MM LEADER REFLECTION PAPER 2 Internal and External Factors that Shaped me by LeaderJermits G. Rabonza

Magandang araw Prof.Jorge! Itong panulat ay tawag-dugtong sa unang reflection paper na tutulay sa mga susunod kabanata  ng buhay ko

External - what are family, environment school and work experience that shaped you today?

Makatapos ng ilang kontrata sa pagwo-working student ay nakatapos din ako ng kolehiyo nuong 2002 sa kursong Advertising and Public Relations. Masaya ako pagka't magigiling mas makabuluhan ang buhay papunta sa pagta-trabaho. Makakapag-ambag ako sa pagtataguyod ng pamilya.

Klaro sa akin ito.
Then comes the hard part. Looking for my first work.

Naging bahagi ako ng isang retail company noong 2002. Naging simple at kuntento sa mga unang sabak sa corporate world. Hindi madali pero nagbukas ng maraming opportunity ng paglago sa karera. Hindi nagtagal nagkaroon ako ng pagkakataon na lumipat bilang medpre sa isang pharmaceutical company.

OUTBASE.
After completing the corporate sales training, nagtapos ako bilang top ng klase. Hindi ko man inasahan, na-assign ako ng Central Luzon-- sa Tarlac. Probinsiya. Waw! Ang layo. Di pa kasi tapos ang TPLEX nun. So it would take 3-4 hours going back to Manila. Pero sige. Laban. I got a place in the city and dun nagsimula ang isa sa pinakamasayang bahagi ng karera ko sa sales.

Being independent for the first time in my life, marami akong bagong karanasan.
-          Unang nagka-kotse at magmaneho ng malalayong lugar ng probinsiya.
-          Unang makakausap ng propesyunal doctor, engineer, nurse, etc. Naging kaibigan ko pa rin ang mga ito kahit nasa Maynila at ibang trabaho nako.
-          Unang naranasang kumota (syempre incentives). Pagtapos nung una, parang hindi na masyadong nasundan J
-          Unang nagkaroon ng maraming kaibigan mula sa iba't ibang background. Karamihan ng mga medrep sa Tarlac ay mga taga Maynila rin kaya magkukumpul-kumpol yan pag nasa ibang lugar.

Hindi nagging madali ang "letting go process" when I left the AstraZeneca in 2007. 4 years in Tarlac,  being independent, gaining new friends, earning a steady income and doing this in a place I considered second home are important things early in my career that I will always cherish.

Outbase assignment happened again when I moved to Pfizer. Nung una sa Quezon City ako pero na-relocate ako sa Isabela. Waw! Mas malayo! Nonetheless, I thrived. I survived.

Para magtrabaho sa malayong lugar, katulad ng pag-oOFW ay kailangan ng sakripisyo.
These are awesome experiences I will never forget.

Internal -  your values, strength, weakness and how do they effect on how you decide act

Strengths
1.       Self-starter, hardworking, creative.

Given the life and work experiences, my core strengths are really from ground up. I don't mind starting from scratch. Mangyari na ang orientation ko ay "work and grow with what you have." Naging malikhain din ako sa maraming pagkakataon.

2.       People-person, develop self and others
Nakalutong ang maraming sales competency training para maging masaya at genuine ang pakikitungo sa iba't-ibang tao, sa iba't-ibang larangan na nasa malawak na katayuan sa buhay. People skills are something we learned overtime- given the right mentor and development tools, we can make leadership more functional as we develop ourselves and soon, yung susunod na mga leaders.
3.       I play to win!
Sabi dun sa enneagram ko, ako ay helper and achiever. Masarap balikan na ang hardwork at people skills na may humility ang mag-propel sa karera natin sa mas mataas na antas. Tumutulong ka sa iba hind para sa pang-sariling interes kundi pagbuo ng mga bagong relationships that will enrich personal and career development. Hindi ako likas na competitive pero gusto ko manalo! Palagi.

Weaknesses
1.       Tends to forget details.

Sa bilis ng panahon ngayon at sa dami ng impormasyon sa iba't ibang platforms- hindi maiiwasan may makalimutan ka. Ngunit ang pagiging sharp sa detalye ay makakatulong lalo na sa corporate set-up. Sisimulan ko ito sa mga pangalan. I would not want to miss anyone who I meet and build relationships with.

2.       Quick but smart decision making skills
This is a work in progress. Nasa programa ako ngayon sa 3M na mentee ako ng senior VPs. Great leaders make tough (calculated) decisions.

Take the case of the J&J issue on Tylenol
(lifted from the book, The Greatest Business Decisions Of All Time)

When Johnson & Johnson learned that bottles of it's Tylenol being sold in Chicago had been laced with cyanide and had left seven dead. CEO James Burke snapped into action. At the time the FBI was recommending against a recall to avoid panic during Halloween. Even so, Burke had his company pull of the shelves every bottle of the painkiller nationally and designed a taper-proof bottle- all at the cost of $ 100 million. Burke lived by the credo that a leader's responsibility was to those who use Johnson and Johnson products and services. The way he handled the tragedy became a textbook case for crisis management- Reveal everything you know fast and do everything necessary to take care of your customers.

Clear understanding and acceptance of what are my ups and flaws constantly give me
guidance on how to approach personal and career changes.
3.       How do they prepare you for your future challenges.

Here are the 3 things that emulates my attitude towards challenges:

1.       Take a deep breath. Don't' let an issue big or small swallow you whole. At the end of the day, I should be clear what is the end in mind. If that is the case, evaluate and mitigate.
This is true having experienced a lot in my early life. Steady lang.

2.       Don't be afraid to raise your hand and shout help! This is a good application of humility. I don't know everything and I don't have all the answers. I always submit myself to mentoring and coaching processes. When in doubt, ask.

3.       Nothing beats the perfect effort. Based on my previous entry- movie synopsis.

SELF-REFLECTION
1.       What is the new learning?

Para akin nagging makabuluhan ang provincial assignments sa trabaho dahil marami siyang naituro
sa akin:
-          Humility. Hindi porke't nasa multi-national ka at taga-Maynila ka ay automatic na ang tagumpay. Lahat ay may puhunan ng sipag at diskarte. Sa tingin ko meron ako pareho.
-          Pakikipag-kapwa tao. Iba't ibang tao sa diversed background sa magkabilang antas ng pamumuhay. Tinuruan ako makisalamuha at makipag-kaibigan sa maraming personalidad na tumugon sa pangangailangan ko ng linangin ang pagkatao ko.
-          Sipag. Hindi madali maging ahente sa malayong lugar. Kailangan ng energy and dedikasyon para maglakbay at magmaneho ng 6 na oras na susunod kong contact point. Then repeat.


2.       What is the relation to what I already know?

The exercise teaches me to revisit the past, connecting the dots. Malaki talaga ang kinalaman ng nakaraan para matuklasan mo na ito ang dahilan kung nasaan ka ngayon.

Being leaders, it's really knowing yourself more. You're core as a person. Though this only we can be clear of our vision moving forward.


3.       What have I done, am doing, will be doing for this topic?

At this point of my personal leadership reflection, I think about coming to terms with my inner self. That the instance I decided to lead is something that culminates the marriage of internal and external forces that shaped me. I am clear about my mission and I am committed to reach the end in mind. I have been aware of what I am good at and those I need to develop. Eventually embrace that duty to do the right thing in life and career. All of these reflections are put to waste if we do not assess our faith.

Putting God and service (family, work and community) above all is a lifelong journey, I maybe on my first few rides but I think I'm learning to come to terms with myself and eliminate what is unnecessary.
