Cebu Leadership - Call to Arms/Action Speech by Leader Lt Commander Andre Ladan

prof submitted is my speech for tomorrow.

Regis Leadership Cebu
Leader Andre Ladan

I'll be talking about security for today and how it impacts our daily lives. You might be asking if it is indeed my advocacy, it is. I've been helping friends out whose business operations have outgrown their respective administrative services, I provide a sort of a bridge so that their security could cope up with their operational requirements.
So what is security? The dictionary says it is freedom from fear and anxiety, others say it is a state of being protected. How about you? How do you define it? What do you know about security? Is security the guy who brings out the umbrella as you leave your office lobby under a torrential rain? Is it the one who opens your car door and greets you in the morning? Or the perennial bag inspection by someone who doesn't even know what the crap he or she is looking for?
Sadly that is how we view security, while business owners view of security can be explained by a story wherein the owner of a multinational company met all his security executives. He was asking them how to improve their security, a lot of the guys in the front were asking for more cctv cameras, others more biometrics, some more guards. As the owner was pacing the aisle back and forth a young security manager at the back was whispering to his seatmate saying, " you know we could improve security without actually spending". The boss suddenly blurted, "who's that bright boy at the back?"
That is because we view security as a cost not as a system or a process. We do not realize that it is as important as your finance, logistics, operations and HR departments. If one will take a look closely we can see that security measures are present in all departments. We do investigations for potential hires and promotable individuals, we create SOP's for plant operations to ensure security, we organize committees to evaluate procurement processes and prevent pilferage and graft. We conduct audit for our finances. These are all security measures designed to prevent loss, protect the assets and mitigate risks.
In our personal lives technology has become so ingrained in our daily fabric that it is unthinkable to exist without them. Gadgets have become an extension of ourselves and our link to society. The sad part is, this is the place where we are most vulnerable. Cyber security is not only for our workplaces, it is for us. The threat of viruses corrupting our files, malwares and hackers trespassing into our devices are only some of the cyber threats that are real. We could become victims of social engineering and fall prey to identity thieves. It is in this line that we should practice good security habits. Do install legit OS to avail of patches that addresses bugs and glitches.  Protect and regularly change your passwords, seek additional protection like firewalls and anti-viruses, back up and encrypt your files and secure your immediate area before leaving.
But were you convinced? Probably not… why? Because it is not personal. People have an inexplicable desire to be burned before they learn. It is when we're bitten that we become twice as shy. Let's make it personal then…
