What do you think of current emphasis of MBA?

Reading the article, I was surprised that the least of skills required was related to management/managerial.
On second thought, it made sense now I am knowing this survey and relating it to my past experience in the business.

Way back in 2010, when I first helped my husband in our grocery business, I can still remember focusing on the skills related to managerial. I entered the scene with only 27 employees without stable system and procedure. I would often stay inside the office and do paper works while conceptualizing added or enhanced system/procedure which I can implement in the business (TECHNICAL and MANAGERIAL). This is what my first six months in the business looks like.

Implementation of new rules and regulations to old employees (employees passed down to our management by my husband's parents) was never easy. It came to a point where we lost almost all tenured employees. I felt I was the 'monster' in the store that time, trying to change the culture.

Considering finances, I focused on training incapable and unqualified employees to reach their leadership potentials. I facilitated seminars and training related to LEADERSHIP and TEAMWORK. Now, I can say that I still am not satisfied with what we have become. With almost 7 grocery branches, 5 distribution facility, 300+ employees, and new business ventures, I am convinced that we can still do better in terms of honing our skills thus, I am taking my MBA currently.

Just a few months ago, I invested on my COMMUNICATION skills. It takes too much of my time just be physically present to communicate with our people. I have to give my mind and my time to listen and converse with them in such a way that there will be improvements and alignments in everything we do in the business. When I said I invested on my communication skills, I mean dropping other workloads to give way in communicating with the key people in the business. With just a few months of doing this, I saw great results of motivation and alignment among our teams/people.

In addition to my experience, I started a manpower service business as a result of our grocery business. After a year in my new business venture, we almost have 700 employees now. With this achievements, I always see to it that our key people are fired up with inspiring stories from our experiences and that they too can do the same if only they will help better/improve themselves each day. Communication is a powerful tool to put into action the leader's vision, no wonder it is the most important skill companies look for from MBA graduates. If you will be an outsider of a company, it really takes a skill to communicate to your team the company's vision, mission and goals.

I can say that you can give more of a value in the company if you personally strive to have those skills emphasized in MBA. I have been striving to change my lifestyle, my work attitude, my perception and what can be changed in me. I may not have grown the business (of course with the help of everyone) if I have not grown from within. MBA will greatly help me see myself through others (my classmates and professors). I can compare my ways with their approaches and with that, I may have wisdom I may use to myself and eventually I can impart to others.

Having said all of these, I am very grateful to know that the current emphasis of MBA are the following:
   1.  Communication skills
   2.  Teamwork
   3.  Leadership
   4.  Technical
   5.  Managerial

As stated by Alexander the Great, "I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion". That's why I believe that I need to train my pride and if I have an army of sheep, I would be the lion that will impart those skills to reach our business goal.

This is my first subject in Ateneo MBA and I am looking forward to know much more about an MBA skills.

Thank you.

  1. Hi thanks for sharing in relation to the article what companies look for MBA grads. The emphasis of course of MBA is managerial technical skills....As you correctly pointed out with your experience, listening and ABE (always be explaining) takes precedence over all other competencies of a leader. Congratulations for taking this as the first subject. You may not need to take other subjects in so far as your business leadership is concerned (joke only)
