.

In Don Bosco, I learned the saying "Begin with the end in mind". At this point, I would like to thank Prof. Jorge for giving us an opportunity to take a step back and reflect on our life. Amidst our busy schedule, this is a chance to be reminded of the things we've gone through, the challenges we've conquered, and the life lessons we got. I'll be sharing stories of my life in different parts. I hope to be a blessing to anyone who will be reading this article.

First, I would like to introduce myself, I'm Justin Quilon. I was born in a simple family. Both my parents got married when they were still young. They did not come from rich families. My grandparents in my mother side were poor. They need to support their 4 kids by sawing clothes. They have only 1 sawing machine. I am the eldest in our family. I have 2 siblings. We started our life very simple.

Here are some of my defining moments:

Leadership Journey of the two Class Leaders

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

APS Building Rockwell, Makati City
September 18, 2015

Leader Mel Flores telling her story

                                  Leader Richard Tan

Leadership is about telling and sharing stories of success, failures, and meaningful experiences. And such, two leaders shared their stories yesterday with the class

Two of the class Leaders were requested to speak impromptu on their Leadership Journey:  Leaders Mel Flores and Richard Tan.  Both are vice presidents in their respective companies.

Wow

Leader Mel worked abroad  and local in many entry level positions.  But her long years of experience in Singapore gave her confidence and the skills needed in her current job.  It appeared from this Lecturer that she started out with the goal to occupy superior and responsible position.

Leader Richard Tan too had global stint.  But was remarkable in the journey of Leader Richard was that he learned a lot by getting out of the box of his job description.  He was in financial services group, in gas and energy company - Chevron and finally in a BPO company.  They started in the BPO company with only 3 employees and now they are expanding.

Wow, Inspiring stories

It could be tough in the future if this becomes the norm for future leaders ie to have  cross cultural, cross border experience to be on top of the rapidly changing global economy

APS Building Rockwell Makati City

The judges group led by Leader VP Mel Flores yesterday announced the winner for the last week's debate:   Are Leaders born, made or situational.   As of the class departure time last week, their group (the judges group) had not announced the winner.

And the winner is Group - Leaders are born.  She said that the way the group was united and the way they held and defended the position made them win the debate.

Congratulations Leader, and they were given a prize, a small token in recognition of their being more (magis) in this particular class activity.  Keep this up
