Final integrative paper by Janelle Ann Pineda - Bansil

Final Integrative paper
When I first knew that leadership will be the subject to be enrolled, I got the feeling of excitement and enthusiasm. I felt the need to attend the class since my exposure to leadership concept is very little.
Honestly, I am expecting more on theoretical and conventional way because my concept of leadership is simply being a leader. Little did I know that leadership is unique in all sense. This paper will elaborate more on the effect of leadership that were drawn not on the book but the actual accomplishment of the course had provided. It will be easier to summarized all technical terms yet this integrative paper will elaborate the deeper understanding brought by the course.

First session- The introduction part of each student interest me, because I've learned how diverse our class is. People who are into different field like medical doctors, entrepreneurs, accountants, engineers, etc. were with me.

Then debate of leaders. Leaders were asked to defend their proposition. First, leaders are born, second leaders were transformed and thirds, leaders are situational. I had difficulties expressing my opinion since my own concept of leadership belongs to "leaders are made and not born". All groups have express their different sides and able to explain each point. And my main conclusion is to introduce the class about authentic leadership.
Authentic leaders knows who they are, know what they believe in and value, and are open to accept ideas from others. They put others first and do not take opportunities for themselves. They lead by example and especially can inspire others to become a leader too.

Second session- the groupings of the class. We were asked to perform Bad Boss. I had exposure with 4 different people. My group mates and I had our meeting and suddenly we all agreed to shoot the presentation on that day. We did brainstorming and all of my group mates have good listening skills and value ideas from each members. We tried to incorporate the best and most creative suggestions. We had difficulties in coming out our final presentation but the totality of our experience was great. It  help me realized that not all ideas ,although positive, can be align into one, challenge the conventional way and be one step bolder. Our presentation embodies the traits of an authentic leader such as leading with vision, good communication skill, positive motivation and empowerment.

Assignments such as Defining moments made me recall past events. Most events were depressing and hard times for me. But by doing the assignments I had collected good understanding of the events and how they created an impact to who I am today . To grow from this challenging events is part of developmental process on becoming a good leader. I learned how the events defined my character. How my personality as individual affects others. Those defining times are good example of introduction to one owns path. It is like leading to my own purpose. Although painful, I had a little understanding why some events occurred. I had define myself from becoming a mother, a wife, entrepreneur and student. Also because of the recall I had examine my competency. I revisited my own goals in life and check my status. It is knowing where I am heading to with whatever God had given me. Like for my case, being entrepreneur is one way of addressing educational needs among the young ones.  My journey through motherhood is a never-ending learning experience, as a wife and my responsibility to become man for others.  The paper helped me summarized the full picture of my life.

Reflection 2 helped me conceptualized how external and internal factors affects my leadership. I recapped my actions, values, how others can influence me, personal choices and my decisions in life. I came out understanding my strengths and weaknesses (self-awareness). I became more sensitive of knowing myself first. Without knowing oneself I cannot distinguished what to use or needs to improve. Second is the importance of ingenuity. One should have knowledge and can generate new ideas from available resources. Third is Love, how I engaged others with positivity. And fourth, eliciting heroism rather than seeking own opportunity. He must put the needs of others first between owns personal agenda.

Third session- The group were asked to present anything. The most exciting part is to present anything which is very much general. Our group taught of presenting karaoke style game which required representative from each group. The song choice was even featured in the class blog because it directly addresses to lead and start now. Then the Movie synopsis by John Campbels- my chosen story is gifted hands by Ben Carlson. The story is about transformation leadership. The lead character showed the following characteristics of a leader: Setting goal and knowing where he wants to go; taking responsibility of his action; showing compassion on his chosen field of medicine; taking initiative beyond job requirement- (shown when he had to make decision between saving the life of a vehicular accident patient and his career as doctor); perseverance to attempt the first successful surgical operation on separating conjoined twins; taking responsibility of his action and acknowledge the power of delegating task ( he knew that for the operation to proceed he must collaborate with different specialty doctors). I may not have become a doctor but I can see how I can help heal the world with my simple vision. I am an advocate of education. I believe that education can help eradicate poverty. With positive reinforcement, I can be a part of a solution.  It is one small movement for a small scale entrepreneur like me, however I believe nothing starts big and ends up big. I am inspired to do more after realizing how I can help produce new visionaries from the young generation.

Fourth session- Enneagram and Genogram. As we were ask to answer the Enneagram test, I got a little knowledge on my personal preferences, how I deal with people and distinguished my attitude from extreme emotional situations. I have the type 2 personality which says I have generous and kind hearted personality. For my self-assessment, the enneagram help me become more oriented. As a leader, I can be more effective if I am self-aware with this simple things. This can help build strong foundation. By knowing my foundation it can improve my performance in leading others. I am ensure that my motivation help me lead by example, to inject enthusiasm in helping others grow and effectively lead them to become a leaders too. Then I volunteered to report on genogram. I presented 2 kinds of genogram, narrative and illustrative. Doing genogram is eye opening for most of the leaders. Different traits were all traced through identifying the genetic lineage of each family side. Sometimes the motivation arose from the not so good attitude seen among relatives. For some like me I took that motivation to evolved and correct the mistakes they have done. My relatives on paternal side, who became complacent with their financial stability, did not continue schooling. Most of them did not finished college, which led them to skirmish in providing their children today their basic needs. Seeing their fortune for not putting education first corrected my view on the importance of education. Their failure helped me convert to make more responsible action. The genogram is a very good exercise.
The team building- I've been looking forward to a more relaxing session and here come the fifth session. What was learned during the team building:

1.    Communication- we effectively communicated to each other and listens well. (Group 3 – Mighty Blue eagles overall champion )
2.    The cheering competition- Most of the group 3 members were young at heart. All of the group members contributed their ideas and incorporated hand gestures to meet the expectation of the clash masters. We were surprised that with little time given we came out to win the first challenge.
3.    Leadership requires thick skin- For a leader to be heard one must have the confidence to share his/her thoughts. One must effort to share among the group.
4.    Leaders are good followers too- when one gives good suggestion that will benefit the whole group that ideas will be put into rule and the leaders will all submit to become a follower. (hula-hoop game)
5.    Everyone developed camaraderie among other leaders especially for new students and old students from other batches.
6.    Tower building- we were given rules and time pressure to make the tallest straw tower provided that it will hold a 5 peso coin for ten seconds. We all agreed to create good foundation for the tower and include sand inside the straw to hold the pressure of wind. The strategy was very much effective and led us to win the game again.
7.    Whenever there is a new task we all tell each group mate to keep calm and stay positive.
8.    The group challenge of collaboration- It is always best to collaborate and gain more hands in building effort to gain the highest positive result.
9.    Trust- what kept us winning from each challenge is trust. We give our trust to each member that he/she will do her part at most.
10. Positive outlook on life's challenges- Team building is comparable to life's situation. There will be challenges along the way and we cannot stop them from coming. All we can do is to be prepared and take a bolder step each time we face a challenge.
My passion reflection 3-
The interconnection of my speech and reflection 3- what is your passion were best translated by the activity on session 6.As I prepare my draft on speech I also get the chance to draft my ideas for reflection 3.

Session 6- presentation and preparation of AVP and speech. I can say that with this leadership class we were push through my limit and went out of the comfort zone. Gaining skill on public speaking help me improve my stage fright and build a little thickness with regards to delivering speech. I know a good leader should have good communication skill and I believed my weakness on public speaking was address. With regards to AVP preparation, I had collected eye bags and sleepless nights to conceptualize all ideas in 5 minutes. I want to showcase my life by sequencing the events and still relate the whole idea to leadership. I believe I have successfully presented it with the objectives I want to incorporate.

Session 7- Recapitulating the whole 6 sessions. Best part of the session is looking back the activities that are u structured. It's like throwback Friday in AGSB Clark.
With the AVP of my classmates we got the chance to see the glimpse of their life's experiences. Very inspiring for me because I see and learn from their experiences.
My conclusion:
The course is very challenging for me. It inspires me to look deeper on myself and evaluate it thoroughly. I am happy I was introduce to unstructured way of learning Leadership. Now I can say I have started to revisit my vision and aligned my action plan. Thank you prof. Jorge Saguinsin.
