RCEE's FIP (Yes we can!)

Big Love

FINAL INTEGRATIVE PAPER

Half the world is sleeping,
Half the world's awake,
Half can hear their hearts beat,
Half just hear them break

I am but a traveler
Been most everywhere
Ask me what you want to know

What a journey it has been
And the end is not in sight
But those stars are out tonight
And they're bound to guide my way

When they're shining on my life
I can see a better day
I won't let the darkness in
What a journey it has been

I have been to sorrow
I have been to bliss
Where I'll be tomorrow
I can only guess

Through the darkest desert
Through the deepest snow
Forward, always forward I go

What a journey it has been
And the end is not in sight
But those stars are out tonight
And they're bound to guide my way

When they're shining on my life
I can see a better day
I won't let the darkness in
What a journey it has been

Forward, always forward
Onward, always up
Catching every drop of hope
In my empty cup

What a journey it has been
And the end is not in sight
But those stars are out tonight
And they're bound to guide my way

When they're shining on my life
I can see a better day
I won't let the darkness in
What a journey it has been
What a journey it has been

What a journey it has been Prof! It was indeed a fun-filled and full of self-realization leadership journey we had in class. Let me first thank you for teaching us beyond what the books may have taught. I learned more from the activities and reflections itself.
Since session one of our leadership course, the lecturer would start the class with songs related to leadership or activity that we will be doing. I realized how smart and wise songwriters are since they have to capture the essence of their point in song lyrics – they have wisdom indeed. So now I started my Integrative paper with a song entitled 'Journey' by Lea Salonga. It was indeed a leadership journey for almost two months for the class and me. I definitely learned a lot.
I will relate my learning with the said song.
Half the world is sleeping,
Half the world's awake,
Half can hear their hearts beat,
Half just hear them break
Half the world is sleeping by being indifferent. Some people are still not aware of themselves, still in identity crisis or still looking for their purpose in life. Half the world is awake for those who have self-awareness and have found purpose in life. Half can hear their hearts beat for they have found their passion or advocacy. Half just hear them break because they have loss hope.
The 1st reflection paper where we had to write about our life's defining moment or turning point proved us that when we fall, we need to get back up and prove the world that we are resilient. Not just to prove to the world but also to prove our self that we can be a better person and be more of what we are than before. The Lord has His own ways in making us turn back to Him by giving us problems that we should treat as blessings in disguise. As others may put it, God will not give us something that we cannot overcome. He will mold us through these defining moments.

I am but a traveler
Been most everywhere
Ask me what you want to know
I am but a traveler in this lifetime. I need to get as much wisdom as I can. Been most everywhere with my dreams and passion in life. Ask me what you want to know about me.
I learned a lot about myself (self-awareness) through the enneagram and genogram test. I've learned that some of my traits were from my genes. The activity were we had to pick one movie and relate it with Campbell's The Hero has a Thousand Face proves that we can make our own Heroic story even in our own dreams or fantasies. Sometimes I use this concept when I use the concept of play at work. Like when I tell my employees that we were just like playing basketball, I am their coach and they are the team players. Sometimes I would also relate our challenges at work in a movie. This type of ingenuity can lessen the stress at work and make work more fun or challenging in a positive way.
What a journey it has been
And the end is not in sight
But those stars are out tonight
And they're bound to guide my way
What a journey it has been. This leadership journey is still starting for me and yet the challenges that I had to go through were no joke and the end is not yet in sight. The worst or great is still yet to come. But those stars are out tonight to remind me that the Lord is by my side and they're/He bound/s to guide my way.
The 2nd reflection paper gave me the opportunity to see how my family, school, environment and values shaped me for who I am today. Those internal and external factors molded me for what and who I am today but God completed those. For without Him I may have not appreciated me. For without Him I may have been selfish. Selfish with my skills, my talents, my time and energy..

When they're shining on my life
I can see a better day
I won't let the darkness in
What a journey it has been
When they're/He is shining on my life, I can see a better day. I always see a glimmer of hope even if there are a lot of things that ails the world nowadays. I won't let the darkness in for this is my life's purpose after all. What a journey it has been…
I have been to sorrow
I have been to bliss
Where I'll be tomorrow
I can only guess
I have been to sorrow. My past was not all happy memories. I also have been to bliss but where I'll be tomorrow I can only guess. The AVP presentation of my life will just reflect only 30 years of my existence but there will be more to come that will be added up and will continue to mold me, to be a better version of me.
Through the darkest desert
Through the deepest snow
Forward, always forward I go
'Through the darkest desert and through the deepest snow' of our Country's or World's concerns like poverty, terrorism, pollution and the like. Forward, always forward I go… the speech I wrote and delivered about the power of love signifies that we should focus on the positive than the negative because through this we lift, help and motivate each other than blame each other. There should be no room for excuses.
Forward, always forward
Onward, always up
Catching every drop of hope
In my empty cup
Forward, always forward.. Onward, always up. The 3rd reflection paper is a form of 'catching every drop of hope in my empty cup.' My passion, my advocacy to address some of what ails the world – advocacy for our children's education and health. Our children are the future leaders and we must prepare them now. This goes not only for our children but to the people we meet every day – we learn from each other. My passion and advocacy is just part of the solution of our World's trouble but it will surely give me hope in my lifetime.

Analysis of Strength and Weaknesses

STRENGTHS    WEAKNESSES
1. OPTIMISTIC – I always see problems as blessings in disguise.    1. PERFECTIONIST – I don't settle for anything less. I strive for perfection in everything I do. I don't easily get contented at times.

2. PURPOSE-DRIVEN – everything I do needs to have a purpose. If it is not align with my goals in life, I will not bother try doing it.    2. PUSHER – I push people around me by asking them to step up always. I don't want them to be stagnant in terms of learning and success. I'd like to motivate them to be their better selves.

3. ATTRACTIVE – I believe that everything that happens in your life happens because you attracted it to you. I may not be attractive to people (because I don't mean attractive in the physical sense) but I give effort in attracting the things I want out of life by feeling positive at all times.    3. MULTI-TASKER – I easily get bored of just doing things one at a time. I like delegating my work if I know how to do it already. Also, I love doing 2 things at a time to save time. Two things that does not use the same senses.

Signature over complete name                Date

Before our first Leadership session I thought about leadership only as an action word where you lead a group of people by influencing or inspiring in doing something towards a common goal. I remember doing a blog reaction that I thought was already an assignment even before our first day in class. See this link for reference: http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/06/what-do-you-think-of-current-emphasis.html. I was so excited to learn more about leadership that ended up doing this even before the start of our first session. For the record, our leadership blog is on so I can check updates always. I learned how to upload youtube videos and slideshare because of this class.
After the first session, I was excited to share to my family that I was recognized as one of the Superwomen in class. I am so proud to have girl power..

Let me give my detailed summary of learning on these 10 points:

01 NATURE OF LEADERSHIP
•    Chris Lowey: FOUR Pillars of Heroic Leadership
o    First Theme of Heroic Leadership: Self-awareness
o     "To order one's life"
o    Second Theme of Heroic Leadership: Ingenuity
o     "The whole world will become our house"
o    Third Theme of Heroic Leadership: Heroism
o     "Eliciting great desires"
o    Fourth Theme of Heroic Leadership: Love
o     "With greater love than fear"
Four principles were projected when Jesuits became leaders as mentioned above. I learned that to become a leader you should first have self-awareness by understanding your strengths, weaknesses, values and worldview. I can also exemplify my ingenuity by confident innovation and adaptability in embracing a changing world. Heroism must also be one of my main ambition in leadership because without this sometimes I may find myself less energized with what I am passionate of doing. Love is also an important key in leadership since this action will make other people be engaged positively and with loving attitude. I learned that all these four principles (and not techniques) must be achieved to be an authentic leader because if one is missing, you cannot be one.
•    Challenge is the Opportunity for Greatness by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
o    Set the Example
o    Make Challenge Meaningful
o    Promote Psychological Hardiness
o    Create a Climate of Trust
o    Develop Relationship Skills
o    Leadership Matters
Besides that leaders should have relevant experience and outstanding IQ, leaders should also have emotional intelligence. I learned in this article that in promoting an employee, you should not only look at his/her expertise or experience at work but also take into great consideration his/her emotional intelligence because if that person gets promoted and his/her emotions are unstable, the group or people he/she may be handling will not grow professionally or even personally. It is very important to hone your EQ as well.
•    Seeking The Elusive Credibility Factor by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
o    "People run down. Energy runs out. Talent gets stale.Organizations get stuck. Challenges continue and threats mount, and the old ways of doing things do not work anymore."
To earn credibility, I learned that I have to listen and take a stand.
•    It's not just the Leader's Vision by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
o    You have to see what others see
I learned that leaders must be forward-looking but it doesn't mean that the vision comes from the top down. To be a great leader, I must have attentive listening so I can get the result of a greater appreciation of my people's aspirations. Whatever we want, we must want it to be an improvement. It should not always be the leader's vision but the people's vision. It should always be shared vision.
•    Leadership begins with an Inner Journey by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
o    A Process of Internal Self-Discovery
o    You Have to Stand for Something
o    Who Are You?
o    When to Say Yes and When to Say No
I learned that you can demonstrate leadership at any age and now that I am 30 years old, some may say that I have achieved a lot already but to me, I am still beginning my journey towards authentic leadership. I have already discovered a lot about myself and I believe that what I do counts for something. I know who I was, who I am and what I want to be. I learned that I have to be convinced of my passions and advocacies because without conviction, I cannot be courageous. I learned that I have to be clear with my goals and visions so it may be easier for me to stay on that path that I have chosen. With this convictions, I must learn when to say yes and when to say no in all situations.

02 WHAT LEADERSHIP ENTAILS
•    Educational Leadership (When Leadership Spells Danger) by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky
o    "Leading meaningful change in education takes courage, commitment, and political savvy"
o    Why Leadership is Dangerous
o    Why Leadership is Difficult
o    Tactics for Survival and Success
o    Don't Do It Alone
o    Keep the Opposition Close
o    Acknowledge Their Loss
o    Accept Casualties
o    Accept Responsibility for Your Piece of the Mess
o    Needed: Adaptive Leadership
I learned that leaders must be adaptive – adaptable to these unending changes in our world. They say that the only permanent thing in this world is change. It is true. And to be a leader I must be flexible whatever the circumstances are.
•    Discovering Your Authentic Leadership by Bill George, Peter Sims, Andrew N. McLean, and Diana Mayer
o    Learning from Your Life Story
o    Knowing Your Authentic Self
o    Practicing Your Values and Principles
o    Balancing Your Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivations
o    Building Your Support Team
o    Integrating Your Life by Staying Grounded
o    Empowering People to Lead
I learned that everyone could be an authentic leader even if you don't have a position or title. You just have to discover the abovementioned points in yourself so you may empower others through your leadership.
•    Good to Great by Jim Collins
o    The Myths: Burning Platform, Stock Options, Fear-Driven Change, Acquisitions, Technology-Driven Change, Revolution
o    How Change doesn't happen
o    How Change does happen
o    Disciplined Thought: Fox or Hedgehog?
o    Disciplined Action: The "stop doing" list
o    Now it begins
I learned that the reason why most overhyped change programs ultimately fail is because they lack accountability, they fail to achieve credibility, and they have no authenticity. To be great your people must be self-motivated. People want to be part of the winning team and they want to contribute to producing real results. I learned that to make change, you must choose the right people who can make the great change – first the people, then the direction. Great vision with mediocre people will only produce mediocre results. You should have people who run your company as if they are running their own. The real path to greatness is to eliminate all the extraneous distractions and require clarity, not instant illumination, simplicity and diligence.
•    The Work of Leadership by Ronald A. Heifetz and Donald L. Laurie
o    Solutions to adaptive challenges reside not in the executive suite but in the collective intelligence of employees at all levels.
o    A leader must sequence and pace the work. Too often, senior managers convey that everything is important. They overwhelm and disorient the very people who need to take responsibility for the work.
o    In the course of regulating people's distress, a leader faces several key responsibilities and may have to use his or her authority differently depending on the type of work situation.
o    Management needs to learn to support rather than control. Workers, for their part, need to learn to take responsibility.
o    Get on the Balcony
o    Identify the Adaptive Challenge
o    Regulate Distress
o    Maintain Disciplined Attention
o    Give the Work Back to People
o    Protect Voices of Leadership
o    Doing Adaptive Work at KPMG Netherlands
o    Leadership as Learning
I learned that adaptive work calls for leadership. Leaders are responsible to give direction by defining problems and provide solutions while being adaptive by identifying the adaptive challenge and frame key questions and issues. Leaders give protection by shielding the organization from external threats while adaptive leaders let the organization feel external pressures within a range it can stand. Leaders orient by clarifying roles and responsibilities while adaptively challenges current roles and resist pressure to define new roles quickly. Leaders manage conflicts by restoring orders but adaptive leaders expose conflicts or let it emerge. Adaptive leaders challenge unproductive norms and not maintain norms. I learned that the solution to adaptive challenge is with the people and not technical answers.
03 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
•    Leading From Within by Parker Palmer
o    Inward Realities
o    Leaders Have a Shadow Side
o    If you can't get out of it…
o    Out of The Shadow, Into the Light
o    Enabling Leadership
I learned that I should not be afraid in all the things I will and shall do because my leadership is from within. I trust my Lord that He will not mislead me. I don't do things because I am afraid of the people or situations around me. I am motivated from within because everything I do is for the glory of God.
•    Letting Your Life Speak by Parker Palmer
o    On the importance of listening deeply to find your true vocation
I learned that I should follow my heart's desires. I should not be afraid to make mistakes on my way in performing my passions and advocacies in life.

04 ENNEAGRAM:
http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/07/sharing-enneagram-test-result-of-leader.html

When I took the enneagram test, I was Type 3 Wing 2. As Type 3, I am The Achiever wherein I am adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious. I am in the Feeling Center where the emotion is shame. It says that my type tries to deny shame, and are potentially the most out of touch with underlying feelings of inadequacy. Threes learn to cope with shame by trying to become what they believe a valuable, successful person is like. Thus, Threes learn to perform well, to be acceptable, even outstanding and are often driven relentlessly in their pursuit of success as a way of staving off feelings of shame and fears of failure.
Style THREE, the "Effective Person," is someone who sees himself or herself as successful and efficient. This is the ever-youthful, highly energized, organized, goal-ori- ented individual. A THREE is very concerned with how he or she appears to others; image is important. Deception is the habit this person is likely to assume. Because THREEs will take on whatever role is necessary for success, they often lose touch with their true natures. For a THREE, fail- ure must be avoided at all costs, and this is accomplished through identification with his or her role or image, or with a group norm. (WEPSS)

I learned in class that we all had different personality traits which is perfect because I cannot imagine our world with the same. I believe that these differences will compliment and supplement one another specially when it comes to leadership. Also enneagram gave me an idea on how I cope with stress. It also showed me my direction of integration and direction of integration.
I am challenged to live by my enneagram test result. I am fired up to inspire others through my achievements.

05 GENOGRAM:
http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/07/leader-rcees-genogram-revised-and-edited.html

Through genogram I learned about my development of personhood by understanding my family system. By identifying the values, beliefs, history and the like, I came to know more about my leadership bedrock. Some of the criteria that were looked upon were basic data name, gender, date of birth, and date of death of each individual. It also included education, occupation, major life events, chronic illnesses, social behaviors, nature of family relationships, emotional relationships, and social relationships. Some included information on disorders also like alcoholism, depression, diseases, and the like.

06 THE PRESENT SELF
•    Faith in Focus Ignatius' Way by Chris Lowey
o    Following Ignatius
o    A New Camino
The article is about spiritual pilgrimage towards St. Ignatius.  I learned that I If St. Ignatius have done it (went out of his comfort zone physically and
figuratively) I can do it also. It is just now a matter of choice if I will follow his footsteps. Leadership nowadays has many faces and choices, I must choose the Igantian way. To be magis and selfless. To be a man for others. Spiritual
•    The Spiritual Excercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola by Father Elder Mullan, S.J. I.H.S.
o    1st Rule: Mortal sin to Mortal sin > Good spirit pricking their conscience through the process of reason vs. pleasure
o    2nd Rule: Cleansing sin from good to better > Good spirit give courage & strength vs. put obstacles
o    3rd Rule: Of spiritual consolation>  Inflamed with love of the Lord..gives peace.
o    4th Rule: Of Spiritual Desolation>contrary to consolation..disturbance.
o    5th Rule: Time of Desolation> Firm to good spirit not to bad.
o    6th Rule: Insisting more on prayer, meditation, examination
o    7th Rule: Grace enough for eternal salvation
o    8th Rule: Patience vs. Vexations
o    9th Rule: 3 Principal reasons why we find ourselves desolate> Negligence, try us, true knowledge
o    10th Rule: Think consolation vs. desolation > new strength
o    11th Rule: Humbling himself vs. can do much with His grace
o    12th Rule: Enemy acts like a woman> Weak against vigor vs. strong of will
o    13th Rule: Licentious lover wanting secret and not revealed > wants and desires kept in secret
o    14th Rule: Attacks on the weakest side
I remember the Lecturer asked Leader Mam Belle to discussed about Examen and discernment when making decisions. I for one do not truly and honestly know about this high level of morality but I can only grasp knowledge and wisdom that comes with my age. It is very helpful that the lecturer asked one from the class that is eldest among the group since she, I believe, has the authority to talk about this topic. We were even joking that she might want to be a nun. But the truth is, this article has depth when it comes to decision making. Really, I believe that the hardest decisions in life must be consulted and prayed for to the Lord. He may not directly speak to us but the gift of knowledge, gift of wisdom and discernment must be asked from him through the help of the Holy Spirit.

07 DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP

•    Leadership and Decision Making by Kevin Hoffberg and Clint Korver
o    A decision is only as good as the weakest link
o    How you frame decisions matters
o    You can't judge a decision by the outcome
o    Decisions are linked
o    You can't know everything beforehand
o    People have different risk profiles
o    Organizational decision making is a balancing act
o    "Two-choice dilemmas" make leaders
o    Organizational decision quality must be built a step at a time
o    It's not a decision until you commit
Decision making in leadership is very difficult because you need to "divide and conquer" to make quality decisions. You need to properly frame your decisions.
We need to take into consideration the six decision points: frame, people, process, alternatives, values, and information. As much as possible, you need to think many moves ahead because you cannot know everything beforehand.

08 LEADERSHIP AND PASSION
I learned how to write a speech and how to deliver it in front of a crowd. Thank you to Prof Jorge for recognizing my speech as the one that resonates to him the most. Here is a link to it for your reference: http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/08/rcees-call-to-arms-speech-power-of-love.html
My AVP also showcased my passions and advocacies in life. Here is a link to it for your reference: http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/08/rcees-power-of-love-avp.html
Same with my reflection #3 where I discussed my passions. Here is a link to it: http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/08/rcees-3rd-reflection-paper-my-passion.html

09 CALL TO LEADERSHIP

•    Joseph Campbell's Monomyth (Hero with a Thousand Faces)
o    Birth
o    Call to Adventure
o    Helpers/Amulet
o    Closing the Threshold
o    Tests
o    Helpers
o    Climax/Final Battle
o    Flight
o    Return
o    Elixer
o    Home
I have chose the movie entitled LIMITLESS and compared it to Campbell's monomyth theory and to my life. Here is a link: http://ateneoleadership.blogspot.com/2015/07/limitless-compared-to-joseph-campbells.html

10 LEADERSHIP SHOWCASE

This is the leadership wheel I prepared showcasing the four Pillars of Leadership by Chris Lowey. Four wheels that can be jump started by pushing our want and need to be Magis for we need to be as many as possible of the very best. This is the Ignatius' way. We have to follow his lead with our strength and guidance from the Lord.
I drew wheels that you can see inside a watch where if one rotates, it will push the next wheel to rotate and so on. Figuratively, those traits and principles stated on each wheel are need to move the wheel until it reach a momentum and when we are in a momentum we inspire and influence others by our lead. (Please see attached file)

IN CONCLUSION…
We only had teambuilding for less than 5 hours but we knew a lot about our self and each other just by playing the activities -- the Human Bingo just to give one example. What more to know one's self in your whole life existence?
When we are caught up in the chaos of work and life, there really isn't time for self-reflection and personal development. Over the last 6 leadership session, I have come to realize the power of introspection – taking the time to reflect honestly on your behaviors and feelings is an essential part of the journey to becoming a better, greater leader. And it starts with taking in new challenges, pushing yourself to do something or go somewhere that makes you uncomfortable. The speech activity was indeed a challenge I needed to overcome.
The blog and soft-copy-take-home readings greatly helped me to discipline myself by reading those not only for the purpose of our recitation but to really absorb what was written or presented in return, I may use it to be better with my craft as a leader.
To achieve a greater impact is to embody effective leadership skills. Leadership isn't about being in charge or being the boss, it is about having self-awareness, understanding the values, being positive, being a good listener, and a forward thinker. It's about going the extra step or the extra mile not for personal gain but for the good of the team. The past sessions have been challenging, I have discovered a lot about myself specially my weaknesses. The good thing is, the leaders aren't born or named overnight, it is a journey, a continual. I will continue to be Magis and I will build legions of leaders as the Lecturer always start his blog post.. 'Quamplurimi et quam aptisimi" (As many as possible of the very best)
Indeed, the course objective was met:
"Leadership Effectiveness (TSLEADER)
The course introduces the students to a depth of thinking about individuals and collective patterns of leadership practices. The course will guide students to reflectively process or understand leadership patterns and dynamics as applied in their personal and professional lives. Critical thinking and ethics-based reasoning and decision making are emphasized."
Thank you for this leadership journey experience with you guys! It was a fun ride…until we meet again.     And by the way Prof, my grade is 4. Whether you agree or not because I have learned a lot. That's my grade for myself. Power of Love Sir! ☺ And of course everyone will agree that your grade from us  is also 4, for a job well done! (applause)  < Agree It is not what was taught that counts, but what you taught yourself.  More girl power to you..  Salamat sa grade.>

Yes we can,
