1) Grandparents
a) Father's Side
Peter Chua- He came from mainland China, was a farmer there and came here in the Philippines to seek a better future. He had several businesses including warehousing, video shops and had success selling cars which he used to provide for his family.
Rosie Chua- She came from Mainland China also, was married to my grandfather at an early age. She was able to do side businesses of her own despite raising two kids.
Harry Ngo- He was also a Filipino Chinese born here, his parents where from Mainland China and were business people already when they came here. They had several successful businesses that enabled them to provide for their children comfortable lives and good education.
Julieta Ngo- She was from Ilocos, born and raised there. She met my grandfather when she came to live here in Manila after graduating from high school. They had three children, 2 girls and 1 boy, My mother was the eldest.
2) My Parents
a) Father, Steven Tan. Did not finish college but was the bread winner for his family most of his life. He was born a Filipino-Chinese but died as an American citizen on May 2010. He started his studies in a Chinese school called St. Stephen, but was more interested in earning money at an early age. He tried his hand in business here but found life here too slow. So when an opportunity came, he went to the States to seek a better for us and himself. He returned after 30+ years of working there and retired here as a pensioner.
(1) Stella Tan- only sister of my father. Graduate of BS. Management from Chiang Kai Shek College. Married to her longtime boyfriend after college and since been a house wife with 2 children.
b) Mother, Meli Tan- My mother, like his father did not finish college. After graduating highschool, she and my father got married. As like in Chinese tradition, they were arranged to be married by their parents. She was raised to be independent and strong and to rely on no one for her living. So she forged her own business and worked hard to achieve her success.
(1) Clayton Ngo – was a late bloomer, after graduating from college, and got a job in a bank. Married his longtime girlfriend who was a lawyer, soon after.
(2)Hazel Suman- Married to her husband from Austraila, They now work and live in Sydney. She is a doctor, graduated as an Optometrist. She now works there as a full time Optometrist and has a daughter named Rain.
3) My Wife, Kristina Tan, graduated from UP diliman, and now a manager in the company where she works.
In Conclusion
My family's lineage based on my Genogram are mostly non graduates but were successful at their own right, we basically come from a lineage of businessmen, which I hope to be one day soon. The early generations even up to my parents did not finish college, but maybe because of their generation did not warrant for it. But even though they were not fully educated up to college level, I think that because of their determination and drive to succeed, this propelled them to their individual success. The drastic change in business environment paved the way for us to realize that earning from traditional business is not enough. Especially in this generation where everyone is in the mist of great completion and diverse economic landscape. Before me, they were leaders in their own way, because they were able to cope with the changes and realized that their dependence with the bounty of the traditional business world would not be enough for this new world. They had a lot of ups and down, catching up in the rapid times of change. One thing they learned and instilled in us, the next generations is the importance of education. And this let me to believe that passion and drive alone is now not enough to propel you to success. What they say that in times that "sipag at tyaga is all you need" is now long gone. Now, as I will teach to my kids in their very young age, is that purpose is not enough, it's just a guide to what you want to achieve. You will need to have education to hone your expertise and have the proper attitude to pursue it. It is also important to have love and compassion to relate to everyone's needs and most important of all is mastery of one's self by developing leadership skills and the responsibility of continuous improvement and culture of excellence not only inside but towards every person that you work with.
