School loses PAASCU Accreditation? Is this confirmed? Can this affect your business education and degree?

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Philippines,  December 30, 2015

Top business leaders in Pampanga with the Professor

It is the 119th death anniversary of  Dr Jose Rizal, the acclaimed national hero, and a foremost alumnus  And today, I have been seeing a lot of posts and criticisms on loss of  PAASCU  (loss na ba talaga? Is the news accurate.  I searched the net for the news and there was none) accreditation for distinguished GSB. A former student in Clark texted me her concern on the hearsays and grapevine news on the possible withdrawal of the said accreditation. She is on Special Program, and is worried that she may not get the  diploma from abroad  or that the  Program will be discontinued.?

PAASCU accreditation of the  University

Brief History  PAASCU accreditation

The school applied for accreditation in 2004 and was accredited in 2010.  I was all ready a part time faculty at that time (and still is ) and we participated in the process.  It was a long and tedious process.   Now as to the loss of accreditation, from my limited knowledge, the school management could have not complied or stalledto comply with several things that are necessary for the re accreditation.  We do not exactly know what happened as to why these things were not attended to.

The question to be raised here are:

1. Prior to 2010, was the quality education lesser compared to 2010 or after?

2.  Did more students enroll after 2010 due to PAASCU accreditation?

3.  Was the foreign school program running prior to PAASCU accreditation.?

Why despite robust economic growth, poverty is still prevalent in the Philippines?

We wish a happy and prosperous 2016 New Year to every one.  Many Filipinos are hopeful that 2016 will be better.

Why is this question relevant to AGSB Leaders?  Well our mantra in AGSB  is nation building,  If we are to be building a nation, poverty has to be reduced if not eliminated.

Why are we poor? From Manila Times

From Philippine pride - 10 reasons why Philippines is still a poor country   This article places the responsibility of being poor on the individual.  Poverty is a matter of personal choice

From Prof Ciel Habito of Ateneo de Manila
Poverty reduction by 50%  is one of the key  goals of UN  Millineum Development Goals. This was missed by the PHL observes Prof Ciel  Habito, professor of economics at Ateneo de Manila University. It is said that for every 1% growth in GDP, there is a corresponding decrease in poverty level.  While the Philippines has achieved an average growth of 4.5 % from 2004 to 2009, poverty incidence grew to 26.5%, the number of poor families increased by 185,000 and high school participation decreased.

What are the reasons?

1.  There is no inclusiveness in the grwoth, only 1% of the population controls 60% of the GDP.  What could be behind this?  Lack of taxation?  Govt control?

2.  The jobs are mostly from BPO, gambling  and technology but which are not linked to other areas of economy.  Thus the job creation can not support nor solve the 6.5 unemployment and 20% under employment.  The jobs from the service sector (say SM or other retail establishments even BPO and gambling are not permanent, and thus can not promise sustained employment and security

Prof Habito proposes 5 measures to reduce poverty:

1.  Focus on MSME (I was right on having this as an advocacy and teaching this for the last 13 years, being engaged in probono talks of Go Negosyo, free lessons on Entrep blog)

2.  Competition policy  (The govt has not been keen in discouraging monopolies and giant companies that stifle grwoth as in telecom)

3.  Human development (education, and pursuits like this Leadership development

4.  Asset reform

5.  Sector industry inclusive growth.  The best way is to develop manufacturing as a generator of jobs ( or even agriculture

Cebu Regis Leadership Genogram by Ivy Eleanor Ko

Dear Professor Jorge

I am submitting my genogram paper
sorry i was not able to submit on time
Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Cebu Regis Leadership Genogram by Ivy Eleanor Ko

I.             Genogram – Dissecting my Family Tree

A.   Grandparents' (Father Side)

The Uy-Yap clan is very small compared to the families during their generation. A lot of their relatives were still in China. Moreover, they were born during the WWII era, thus life was not easy. Ham Chiong and Yap Tin were originally from China, they met and married in Cebu. Ham Chiong ventured into several businesses to support his family while Yap Tin managed the household. Growing up, Papa said that Angkong is the spoiler, while Ama is the disciplinarian.

My paternal grandfather, (Angkong), Uy Ham Chong is the eldest in a family of 2 children. I was not able to meet my Angkong, but I know he was very hardworking and loving. I can see this with my dad and his siblings.

(1)     Ham Chong: Ang Kong arrived Cebu at the age of 4 to escape the harsh life in Amoy, China, together with his parents. He was only able to finish highschool education. To be able to support his family, he did all sorts of job from being a salesman, to producing firecrackers and eventually building misua factory. Most of his business does not prosper due to his lack of business acumen, generosity and good naturedness. He died due to complications bought about by diabetes and heart condition.

(2)   Valerio: Valerio is the adopted brother of Ham Chiong. Though he was never able finish college, his interest in radio and parts motivated him to complete schooling thru correspondence certification exams. This enabled him to operate a big radio and electronics store in the city. He married Betty, and has only one child, Derrick.

Papa's mother, Yap Tin, is the second child amongst a family of 5 children. According to my aunt, Ama's siblings are born with health problems that is why they did not live for long. Ama is very artistic, a good cook, and very fashionable. I just learned her parents had a cloth store when they were younger.

Pity these children;  what if you were like this when you were young?

Merry Christmas to everyone.  How we wish all people of the world were happy. They are not. 1.3 billion of them, or 1/3 of the world population are hungry and as we saw in Chicken A La Carte, video, 19,000 die daily from hunger.  How we wish this would not happen.  We are supposed to have as our mandate, taking all Gods creation, including our fellow men.

I hope these articles resonate with our passion/mission (RP3) or that it would be a part of that mission

Sometimes the food vendors are to be blamed for this loss;  lack of
merchandising and pricing skills;  wrong estimate of how much can be sold
or pricing the food out of the reach of many.  Farmers on the other hand

What would happen to the Presidential bid of Sen Grace Poe? Can Comelec disqualify her?

'Quamplurimi et quam aptissimi" (As many as possible of the very best)

Rizal Philippines
December 24, 2015

In two hours time, it is going to be Merry Christmas, at least for those who can afford to have noche buena. For 40% of the Philippine population, may be not so happy.  They can be happy by just being positive.

And for Sen Grace Poe who was "disqualified" from running as President;  it could not be any sadder. (Pero dapat naghintay pa siya ng isang term)

From Filosofo Tasyo - Can Comelec Disqualify Sen Poe as  Presidential Candidate?

But legally speaking, and strictly speaking, she could not be disqualified by Comelec under Section 12 and 68 of the Election code but rather "petitioned to deny due course under Section 78.

This was stated earlier by former Comelec Commissioner and now retired Sixto Brilliantes in an interview with host Karen Davila at ANC.  (His position  though is seen as biased.  He is an election lawyer and is consulted by camps of Grace Poe and and Rodrigo Duterte, and is biased vs. Mar Roxas)

Only the Presidential Electoral Tribunal may disqualify Poe.   Comelec can not disqualify Sen Poe and under such conditions only as insanity (the lady from Iloilo maybe) incompetence, and conviction of a crime especially of rebellion, insurrection and the like

The issue of disqualification of Sen Poe is going to be long and complicated one.  As of the moment, the laws of Comelec and the opposing opinion may still favor Sen Poe.  The law may still favor her, if there is such thing as justice and fairness remaining in our govt system.

I think she should be given a chance to pursue her candidacy for President as she was granted that right as Senator.

Merry Christmas to present and future leaders

Re: Cebu Regis Leader Reflection Paper #2 - Internal and External Factors that Shaped me by Leader Ivy Eleanor U Ko

Hi Prof,

Resending my revised reflection paper #2
Thank you for the opportunity to revise.

Have a great weekend!

Cebu Regis Leader Reflection Paper #2 -  Internal and External Factors that Shaped me by Leader Ivy Eleanor U Ko

External - what are family, environment, school and work experience that shaped you today?

I am the second among 4 female siblings. You can imagine how we make Papa's world go round with 5 ladies (6 if you include my Ama) at home. The house is never boring with 4 active and inquisitive daughters who share similar topics of interests. The four of us siblings share almost everything, from books to clothes to even friends which made my social circle very big! Since papa was always on travel, we don't have a male companion at home, so the 4 of us siblings learned to be each other's sense of security and independent at a young age. This made our bond very solid, that we know we have each other's back on times of need.
There is an unspoken agreement that if we grow up and have our respective families, we know we can depend on each other to take care of our kids.

While growing up, I am closest to my Eldest sister, who I call Atsi. She wants to be the "leader" in almost everything. She has experienced most activities ahead of us being the first one to start almost everything. I enjoy listening to her teaching and sharing with us her learnings and adventures. So almost always, family occasions were never boring as we have each other to keep us company. We never ran out of things to do or topics to discuss. When she got married and went to live in Sydney and started her own family, the family dynamics she left certainly changed as our "leader" has transferred base. Missing one sibling was a new feeling for all of us, as everyone grew up together in Cebu. There were opportunities that were offered for me to join her in Sydney, so I can try living outside the comforts of home, but I ignored all these as I prefer to stay with Papa and Mama, enjoyed my work and I have my social network in Cebu. Having travelled for work, I always look forward to going home, so I know living away from home is something I would not enjoy for long.

Another person who has anchored me to base is Ama. I've remember seeing her enjoy simple things in life. She loves to cook and keep the house spic and span. She is very close to her children whom she calls almost everyday to check on how they and their family are. She is very caring, and never forgets the birthdays of her grandchildren. She is generous, yet very strict. For her, you have to be home before meal times, and take your responsibility of a parent seriously. You must walk the talk and lead by example. I feel very lucky to have grown up in the same house as her and saw the sides of her that none of my cousins saw. I could say I got some values and traits from her, especially my sense of responsibility.

At work, I grew the wings I never knew I had before. Being financially independent enabled me to be more generous with myself, buy and enjoy the things that I want without being too budget conscious. I got to travel, see and explore the world. Experiencing to lead and manage a team taught me to plan, to organize, to lead, to communicate, and to motivate.  Planning, Organizing, and Communicating is very important to be able to convey to the team the organizational expectations and relay to them how the team is faring. Are we near our target? What did we do right or wrong? How do we correct ourselves and achieve our goal? I also learned that there is no one size fits all approach in managing an employee, most especially the high potential ones. Feedback is very important. Being a friend, and finding a good friend at work is vital.

Being sent on trips for work has been a blessing. Yes, it is difficult to be travelling all the time, but as long as you still enjoy it, you will learn a lot from it. You will also get to have more things done rather than just following things up with your counterpart on email or videoconferences. I got to experience all types of travel, be it land, sea, or air. Sometimes, when I get lucky, I get to have the same trip arrangements with the boss. Yes, it is sometimes stressful to travel with the boss, but the benefits further outweighs the costs. You get to have first class treatment, you observe and learn the way they travel, your get to see the other side of them. These are the things not everyone has the chance to do. Of course, it's not all the time you talk about work, but you also share stories on personal lives. I got to learn a lot of stuffs on how to succeed in life from my former bosses during the numerous travels we've done together.

Now that I am on my own, and do consultancy with SME's, I have encountered different personalities and their different approaches on how business owners manage their business and handle their people. This is a new experience for me as I have been used to dealing with higher level management, but with this time, it's more of like multi-tasking for all levels of the organization. Yes, all the skills I've learned in the past is very useful, but this time, EQ, patience and humility is much more needed to get things to work. And yes, because I get to have my own time and my own boss, I am very happy to how things are playing out to be.

These are awesome some experiences I will never forget.

Internal  -  your values, strength, weakness and how do they affect on how you decide act

Values

1. Willingness to help people
Being the type 2 Helper that I am, I always enjoy helping people who asks for assistance. When I train, I am not selfish and I don't keep secrets. I share everything that has made me to where I am today. I always believe that the best measure of success is when you see your team and subordinates succeed in their own fields.  It is my happiness to see people I've trained succeed, and this is something I want to do as long as I can.

2. Integrity
Once I commit to something, I do it with passion. I always search for better ways of doing things, don't accept mediocrity, but constantly challenge status quo.

3. Frugality
At an early age, I saw my mom being very cost conscious in all activities at home, thus she is also very resourceful in ensuring family budget is enough and save for rainy days. I've carried the same principle while growing up, until working and have my own family. I often frown when I see too much lavishness, especially if expenses does not come from their own pocket. I am amazed at how rich business tycoons with the likes of Warren Buffet and John Gokongwei keep a very simple lifestyle despite the wealth they have amassed.

Strengths

1. Competent, and works effectively
I don't mind starting from scratch to be able to get things done. In my opinion, getting the feedback from the ground up is one way to get the accurate information.  I pay equal attention to peers' and superiors' information to be able to get things done. When I need to work on something, I put my full time and attention to it, giving importance every to the minutest detail.

2. Cheerful, approachable, and upbeat
Being friendly and charming enables you to get difficult things done, from getting a parking space in a full car park, obtaining a meeting schedule with the bosses' jam packed calendar from his executive secretary, to surviving traveling alone (and befriending a hunk in the plane who ended to become my husband), and most especially being the youngest member in a tough Archaic ExCom. If you can talk to all levels of the organization, initiatives will be fast tracked, communication and feedback will be more efficient, and of course, you achieve your growth faster.

3. Ability to see the big picture
As much as I can, I keep myself updated, research, read the news, learn what is going on. I enjoy being aware of the general and fundamental information of things. I guess this also comes in complement with the Financial acumen I have learned over the length of my career. It is easy for me to come up with a story out of financial statements, and I enjoy doing detailed analysis as the need arises.

Reflection Paper 2: Internal and External Factors that Shaped Me

EXTERNAL – WHAT ARE FAMILY, ENVIRONMENT, SCHOOL AND WORK EXPERIENCES HAS SHAPED YOU TODAY?

In family:  Considering I am the second out of nine children, it was my very first experience of being a leader. Being a leader to my 7 younger siblings, was a sweet memory for me. I was leading with all my sincerity, dedication and love to my young brothers and sisters. Since grade two I learned to prepare meals for them. For eight years boy, cooking for the family was a big deal already. As we grow up I gained the trust and confidence of my brother and sisters at the same I taught them my skills in sports, such as Karate, Kickboxing, Track & Field and Swimming. It was a very memorable for me as a young leader.
In school:  It was a big challenge for my parents to find time to help me and my siblings with our lessons in school. My father and mother are doing their best to provide just enough for the basic needs of our family. I truly believe that adversaries can us strong. As young as eight years old I cook foods for my younger siblings and to study by myself.
Because I was friendly and somehow cute in graders I became the class prince charming almost every school year, but soon I move to high school my classmates and teachers gradually discovered my leadership ability. The prince charming became the class president every school year and at the same time I exceled in sports activities and won plenty of medals in track and fields, in swimming and dominated in Karate-do and Kick Boxing in my own category.
At work: It's been nine years since I submitted my resignation as Regional Associate Manager in LDS Employment Resource Services (ERC), under Church Welfare Department. My engagement in LDS-ERC was indeed very colorful and fruitful. Until now I can still feel the great excitement that I felt during those years of special moments in Reaching, Teaching and Coaching all our volunteers, clients, and partners in achieving success.

Regis Cebu Leadership Genogram – “My Family Tree” by Leader Juvelon Abante

Regis Cebu Leadership Genogram – "My Family Tree" by Leader Juvelon Abante
I.             My Family Tree
A.   Father Side (Grandparents)

My Grandfather from my Father Side originally comes from Mindoro Province. According to my relatives, most of the Abante Clan originated from Mindoro then eventually have transferred to Bauan Batangas.
i)                    Lolo Durungao – I am not familiar with the real name of my Lolo's Brother, but as I recall it right I call him Lolo Durungao because he is from Durungao, Batangas. I often see him when we are visiting Batangas during the Christmas Holiday Season. According to my Father, he is a businessman and of public service.
ii)                  Teodulo Abante (My Dad's Father) – My Lolo Dolo as they call him is a graduate of commerce. He died when I was just 2 years old that is why I don't have memories to recall for my Lolo. But according to my Lola, Lolo Dolo is very strict when it comes to parenting. This is where my Father inherits his style of parenting to us.
i)        Concepcion Abante (My Dad's Mother) – My Lola Asyon as they fondly called him is still alive at the age of 85 as of this writing. I have a lot of good memories with my Grandmother because she is the one who takes care of us whenever we visit Batangas during our childhood. Lola Asyon is very religious and a devoted catholic, she always reminds us to attend masses. When I was a kid, my Lola always brings me to the "Flores de Mayo" during the month of May. We were assigned to lead the celebration in the church.
ii)      Lola Belen – Lola Belen is the sister of Lola Asyon. The first time I met Lola Belen when I was in 8 years old. I remember that during this first meeting, she invited me to a lunch on their house because she will cook tinolang manok. I also see that my Lola Belen is close to my Father Rusty. My Dad will always visit Lola Belen whenever we had a time to have a vacation in Batangas.

B.   Mother Side (Grandparents)
My Grandparents from my mother side can trace its roots on Dumaguete and Mabinay, Negros Oriental. My Lolo Ben is from Mabinay while my Lola Puring is from Dumaguete.
i)                    Benjamin Diones (My Mom's Father) – My Grandfather Lolo Ben is a graduate of Education from Siliman University. Just like my Lolo Dolo, he also died while I was still a kid. I think I just turn 1 year old when my Lolo Ben dies. According to my Mom, he dies because of Lung Cancer. He was a heavy smoker and drinker. He is a Teacher and School Prinicipal in Mabinay Elementary School.
ii)                  Lolo Toting – Lolo Toting graduated as a lawyer in Foundation University in Dumaguete. As I remember him, he was like a Politician whenever I see him speaks during our gathering. According to my Mom, he inherits these from my Great Grandparent who is formerly a mayor of Mabinay.
iii)                Lolo Lording – Lolo lording is a graduate of Siliman University as a Laboratory Technician. I did not have a chance to meet Lolo Lording before he dies because they are living in Australia.
i)                    Purificacion Adanza (My Mom's Mother) – Lola Puring is also a teacher just like my Lolo Ben. She is a school teacher in Zamboanguita Negros Oriental. As I recall my childhood memories, my Lola Puring host us whenever we visit Negros during summer vacation.  Lola Puring becomes the immediate guardian of 2 of my cousins because my Aunt died when my cousin was still a kid. My Lola puring died of heart failure last 2010.
ii)                  Exequiel Adanza – Captain Adanza as most of his colleagues call him is a graduate of PMMA. He serves as a Navy after graduation at Sangley Point Naval Base in Cavite. He eventually transfers to private as a seaman and became captain of the ship before he retires.

A.   Grandfather (Father's Side)

My grandfather on my father's side, Antonio Reyes Montinola, Sr., <related to Amon Trading?> is the eldest of three siblings. I do not know much about my great-grandparents because my grandfather eloped with my grandmother from Iloilo a few years before WWII. All I know is that my great-grandparents were wealthy landlords in Iloilo and Bacolod but squandered most of their inheritance through gambling and excessive spending. My grandfather was in his early twenties when he secretly married my grandmother who was just seventeen years old at that time and brought her to Cebu City to raise their family.

I. Papang Tony was a successful businessman, dedicated father and loving grandfather. He was an undergraduate of UST and married early. He spoke Ilonggo even when he already lived many years in Cebu. Papang was very athletic. He used to be a member of his school's swimming team. He was very handsome and had many admirers when he was young. But after he met my grandmother, he completely changed and became a devoted husband and father to their 5 children.

He was very passionate about his hobbies, which were fishing and taking pictures. Papang would bring his family to the beach in Talisay every Sunday. He had a pumpboat named Evenrude and I as told that he would often bring his sons for a ride under the Mactan Bridge. He taught many of his grandchildren how to fish which was very difficult to do as little children because we were always excited and making noises.

Papang loved to take pictures. He had the most modern cameras and equipment for taking photographs during the early sixties. He would give   photos in elegant frames to our relatives as birthday and Christmas gifts.

Papang Tony was also very religious. Together with my grandmother, they attended mass daily.  My grandparents were very close to the Carmelite sisters. Aside from financial support, I believe it was my grandfather's time and volunteer work as sound system operator that made the Carmelite sisters appreciate him more. My best memory of Papang Tony was that he was really a family man.

Papang was never the type who would complain about his health. So when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, we were all caught by surprise that the cancer had spread and there was nothing we could do about it. He became bed-ridden and was given palliative care. Papang passed away on December 26, 1995, the day my elder sister got married. We knew he wanted to attend the ceremony and that was the only way he could be present at the wedding.
