Students at leadership are graded on their reflection (their ability to discern from the daily experiences and stories. So too is the teacher judged on his reflection
So I biked 330 km for 3 days (October 30 31 and November 1) So what?
Early on I watched a movie feature "300 Miles for Stephanie" This was a story about a young GI from Vietnam who had an abnormal child . To top it all, his wife left him and the child. He was a loss on what he should do. Then he learned of the tradition in his place San Antonio Texas (where people are more devout and religious than Filipinos) where those who have intentions walk on their knees to up to the altar where they later pray, (This is the same in the Philippines) The parents of the GI, he was told did this daily while he was a MIA (Missing in Action) in Vietnam until he was found.
So he decided that he would not just walk kneeling 50 meters up to the altar but he would run 300 miles for his daughter so that she would get well
So this is biking with 4 others fellow bikers to San Felipe, Zambales is not just being foolish, it is about being hungry too while biking.
Is there leadership value in this biking adventure? A big resounding yes:
1. I offer the long ride to the Lord and so that whatever wishes and prayers we have will be answered;
2. This is self awareness at its best. To be able to bike this long, I must be aware of my courage, my ability to endure pain, and my general physical fitness. The route is long with a lot of challenges: long and steep climbs at Dinalupihan which take place at past 12:00 when sun is hot and you are running at half tank. Your feet ache, and your butts too and you do not know which one is more painful, You learn to ignore this and just go on to your objectives (think of Socrates and 3 Noble truths of Gautama Buddha)
3. As I bike, people I hope are inspired to ride too and be fit, and follow "mens sana in corpora sano" As people get fit, they get healthier. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation
4. We help the place we visit economically. Though how little we may spend for food and souvenirs in our food stops and destination, we add to thier revenues. I even have a term for this "bikeconomics"
5. We promote biking. As we do this, the biking industry grows and develop - the bike shops, the repair shops. We even encourage to have biking as part of mass transport in the city. (which cant be solved by jeeps, bus, and MRT/LRT)
6. We help save the earth by helping reduce carbon emissions.
So what do you think, does this biking adventure have leadership value?
