Movie:  Farther than the Eye Can See 4

Sypnosis
This is a true story about Erik Weihenmayer who was born with retinoscheses, a degenerative eye disorder that would leave him blind by the age of thirteen. But Erik was determined to rise above this devastating disability and lead a fulfilling and exciting life.

In this poignant and inspiring movie, he shares his struggle to push past the limits imposed on him by his visual impairment-and by a seeing world.  He tells the story of his dream to climb the world's highest mountain – Mt. Everest, and how he is turning that dream into astonishing reality.

The story revolves on his journey on his biggest physical challenge which is to reach Mount Everest summit, this is a story about daring to dream in the face of impossible odds. It is about finding the courage to reach for that ultimate summit, and transforming your life into something truly miraculous.

The journey ended with Erik and his team's highly successful ascent of Mount Everest along with four other remarkable milestones on the mountain:

To relate to Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces:
<![if !supportLists]>1)      <![endif]>THE HERO IS INTRODUCED IN HIS ORDINARY WORLD
Erik was born as a normal child with his full eyesight.

<![if !supportLists]>2)      <![endif]>THE CALL TO ADVENTURE

<![if !supportLists]>4)      <![endif]>THE HERO IS ENCOURAGED BY THE WISE OLD OR WOMAN
Ed Weinhenmayer, Erik’s father, wanting him to have a normal life introduces him to mountain climbing.  He joined Erik’s journey up to Base Camp which is the start point of journey to Mt. Everest.  Erik has built a passion for climbing and one day he met PV Scaturro (an expeditioner) which later on led to Erik’s leading their expedition in Mt. Summit

<![if !supportLists]>5)      <![endif]>THE HERO PASSES THE FIRST THRESHOLD
At the Base Camp, Erik and his team gather for planning and include Sherpa on their journey to guide them.

<![if !supportLists]>6)      <![endif]>THE HERO ENCOUNTERS TESTS AND HELPERS

Erik and his teammate started their first trip to ‘Icefall’ to reach Camp 2.  Their first trip took Erik 13 hours on which the sighted climber can take 3 to 5 hours.  He felt disappointed at himself and can hear on his thoughts what others say “You’re out of your league, what are you doing here?”  The team returned to Base Camp to rest and reflects on what happened on the first trip.

<![if !supportLists]>7)      <![endif]>THE HERO REACHES THE INNERMOST CAVE
As Erik and his team comes to ‘Death Zone’ which is right after the Camp 3, they need to get to the summit as fast as they can and get back.  Here they found dead body and as they need summit, it feels they are in the warzone and the weather is not good and the team don’t know when they are going out of oxygen.  In this place he thinks and wonder “What are you doing in this place?”

<![if !supportLists]>8)      <![endif]>THE HERO ENDURES THE SUPREME ORDEAL
As the team sits on their tent near the summit, one of the guy they bumped into the journey enter their camp and without noticing that Erik is around tells his teammates “Well you guys are going to have a hell of a time getting that blind get up there”.

At that time Erik was teary eye, he was fired up and nervous.  He was half thinking “It must be really hard to get up there” and his other half “I’m going to prove him wrong, we’re going to do it!”

One of his teammates PV tells Erik “I know you can do it.  Erik knows he can do it.  I know that he knows he can do it, the guy’s trained up himself.”

<![if !supportLists]>9)      <![endif]>THE HERO SEIZES THE SWORD

<![if !supportLists]>11)   <![endif]>RESURRECTION
When they reached the Summit Erik feels he proved the non-believers that he achieves the almost impossible dream which is to reach the Mt. Everest summit.

<![if !supportLists]>12)   <![endif]>RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR
After Erik’s achievement and his team in Mt. Everest, he was featured in TIME magazine and has inspired a lot of people as they relay their story to the world.

How do I link Erik’s story with my life:
I was previously from Accounting as a Sr. Accountant and just focus on my tasks. I did not handle any people.  I just ensure that I get my job done.  But I have a goal to become a manager, this is one of the reasons I enrolled in AGSB to gain new learning and expand my horizon.  Last year an opportunity opens when the position for Manager Revenue Operations (Finance) was posted internally.  I grab the opportunity and applied for the position.  My Sr. Manager that time is also the hiring manager for the Manager position.  I undergo the normal screening process and ultimately got the position.  My Sr. Manager apparently sees a potential in me, she is aware of my strength and weaknesses and is willing to coach me.  I knew that time the she trust me, she believes in my capabilities that’s why she puts me in this position.  During my first few months as a manager was challenging, from Accountant function I need now to learn the processes of the Revenue Operations department.  This signifies that initially I am ‘blind’ on the process, but from first day when I met my new team I shared with one of my favorite quotes “I am nothing without my sword, and my sword is nothing without me.  So me and my sword stick together because we are more powerful when we are together”.  This highlights how I value the importance of teamwork, that we should act as one to achieve our objective.  On my first few months as a manager, I prioritize and getting to know them, knowing their capabilities, know what motivates them, their family and gain their trust.  Yes, TRUST is a big WORD.  It is the basic foundation of our relationship and would take us a very long way.  I must say there are challenges as a manager.  I have many firsts – first time to interview, first time to give disciplinary action, first time to conduct team meeting with my team, first time to give performance appraisal and many first.  There are times that I think “Do I really have what it takes to be in this position?” when I encounter challenges and feel down.  But as a manager I need to pick up myself immediately, the team counts on me and I need to be strong since this is what I want in the first place.  Most importantly, my Sr. Manager believes in me, the team believes in me and I know I believe in myself.  Therefore, I know I can do it!

Now I apply manager and leadership skills.  Plan, organize, staff, direct and motivate, inspire, get the job done, share the vision, empower, seek innovation, develop, build trust and good relationship.  These skills go hand in hand.  I can see good signs that my team likes the way I handle them, recently we have anonymous survey which is done every year.  This survey will be answered by my team to rate me as their manager and the results shows very good for a first time manager like me J  And the team has been meeting our key metrics and came out as the Best Performing Team and Best Improvement Team among APAC country.

Erik’s story gives me so much inspiration with his can do attitude.  If I believe in myself, there is nothing impossible.  Great lessons I learned is choosing the right people, keeping the goal in sight, understanding sacrifice, discovering your inner leader, finding joy in the success of others, overcoming immense setbacks and believing in the dream.  I am just starting with my life and I am up for more challenges.

“Leadership is full of challenges, frustrations and disappointments because you can never satisfy everybody at all times.”
