First Session of Ateneo Leadership Class

Authentic Leadership

July 5, 2015

The early bird was Anne Boise (pronounced Beyse) and Dra Suzette.  The former prepared coffee for me and the latter gave me pasalubong from Baguio (where the ObGynes just had a convention)

It was a full lhouse (27 enrolled) and most had had supervisory and managerial positions..  But the big question is :  are they all leaders.  As we ordinarily understand this, or in accordance with Ignatian leadership

Upon the request of many, the learning agreement was taken down from the site.   Privacy issue.  I decided we will have just hard copy instead.

What took most of the class time was the personal introduction and personal journey/stories on leadership.  This took 7:30 up to 10:50.   Well, this is the best time to experience learn of authentic leadership.  I kept on repeating saying that leadership is best transmitted/transferred to others by telling stories.

Most had great expectation that the professor would teach them how to better leaders.  I had done my part by providing the materials this blog and having them come together to have conversations.  The rest would have to come from them as they discover themselves, land ask themselves how to be better.  I told them that the role of the prof (or Lecturer as we are are really called at AGSB) is to be steerer or the facilitator.  In my MBA days, I told, I did not learn much from my Profs/Lecturer.  I learned more from my peers

.We did a debate on how leaders start:   born, made, or situational.... It was a very provocative way to start the class, as the thoughts on the debate kept coming back as they told their stories on leadership.

What did I remember:  the superwomen, the  Dr. George who underwent a gamma ray survgery and soon after had to see patients post op, the  student who heads talent pool of 2,000 employees, the lady who started her own company who now has 700 employees and seven branches just in one years time.I recall  Bien, the licensed embalmer.  Josh who used to make balls but now sheaths for hotdogs
Congratulations everyone.  Great Leaders.

I ended the class by saying:

1.  We are talking about the conventional leadership and much much more especially about leadership of those who do not have formal titles of leadership.   We talk about dsy to day ordinary leadership of most people (Gage clearly pointed out that everybody cant be the guy who is on top.  We cant have large organizations beneath us etc)

2.  By default, all of us are leaders as our actions affect other people.  We must be responsible for our actions (hence the opening song of Pananagutan)

3.  Our actions beliefs and convictions have value to other people and we must be conscious and aware of who we are and what we do (hence the call for self awareness)

4.  The task is not just developing ourselves as leaders but developing more leaders.  Hence it very admireable taht students have advocacy of developing youtth leaders (or aleast their companies)

I think it was a great start.  Thanks everyone for your active and enthusiastic participation in class.

Thank you Ane and Dra. Suzette
