Prof Jorge, Lulu, Sen Aquino and Dr. Lydia King
Today, I attended the graduation ceremonies at Irwin Theater in Ateneo Grade School compound. Some 300 MBA graduates in Health, MM, Standard, Entrepreneurship, Regis programs received their diplomas. One year hence, this Lecturer wish its your turn to march to the stage to receive your diplomas
The guest speaker was Senator Bam Aquino, who is an Atenean also, a Summa Cum Laude, and class valedictorian and is well known for his Hapinoy Social Entrepreneurship project.
I understand that there is a news article about him and his investigation of the very slow internet speed in the Philippines. This was the subject of the speech of our Leader Cezar Cortez last Friday
for which I made a post today Leader Cortez on slow internet speed in the Philippines
Prof Jorge and Senator Aquino both advocates of entrepreneurship
I was conversant on the subject matter having heard the speech of Leader Cezar and after posting the article. So I tried to pick his brains on the subject matter and he said:
1. It is a question of competition. We have only 3 telcos operating the internet. He said that his office is encouraging more: The SMC, the cable operators, the Clark group. Singapore, the city state the size of MM has about 6 telcos.
He has sponsored a bill endorsing the franchise of cable operators, led by fmr. Senator Jun Magsaysay to consolidate and run their own broad band networks via cable.
2. Govt regulations: NTC, the requirement for a congressional franchise work in favor of the giant telcos. It will take time to have new entrants to the market. His investigation next week will look into possible collusion between telcos and NTC.
A lot of frequencies are available he said.
He will look into the 9 landing points of internet connections (one of them is in Clark)
He promised there will be changes as he had passed 2 important landmark laws which others say, he could not pass.
As for the graduates, he wants us to have the courage to go beyond the ordinary, not just to be content with just being workers, but to be entrepreneurs.
Sen Bam Aquino and Dr. Lydia King

Thank you Prof.for sharing these pictures. Somehow they inspired me to look forward to our graduation...and of course to do something for nation-building. May the "Call To Arms" of Leader Cezar find its fulfillment.
ReplyDeleteLahat ng problema may solusyon at katugunan. Salamat sa inyo at your Class of Leaders are aware and want to make things happen
ReplyDeleteThank you Prof. for taking your time to talk to Senator Bam. Hopefully he can do something because I believed that Internet is a very powerful tool in Nation Building. It must be readily available to everyone at an efficient and cost-effective manner.
ReplyDeleteWithout your speech, there was nothing I could tell. Thank you Leader Cezar for the speech which as enlightening
DeleteMay be this is the reason the former Chair of Board of Trustees of Ateneo parted ways with the Jesuits; the former lacked the depth of nation building. Although they had more in profits, they could not make things better for the consumers by foregoing their stranglehold on their virtual backbone (probably to make more money). The simple solution suggested is to make internet a basic service, and allow other ISPs to connect to PACNET which has faster speed albeit faster and close to the speed of other Asian countries. According to the good Senator, frequencies are not very relevant to this (this applies only to mobile application) because internet is basically broadband (and the main nodes are landline based( Is this observation of the good Senator all right? I hope your speech creates an internet revolution soon, as your voice has been heard and you have a powerful ally - a leader like you Sen. Aquino
