There are usually 4 objectives of team building
1.  communication
2.  team bonding, building unity among members
3.  problem solving
4.  strategizing

The tower building accomplishes all the 4.  However, when restrictions were made that the members cant talk, # 1 is broken.   Planning, part of strategizing did not happen because of the time constraint.

However, we can see clearly that the Takeshi Castle game was mainly for development of strategy skill.  It is a combat/war situation and the two teams both take offensive and defensive positions.   Offensive to hit the paper targets on the opponents head, and defensive to prevent the opponents from hitting the target.

The combat situation is where the generals say that the best of strategy vanishes and melts.  It is  a very fluid situation that the commanders cant control, and the people in the field have to make judgement calls. At one time the team is the predator, and all of sudden, it becomes the prey (defensive)

When the team members try to protect each other, ducks or bends backward, is he or she "madaya?"  No that person is strategizing.  When the members complain to the judges their calls/decisions, the team members are not fighting the judges or the organizers.  They are strategizing, They are using all the available means, to throw off the judges/opponents so t hat they win.   They are all part of the strategy dynamics.

So in this exercise, many learned in practical way what is strategy, what real strategy is all about.  They may get lost with Davids so many tools of strategy, but at Prados farm, we learned what it is really all about.

  1. I agree Prof. Jorge, specially in the last part wherein the opposing teams had a face to face battle. Bending backward is not "madaya". We just should have worn our bandanas to cover the lower part of our face like a robber and also we should have used our shades to cover our eyes. Great job by the organizers in including this game which promotes an almost real life war experience. Complete with the use of our mind for strategizing, body for running and evading, and lastly spirit for having the will to win despite the challenge of the strong kitchen tissue. :)

  3. Haha. Super absorbent! Also being tall was an unforseen advantage. As my headgear was almost,if not completely dry. πŸ˜€ In retrospect, i believe our strategies have work tremendously better against our faster more agile opponents. Not to take away anything from the other team, as their strategiy of luring us into a running battle was a good one. But ultimately i believe our core tactics was more fundamentally sound. As the book"art of war" would say "know your enemy, and know urself and you would win the war evertime."
We knew that we had limitations in our team. And i felt that(if not correct) that they have a more agile, more competitive team. But we agreed on a few solid strategies to counteract those advantages.
    1. We are to protect each other at all sides ,all the time.
    2. We are to line up and spread ourselves, so to make it more difficult to target us in bunches
3.if an instance that we are to be drawn to a firefight we are to split in teams(buddy system) so to protect each other still.
    4. Use cover of each other or envirorment to protect from fire.
And lastly, to target opponents one at a time, meaning fire in the same direction as your teamates. Concentrate fire. Take down opponents one at a time.
These are the same tactis i use when i play war games.ΓΌ and i believe it worked for our teams advantage. πŸ‘

    1. Luring the enemy into the battle or avoiding battle and choosing the battle time of your choosing are great tactics/strategies that can be learned from Sun Tzu. I am glad that was mentioned and that the teams really talked and had strategic battle plan. That was the great idea. I appreciate these comments that shows deeper understanding/learning from the events that unfolded

  4. Prof Jorge, if I may, I believe the main concern in calling the judges attention is to ascertain if the other team's tactics and strategies are allowed within the bounds of the rules of the game. Both teams aim to win the game so they try to outsmart the other, however, I think as leaders we should be keen on playing clean and fairly. "The end does not justify the means" they say. So in the end, it doesn't matter who wins or loses the points, the one who kept and walked with his integrity are all winners.

  5. Hi Leader Mel you are absolutely right. Our leaders are smart and as true leaders, sometimes winning was the paramount thing to do. The leaders, I observed for both teams are smart players. And were bent on exploring the rules to the edges.
