What to expect in the next 3 weeks?

'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

It is going to be downhill beginning on the fifth session.  Save for the 3rd reflection paper, and the submission of the final requirement (the AV presentation and the summary of what was learned) it is going to be less tension filled and relatively easy.

Here is a recap of the next 3 sessions:

5     Group team building             Genogram                                 Genogram and Reflection Paper 2
                                            Leadership and Decision Making

  6.   Call to arms - leadership       Passion                                   speech 5 minutes; start showcase                                                                                                                       presentation

     7.   What ails PH, the world    Fr. Nebres, Dean Albert, Dr Bengzon      Reflection   Paper 3
                                                      Albert presentation                        Leadership showcase presentation

We have advised the class to prepare for the final requirements, as we would start the AV presentation on the sixth session.  We are ahead of the syllabus as many have submitted their Syllabus, and since last week, many have uploaded their Reflection Paper 2.

What are the rationale (the WHY according to Leader Michael) behind these activities?

1. Team Building

Why do you need team building games and exercises especially if you are leading a group of people (Probably not useful if all you have is your Med Sec?) All of you know what team building is all about.  My experience on team building exercises, which included  mountain climbing and 4x4 expedition resulted in :

      1.  improved communication

      2.  tremendous jump in productivity

      3. unforgettable experience of bonding and kinship (former employees always talk about the mountain climbing expedition or the obstacle course, or treasure hunt etc)

Team building exercises builds courage and initiative among the staff.  HR practitioners think that if you can do it, or simulate this in a game, it will predict how your staff will act in a real job situation.  Thsu companies spend heavily on outing, and outdoor team building sorties.

What do leader TVL and Dr Suzette have to say about this?

2   Speech and communication

Leaders must influence their followers or constituents.  And what is their only resource?  Their communication skills. We may not be able to move mountains or equipment, but as leaders we can move the hearts and minds of others with out tongue and pen.  (no malicious thought please hehehe)  Thus we have practice and sharpen their speaking and writing skills.

One of the best seminars I attended was the Dale Carnegie course of ETIOP (it cost about P700 then.  A sizeable sum since the minimum wage then was P250/month.   The bulk of the course was making two minute speech on subjects that are raffled;  speaking on the floor without a script.  The only script was:   What do you want to tell them, explain what you are trying to tell them. I think, and I hope Leader Tristan would agree with me, that this was a good investment.  So next session, we will try this, It does not have to be an earthshaking piece.  But a call to action and if needed, a Call to War.

3.   Critical and analytical thinking

In one of the Video presentation that is in the Desktop for your reference, the Dean Emeritus of Stanford U said that Critical Analytical Thinking (CAT) is a definite advantage of a leader in decision making.  What is CAT.  (You can learn more at Personal Mastery Slideshare of the Lecturer).  An MBA grad must be equipped with CAT and this is supposed to be practiced in case analysis (Do you practice CAT?) A leader mentioned that she was influenced by being a CAT officer

   CAT would involve:

    1.  Challenging the question and the assumption;

    2.  Asking why in everything that comes before you.  Not to accept hearsays, the ability to sift data and information (JPE at the Corona trial showed this well)

    3.  What data is relevant or irrelevant. Is your data related to the objective? or to the proposed strategy.?  Say in Macro analysis, students mention a lot of data that are meaningless (read my lips -  irrelevant to the objective or the goals of the organizaiton

    4. What is the magnitude of the data?   Is it anectdotal, or is the number is large enough to merit a condlusion that will be useful to others?

    5.  Direction of the data -  moving north, south, or sideways.

    6.  Are your conclusions logical  (syllogism)

CAT would also involve use of various operational tools, and the ability to generate alternative solution and weighing their respective cost benefit.

This in my observation is a chink in the armor of many of MBA students, and even graduates even at this school.  You should strive to learn this.  It a must that you learn this, if you havent please do

Yes Prof, I agree with you that there is a great correlation between leadership and team building. One of the most important tasks of leadership, in fact, is being able to put together a good team and to support its members in doing their best, Powerful leaders impact the success of projects, teams and organizations. Providing leaders with the training to strengthen thinking, communication and management skills will positively impact our organization and employee performance. Transforming people into strong, confident leaders who are prepared to lead our organization's future is one of the goals of leadership development and Teambuilding. We hope to achieve this on Friday during our own Teambuilding and leadership experience!

In my Pediatric Residency Training at SLMCQC we use CAT to appraise journals sir and it is very helpful to us to validate if an article makes sense or worth our time or not.

I am a great believer of the power of Team Building activities in transforming a person. Since the 1990’s when I was introduced to this idea in the corporate world, my life has changed. I used to be an individualist. (I wrote something about this in my previous reflection.) Team building opened the door of communicating well, thinking the unthinkable, and overcoming my timidity in order to socialize. It enhanced my critical thinking as well. I vividly recall how, then, in my 30’s, spontaneously led our team to win in an activity, which was probably an ordinary game to some, but quite mind boggling on the onset. It was preceded by a newspaper dance wherein a couple has to keep standing on a paper that was folded each time, making sure that feet of the couple are always inside the paper, no matter how small it becomes. It was a preconditioning activity that challenged a paradigm shift for a similar activity. The next activity is to make all members per team (a large number) to fit themselves in a small circle, the size of a plate. I was quick to ask all my team members to instead of standing up (for it was impossible to fit in the circle) to…guess what we did and we won! How simple that activity was, and that was almost 25 years ago, and yet, what is unforgettable really is the bonding and kinship it brought about.
For me team building activities lead to discovery of new leaders...and also deepen awareness of one's limitless potentials and gifts.
    Go...go...go Clash Masters!

Just to comment on CAT - My exposure in Quality Circles introduced me to CAT. The Ishikawa, Why-Why Diagram, Force Field Analysis, and Kepner-Tregoe Analysis laid the foundations of my CAT. Surprisingly, when I went through a critical decision making process at a crossroad in life, these tools, together with prayerful discernment were invaluable to me. And to my greater surprise, centuries ago, a holy man, Ignatius of Loyola penned Spiritual Exercises, the heart of which is about deciding on taking a course of action (from two or more alternatives that are all good) – to choose that which one believes is most pleasing to God. I found the parallelism of evaluating the "pros and cons" of alternative courses of action with the Force-Field Analysis. I found St. Ignatius’ “3 times in making a decision”, and “Daily Examen” similar to the Ishikawa, Why-Why Diagram. Thanks to St. Ignatius!
    St. Ignatius, pray for us!

Hi Prof! I began to appreciate the importance of Team Building when we did it two years ago in my previous employer/company because there was really a need then to have one due to the ongoing transition (new management). The company was almost falling apart because of the low morale of the employees. The team building was so successful that the employees were able to recover from demoralization, although there was also a need for follow-through to maintain their high-spirits (hopefully they did it). Team building is very vital in leading people to keep them united, inspired and motivated in attaining company goals. Team buildings are exciting activities. Everyone will surely have a lot of fun and excitement, and get to appreciate our activities on Friday. See you there Prof and fellow leaders!

Hi Prof, agree with you on the team building and I just add on some of the benefit we personally had when we had our team building on which I requested on the reason of (1) build rapport to the team as their new manager (2) improve team's morale that time (3) identify the team's strengths and weaknesses (4) time out for the team after we successfully implemented a new system. We had a lot of fun filled activities on which I explain the reason behind after each activity. After the team building, our team has never been closer, it breaks the invisible ice that previously exists, it opens line of communication, they get to know their teammates more and shoot up our productivity level. I was able to get to know the team, and the team was able to get to know me as well. It brings us closer that started our good working relationship, getting what we call their 'discretionary effort'.

  7. Yes, team building is part of leadership without it leadership will not becomplete. Our team work efforts, time pressure, strategic planning , communication skills will make a winner. It was though physically competitive last Friday but enjoyable because of the closeness. We shared funny, outraging moments. Though I was supposedly the marshal and the medic, I felt so responsible for all. I prepared a lot from BP apparatus , to slings , breathing mask , Betadine, gauze and emergency medicines and a lot of prayer so that no one will get injured. Thank GOd , all went well and also thanks to all and sir for calling off the obstacle game since it was dark and the dengue carrying mosquitoes are ready to attack.
