Good evening po Prof. Who would have thought that one of the plenary sessions of SICOG 2015 (Singapore International Congress of Obstetrics & Gynecology) was an extension of our leadership class. I actually still had the 8th session after all here in Singapore and I am so amazed of how prepared I was for this session because of all the learnings you imparted to us Prof. Of course what we learned from you was much more than what was discussed, especially so that what we learned from you was based on the spirit of Ignatian leadership which made all the difference in helping us become authentic leaders.
Let me share with you po some of the discussions given by Dr. Arulkumaran, who is the present President of the FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics). His title of the plenary lecture was "21st Century Consultant Should Be an Excellent Professional." He gave the 7 Cs:
1. Commitment to the profession I.e for patient care - attitude - available when needed & to give the best
2. Compassionate - caring, empathy, attitude
3. Courteous - self-respect, dignity
4. Competent - knowledge, skills, decision making
5. Communicator - listens/explains to patient, the team and relatives
6. Confidence - inspires confidence - builds trust & rapport - with patients and staff
7. Committed Leader, researcher, administrator, & member of the team.
Qualities of a Good Leader
(team feels that he/she is approachable, understands their problem and helps them)
1. Encourages, praises, inspires the team to make sure work is done well - to be the best that they can be.
2. Takes interest in the team and the students leading to patient's welfare
3. Makes every one accept difficult changes
4. Encourages colleagues to cross the line - leader alone crossing is not adequate
5. Presence is not obvious but is felt
6. Encourages them to be innovative - inspirational and innovative leader - we discovered it or we did it - creates the environment

Definition of Leadership given:
"To an extent, leadership is like beauty. It is hard to define, but you know it when you see it." By: Warren Gamaliel Bennis
John Kotter defines "Leadership by what others do: they cope with change, they set direction, they align people to participate in that new direction, and they motivate people."
Prof, this was NHS Leadership Framework po which they are presenting to the Ob-GYNs in Singapore to improve further the goals of the society.
Leadership subject at AGSB is an Ateneo advantage. It emphasizes leadership from within, authentic leadership. One of its pillars is love. This is odd in a cold steely corporate world. The others are heroism, ingenuity and self awareness. The goal of leadership is not only to develop oneself but to clone other leaders. Everybody has potential to be leader. What we do, even if we do not have followers influences/affects others. It is time to define Filipino leadership too

ReplyDeleteGood morning Doctora/Leader Suzette. Congratulations for this wonderful report vs fip and experience at Leadership class in MBA.. It is truly remarkable that your MBA exposure to leadership has set you apart from the other attendees as being more knowledgeable. That you have made your own wheel of leadership has levelled you up as leader, similar to those who sponsored the seminar. Maybe it is worthwhile asking those who asked the question, "Do we really need an MBA
ReplyDeleteYes Prof, having attended the plenary session on Leadership at SICOG after having finished our own Leadership class truly gave me an edge over the other attendees. It was worth all the effort in achieving what needed to be achieved in the Leadership class, There are more then many reasons I can name to answer the question, "Do we really need an MBA?"
